I'd say that Momento was a good twist ending. You already feel disoriented going backwards, and then you find out that it could have all been wrong.

Rosemary's Baby
Friday the 13th
Dead Zone
Soylent Green
Planet of the Apes (original)
The Vanishing (the original Dutch version)
The Audition (Japanese film)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Blazing Saddles
The Empire Strikes Back
Cincinnati Kid
Carnival of Souls
Witness for the Prosecution

I'm surprised no one thought about Saw. The movie itself wasn't very logical, but the ending pwn3d my shit.

and i'd agree that memento, vanilla sky, empire strikes back, and unbreakable all had great twists.

I would say besides the Usual Suspects which basically everyone here has said...

Chinatown had a great twist ending. One of the few films that I actually didn't keep thinking about how much I hated Jack Nicholson the whole time. Also a Roman Polanski film which normally I wouldn't pay a dime to see anything he does. But this movie is great, its a classic, and it has a great twist ending.

Also, I think Se7en was great as far as twist endings go.

I saw the end of the sixth sense coming about halfway through the movie, so I disagree on that one. But a good film nonetheless.

Easy Rider - Yea, cliche
The Sting - pay attention kid
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
Bandits
Being John Malkovich - Maybe more weird than a twist
Matchstick Men
The Game - a fun ride
The Usual Suspects - Love that damn movie
American History X - that hurt
25th Hour - wishful thinking
Fargo - got to have a breakfast

Have to agree Sixth Sense was a little predictable. I remember wondering if he was in a coma or dreaming, at which point the rest seemed suspect.

M. Night is predictable. I had The Village laid out for myself and the friend next to me within the first half-hour.

I'm going with The Game for my best twist ending. You never knew for sure which of the characters' actions were part of the game or if the Michael Douglas character had somehow broken out of it until the very, very end. The movie was weak at some points, but if we're going by endings alone I give it a 10/10.

My favorite has to be The Usual Suspects, followed with Fallen.("let me tell you about the day I almost died")

Primal fear was good but the ending of the book was far more powerfully done.the movie used the same ending but drew it out longer.

Scream. Never would have thought that it would be TWO murderers! It is set up well, with al those red herrings. Fight Club has to be the biggest heap of crap of an attempted twist ending I have ever seen. It makes no sense whatsoever. I'll bet the writer didn't even know how he was going to end the film until he got there. If Edward Norton is Tyler Durden (or whatever his name was) andhe imagines all that stuff, how would he have been able to start up fight club in the first place, the guy is mentaly unstable for goodness sake! And that scene where he fights 'Tyler' in the parking lot and the two gus watch, doesn't that mean that those guys were watching him knock the shit out of himself?

The Sixth Sense ending is signposted like anything, right from the beginning Shyamalan is giving the audience clues. I twigged when the boy says 'I see dead people', that Bruce Willis would probably be dead since no-one in the entire film apart from the boy actually talks to him or even acknowledges his presence.

Usual Suspects is a good ending, but is also really obvious give that as he is the only survivor of the massacre, he HAS to be Kaizer Soze, so that one didn't surprise me either.

But Scream had me, and not many films have been able to do that.

Identity wasn't a bad twist, but I guessed that one as well.

salemsaberhagen 12-26-2004 07:19 AM

OH, and I just remembered. There was a horror movie years ago called 'April Fool'. It starred that guy who plaed Biff in the Back to the Future films. The big twist in this movie is that it turns out not to be a horror movie at all. Watch it, it's a good flick.

Xenomorph 12-27-2004 01:43 AM

The Fight Club movie absolutely falls apart at the end. You're right about that, Salem.

I don't know why the makers of the movie decided to do a complete 180 with the book's ending. The message of the book is clear only when Project Mayhem fails and the actual fate of the united Tyler is revealed through his perspective.

Hasn't anyone seen "The Audition?" It's a Japanese film that starts off as a comedy and then, in the last 30 minutes, turns absolutely terrifying! Highly recommended even if I just spoiled it a little.

How about the original Dutch film, "The Vanishing?" That film was every bit as disturbing as "Seven" but on a more conceptual level.

Yes he was. Just look at the flashback toward the end.

Ok I must be dumb as a stump cause I didnt see the twist in some movies I really enjoyed...so my list is

The Others
Sixth Sense
Identity
gotta go with longbough on Planet of the Apes

now...sleepaway camp....that one gets #1 in my book...I cant even remember how old I was when that one came out, I know I was in my teens somewhere, but that, to me, was the best twist ever.....I still get chills and clamp my legs shut thinking about the curling iron scene

jaypc2 12-28-2004 05:46 PM

A Clockwork Orange had a pretty twisted ending.......for me at least
