"Deep Throat" to be re-released in theaters this month

It was an interesting time in the history of this country. The mafia, Nixon and Watergate, Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog, Bobby Riggs versus Billie Jean King, and Linda Lovelace's five minutes of fame, all over the media.

I saw Deep Throat on my college campus several years after it came out. It was quite an event, everybody was curious and practically the whole campus turned out to see it, many folks overdressed and hard to identify.

On the other hand, the students running the show advertised "come naked, get in free" and about a dozen naked people showed up to cheers from the crowd, and sat up in front.

When the movie started, everybody was quiet and most people were pretty disgusted and offended by it. Caused quite a stir the next day with lots of pro- and anti-porn letters to the school paper.

It's a different country we live in now, different but still the same in a lot of ways.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Deep Throat," the infamous 1972 adult film that led to a government crackdown on pornography, is being re-released in theaters as a new generation of lawmakers wages a renewed assault on smut, trade paper Daily Variety reported in its Tuesday edition.

The release of the Linda Lovelace opus, which was banned at the time in 23 states, coincides with the premiere of the documentary "Inside Deep Throat," which hits theaters in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Boston on Friday.

The original film, which was made in six days for $25,000 and has grossed over $600 million, will not be ready until at least Feb. 18, the paper said. Las Vegas-based Arrow Prods., which owns the rights to the mob-funded "Deep Throat," started striking 10 prints on Monday, it added. Five of the prints will be edited to garner an "R" rating, which allows admission to children aged under 17 if accompanied by an adult.

Where's Rudy when you need him?

Anyway, this just seems like another way for whomever is releasing the picture to
make even more money from it, and/or re-releasing again for some kind of shock value.
The latter, I don't think is possible, with the stuff some people have been known to
watch these days.

I remember seeing this while in college also. Theater was packed, mostly couples. Thought is was OK, kind of a curiousity. Just saw Harry Reems interviewed on some TV entertainment show. He's still kicking but out of the business.

The starlet of the most infamous porno flicks of all time, actress Linda Lovelace was a key player in the film that made XXX chic in the 1970s, Deep Throat (1972). Though future revelations would paint a dark picture for her involvement in the production (Lovelace was once quoted as stating, "Each time someone watches that movie, they're seeing me being raped"), Deep Throat not only brought porn to the mainstream, but also established the actress a sordid reputation that she would never live down. Born Linda Boreman in the Bronx in 1949, Lovelace would later make frequent allegations of abuse to her then-husband Charles Traynor, whom she claimed forced her at gunpoint to commit numerous sex acts. Appearing in numerous hardcore 8 mm reels before her Deep Throat breakthrough (including a shocking act of bestiality, which Traynor attempted but failed to re-create for Playboy magnate Hugh Hefner), Lovelace disappeared from the public eye shortly after her initial stardom, later remarrying and becoming a staunch anti-porn advocate and an outspoken critic of silicone implants as a means of breast enhancement. Though she was no longer involved in the industry that made her famous and frequently derided the film that was her sole starring vehicle, Deep Throat continued its influence into the new decade when it was released uncut in the U.K. for the first time in September of 2000. In her later years the former starlet had worked numerous clerical jobs and gave birth to two children with second husband Larry Marchiano before the couple divorced in 1996. Penning Ordeal in 1980, the shocking autobiography found the actress coming to terms with her past and beginning an active crusade against the adult film industry that would last until her untimely death in 2002. Held on life support in the weeks following a devastating car crash, Lovelace sustained massive trauma and internal injuries resulting in her disconnection shortly thereafter. She was 53. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

What wasn't in this story, but had been in the news several years ago was that Linda Lovelace was in need of a liver transplant and blamed her liver failure on her drug use and life style.
This movie was considered a classic for several reasons, including bringing porn to mainstream theatres, where we had seen it during a re-release in the late 70's.
And of course, it's being released again to make money-there's no value in it otherwise-the sex is tame by today's standards and no one in the movie gets a dime off it. By pinning the word 'classic' on it, it's sure to reap a few more dollars from those too curious to just let it slide into oblivion.

As I recall, there isn't going to be much left if they edit it down to an "R". I snuck into a theatre when it came out. It was scandalous at the time, it is pretty tame by today's standards.

Did anyone else find the most interesting part of that article the fact that the movie grossed 600 million?

Heh, indeed... and it's a pretty fuckin bizarre movie, too.

A woman with a clit in the back of her throat.. what the fuck?

The songs in the movie are pretty hilarious, though.

Huh? There are songs in it? Maybe they should put the soundtrack on a CD . . . . . . . .
