The Haunting in Connecticut - 0/10
Yea you heard that right, 0!! This movie had absolutely nothing good in it, NOTHING!! Holy crap what a complete waste of time! If I did not have a friend to give blank looks to throughout this movie I would have just turned it off. And damn youz all for being able to see District 9!! I almost creamed my pants from the first time I saw the teaser. I hate not having theatres near me, good thing I am back in the city this weekend! |
Taking Chance 8-10
The International 7-10 |
Let the Right One In - 8.5/10
This is such a good movie. Please, do yourself a favor and watch it before you see the remake that's coming out next year. |
The Hurt Locker - 10/10
I actually saw this movie by accident. A friend got a bootleg that was supposed to be Transformers, but after maybe two minutes we figured out that it wasn't. He was mad that it wasn't what it was supposed to be, but I saw an opportunity and copied the movie from the disc before he returned it to the original seller. Anyway, the woman and I watched it the following night, and I couldn't take my eyes from the screen. It locked me in immediately, and didn't let go until almost the last scene. |
Adventureland 8/10
I went into this movie expecting something similar to Superbad but this movie is a completely different genre. It's light on the comedy and high on the nostalgia. A few of Jesse Eisenberg's scenes remind me of a young, less pathetic Woody Allen. There were a few things that I wish had been handled better. A few of the characters reactions to things seemed out of character and of course the romantic comedy relationship formula is in effect. The movie gets it'd job done though. |
Went to see District 9 today and I was impressed. Extremely well done. I thought the transformation of the main character was very effective - someone mentioned his redemption, but I don't the point was for him to be redeemed at all. He was naive and gullible - he didn't do his job with ill intent. What he went through was an awakening.
The effects, of course, were remarkable. Most important, was the way they handled 'the message.' They managed to impart the message without being overbearing in the least. Subtlety. That is the most charming and remarkable thing about this movie which could have so easily been heavy-handed. Which is funny considering how many people are, literally, blown to bits in it, lol. I liked it very much. I give it a, uh...a 9. |
G.I. Joe. -10/10. this movie was a platinum coated, laser polish turd. Every action scene in this movie was stolen from some where else that did them better. But it was shit ton of kick-splod. This movie sucked such massive ass that I am going to have to buy it.

Appaloosa ***/5
A good, if not great, western although Viggo Mortensen is fucking cool as hell. He and Ed Harris really do work well together and I'd love to see more from them after this and A History of Violence. |
The Great Buck Howard 7/10
Not that bad. Not great, but not bad. Colin Hanks is going to have as good a career as his dad without Bosom Buddys and Bachelor Party. |
I've been on a bit of a movie binge lately:
About a week ago I saw Public Enemies; I'd give it about a 7/10. I was pretty excited going in based on the historical setting and characters it was based on, even though I was expecting it to be fairly contrived. Overall it wasn't bad, but a little too long and just a little too lacking either in the dialogue or the action. Last night I watched Run Lola Run. Great movie, I'd give it a 9/10. It reminded me of the Butterfly Effect mixed with Killing Zoe... a fun and interesting watch for sure. Just out of curiosity has anybody here seen Inglorious Basterds yet? I'm supposed to be seeing that either tonight or tomorrow night. I love Quinton movies I've heard some mixed reviews about this one. |
Inglourious basterds:
Not bad, but not great That about sums it up, an above average movie, with the clear Tarantino style, but it goes up and down for immersion. Christoph Waltz is great as the SS Jew-Hunter Landa, no question about that. The first scene was great and did an excellent job of painting his professional character.µ It's his best work since Kill Bill, definitly, but, to steal a quote from the guardian: Quote:

District 9 10/10
Great fucking movie. Everybody else has already handled the reasons why. |
I love you man- funny movie. It was OK, I just wouldn't pay for it. 6/10

9/10 Spoiler: I was reading more about this movie and it was shot in an actual slum where aliens had lived (in this case Zimbabweans). Also, the beginning scenes were all ad libbed and Wikus was literally pretending he was evicting people going door to door. They kept what worked and deleted what didn't. I think that really added to the realism feeling during the early scenes. |
Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo - 10/10 - Ah-friggin-dorable! Saw it with my sis and my friend (that's a girl) and it was amazing. It was shorter than other Miyazaki films, but still excellent.

