Spongebob Squarepants: A raging homosexual?

Camp cartoon star 'is not gay'

The creator of one of the most popular new cartoon characters for years, SpongeBob SquarePants, has rejected claims that his cheerful creation is gay.

SpongeBob has become an icon among homosexuals in the United States as well as a huge hit with children, according to the Wall Street Journal.

SpongeBob may be "kind of special", but he was not designed to be a gay character, his creator Stephen Hillenburg has told the Wall Street Journal.

The gay community likes the show because it has a tolerant attitude, Mr Hillenburg said.

"Everybody is different, and the show embraces that. The character SpongeBob is an oddball. He's kind of weird, but he's kind of special," he said.

"I always think of them as being somewhat asexual."

SpongeBob is the latest sensation on children's cable channel Nickelodeon, and was recently voted among the top 10 cartoon characters of all time by fans.

His sexuality has become the biggest talking point since US campaigners claimed handbag-carrying Teletubby Tinky Winky, an import from the UK, was a bad role-model.

SpongeBob's innocent optimism, "soft" personality and bright, camp world have endeared him to gay men, the Journal said.

Adult fans

Nickelodeon says the show is not aimed at a homosexual audience, but it is the channel's most popular show with adult viewers.

It may be designed for children between two and 11, but almost one in four viewers is aged between 18 and 49, the paper says.

It is screened at 2330, and at 2300 on MTV, as well as more child-friendly times.

In the UK, the channel said 40% of the show's one million viewers were over 16.

The Wall Street Journal says part of its reported $500m (Ģ322m) merchandise sales have come from gay men snapping up branded toys, lunch boxes and even thongs.

The US religious right said Tinky Winky was gay
I just think that this is so absolutely hilarious!
He's a CARTOON CHARACTER for christ sake!

BIG-UNS 08-26-2003 12:56 PM

Some people spend way too much time analyzing fictional characters. He's a talking cartoon sponge, of course he's special. :D

Locobot 08-26-2003 01:00 PM

Sponges are asexual, duh.

punx1325 08-26-2003 01:05 PM

I will watch the show when I'm really bored. He seems like a little child, not a homosexual. I don't even see any reference to homosexuality, unlike tinky winky.....

jimk 08-26-2003 01:09 PM

raging? no.

mincing? perhaps.

JumpinJesus 08-26-2003 01:25 PM

Come on, everybody knows Spongebob Squarepants is a secret plot by GLADD to infiltrate our society at its very core. We should dry him out as soon as possible and look under his pores to see just exactly what is going on in there. I bet we find the secret plans hidden in there.

Plummie 08-26-2003 01:36 PM

LMAO!

Spongbob rocks! I love the cheesey theme song to the show. :D

I never got the impression that he was gay but who cares anyway? Why do people get so worked up over stupid shit?

bermuDa 08-26-2003 02:12 PM

who lives in a pineapple under the sea?
Absorbent and yellow and porous is he!
If nautical nonsense be something you wish...
Then drop on the deck and flop like a fish!

spongebob is a great show, and although i know it's target demographic is kids i can't help but think there are parts of the show that are designed to appeal to older audiences, whilst going right over the kids' heads... I've had many a laugh watching that show that i knew I wouldn't have had if i were a decade or more younger.

char 08-26-2003 02:17 PM

Jeeeeeez, cartoon characters ARE asexual. They don't deal in those realms, nor should they. Who cares what gets Sponge Bob's square pants all hot and bothered, he's a funny kid's show.

sounds like something you'd get from www.whitehouse.org or www.landoverbaptist.org

WhoaitsZ 08-26-2003 03:12 PM

its a fucking cartoon for kids.

the people who actually care if these characters are gay or not are doing the very thing they are scared of . exposing kids to cerrtain sexuality.

like i told dad once. everyone was so fucking worried about a kid hearing the word 'fuck' that all the adults went shit crazy if it was mentioned. so...... i never knew the word 'fuck' existed until i saw over protective dipshits siezure over it. then i realized 'fuck' is bad. then i loved it.

good job, people

fucking dumbasses.

let the kids have their cartoons. these is beyond ignorant.

DEI37 08-26-2003 03:22 PM

SpongeBob had GOT to be the most idiotic cartoon out there. I can't stand it. Cartoons anymore are poor quality in general. I'd like to go back to the days of Wile E Coyote, RoadRunner, Bugs Bunny & Tweety...those were good quality entertainment. SpongeBob sucks.

Cynthetiq 08-26-2003 06:13 PM

ummm... it's not like it's Ren & Stimpy

absorbentishe 08-26-2003 06:40 PM

It's a totally funny, nonsensical type of cartoon. The cartoon is made to make fun of itself. I for one, think the show is totally funny, and love to watch it. I love to watch most cartoons though. I guess some day I'll actually grow up too. When SBSP comes on, my kids will find me wherever I'm at, and want me to watch it with them! Hence the nick and avatar.

People are reading too much into something that is not ment to make sense.

djflish 08-27-2003 11:30 AM

you have to admit, he is a bit camp

World's King 08-27-2003 12:09 PM

I have SpongeBob PJs.

Lebell 08-27-2003 12:40 PM

Big Gay Al loves Spongebob Squarepants

frankgrimes 08-27-2003 07:15 PM

I believe sponges reproduce by budding, if memory serves, so he would be asexual rather than homosexual. his starfish buddy does seem pretty sissy though. :)

Ganguro 08-27-2003 09:48 PM

patrick rules..
he's not gay, just more "special" than spongebob..
This is stupid.. arent we at war or somthing? let's worry about that iostead..

lions20 08-28-2003 06:49 AM

I've seen one episode and I think the show was stupid.

floonine 08-28-2003 07:03 AM

it is sick that people freak out about things like this... he is a kid, dammit. Being gay and having a gay time are two different things.

sadistikdreams 08-29-2003 12:03 PM

I read somewhere that Spongebob's age is really 27.
It was on the official site, I believe.

I think that show is weird. They're underwater, but they can do shit that you can do on land?
And why do they drive boats with wheels?

Latch 08-29-2003 03:40 PM

It's a kid's cartoon.. even if Spongebob was/is gay.. who cares? Kids find the show funny (as do a lot of adults.. like me).. let them (and us) have our entertainment without going all crazy over the sexual preference of the character. Dickheads.

I love the random stuff that just happens... a whole show devoted to a piece of paper.. and Patrick comes out with some great calls sometimes. In the "Blowing Bubbles" episode (no "Bubbles" jokes, please) where Spongebob blows a bubble of an elephant.. Patrick starts laughing and goes "It's a giraffe!".. I nearly wet myself first time I heard it.

Great show, regardless of what spongebob is or isn't.

DownwardSpiral 08-29-2003 09:04 PM

I agree w/ DEI37, Spongebob does indeed suck.

Happyland 08-29-2003 09:39 PM

i think Spongebob is great... its so over-the-top.
donīt you think its a bit strange that people always have to attribute gender and sexuality to everything.

It's true, it's what we do as people, we like people so much that everything we see becomes people. Case in point. Personification is one of the most annoying literary devices to me, but it's a natural result of our empathy.