Oneechanbara--Also not a very good film, but it did have a hot chick in a bikini butchering waves of zombies with a katana, which of course meant I enjoyed it immensely. |
Spiderwick Chronicles 7/10
It was actually pretty good. The cgi was clean and the story wasnt bad. Its not a must see but if you got two hours to blow give it a viewing. |
(500) Days of Summer
9/10 I really liked it, and I think I was meant to watch it in this part of my life. Made some sense out of some things that have been rolling around in my noggin. Zooey Deschanel was adorable and I was surprised to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt all growed up! |
The Time Traveller's Wife: 5/10
Didn't do anything for me. While not bad, it wasn't good. Ok at best. It felt messy and inarticulate, like cramming too much in and failing to treat them sufficiently. Inglourious Basterds: 9/10 Kick ass dialogue. Loving the dark humor. Brad Pitt was awesome. Chritoph Waltz found a whole new legion of fans. Could be shorter though. The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard: 8/10 Funny movie. So many funny scenes in the movie. Has the same feel as Hang Over to me, but I liked this one more than Hang Over. And Will Ferrell owned every second he's in. |
District 9 - 10/10
'nuff said. |
Inglourious Basterds - ??/10
I liked it. I enjoyed it. Something is not sitting right with me though. The problem with Tarantino movies is the fact that you know you're watching a movie. Right when you've gotten yourself immersed, some really awkward song comes on, or a camera shot makes you tilt your head. Or the dialogue runs on to a point where you can see Tarantino's fingerprints all over it. This was a good movie none the less. |
Sunshine Cleaning: 8.5/10
This movie with Amy Adams and Emily Blunt is about two sisters who start a bio-hazard and trauma clean up business. It is subtly funny. It is short and it leaves a couple of loose ends which is why it loses points with me. |
State of Play 7/10
It's a political conspiracy theory with relevant subject matter. It was somewhat predictable in that you knew SOMETHING was going to happen even though you didn't specifically know what it was going to be. I think the whole genre is burdened with that problem though. The movie does pretty much follow the conspiracy formula but I actually liked Russel Crowe in this movie and Ben Affleck was a passable young congressman. I didn't even recognize Robin Wright Penn as Affleck's Wife in the movie it's been so long since I've seen her. |
The Three Amigos - 152846/10
One of my favorite movies that I hadn't seen in forever and almost forgot about. If you need any type of description, or have never seen it, I'm sorry for you. |
Frozen River - 7.5/10
Good story, good performances. I'm not quite sure what was missing but it could have been excellent. Watchmen - 6/10 Cinematography and lighting that was breathtaking at times, but the storyline was working too way hard to be something of epic proportions and it simply wasn't. |
Lost in La Mancha - 7/10
Documentary about Terry Gilliam's thwarted attempt at making a film version of Don Quixote starring Jean Rochefort and Johnny Depp. I was kind of disappointed in this film only for the reason that it was hyped up as this brilliant and 'heartbreakingly hilarious' documentary and I found it to be neither. It was a passable entertainment and I am sure it would have been a great film (the film the docu is about) but for the fact that it was doomed from the start, lol. Worth watching if you are into moviemaking, but probably boring if you are not. |
District 9 - 9/10. This one surprised me because I thought it was going to be another politically correct tiresome hollywood morality play on people living in poverty, and maybe it was but it wasn't obnoxious about it. Simply put, this movie kicked major fookin ass. Excellent mainstream sci-fi flick with quite the creative premise (!), exciting plot twists, as well as great special effects and action scenes.
One thing stuck in my craw: Spoiler: Given the devastating superiority of the alien weapons and battle machines, why were the aliens the ones living in squalor and not the humans they obviously could have defeated in battle? |
I just watched One Week.
It's the most beautiful movie I have ever seen. The story was brilliantly written and acted out, and the cinematography is superb. I cried more than I'd like to admit. The hurt is perfect. Definitely contending for my #1 film. 10/10 |

Julie & Julia - I say it's good, but my friends say no.
I really liked this, but I've talked to two of my friends who saw it who were quite unimpressed. One said that the film had no umph. She cooks and runs a restaurant/catering service, so I thought she would like it. The other friend is a film buff whose opinion I respect. So, now I'm not so sure. Maybe I'm wrong, and I saw something that was not there. |
I haven't been in a theater since I saw Jurassic Park (10/10, BTW), so my review will be a few pages later than most. After watching it sit in my TiVo queue for over a month, I finally got around to watching Burn After Reading. I was greatly disappointed. Everything - from the writing to the acting to the directing - was mailed in. I expected more from the Coen brothers. The best thing I can say about it was that is was short (104 minutes).

Spoiler: Did he say what they were recovering from? Yes, a sequel would make sense given the ending. It did promise... |
One thing that isn't directly addressed in the movie (I don't think) that I read about the film before seeing it, was that the folks in the ship were not leaders - rather laborers - and I suppose they were waiting on a leader...which, I suppose, might have been the lead alien protagonist.
Also, I don't get the impression from the film, that the weapons they had were plentiful. |

The Last House on the Left - 6/10
Decent revenge movie. The rape scene was longer than I was comfortable with, but I'm sure that was the point. The last scene completely ruined the movie for me though. Stupid, stupid, stupid. |

The Watchmen (for the second time, this time at home on blu ray) 7.5/10
Not sure what I rated this before, but I still enjoyed this movie. And watching it at home on blue ray, WOW!! Talk about amazing visuals! I have never before seen a movie so crisp! One of my big problems with the movie before was the soundtrack was deafening in relation to the rest of what was going on, it also seemed out of place. I did not find this to be a problem at home, not sure if they tweaked the sound levels or if it was just my set up. But it seemed like a big improvement. |
Punisher - War Zone. 8/10 (as a serious movie, 2/10)
B movie goodness!! Horrible parkour, amazing deaths! Some of the worst accents you have ever heard! Skull punches and face smashes! Wow what a great movie to watch with friends and beer! Avoid at all costs if you do not like B movies, or are looking for something serious and meaningful. |
After reading the great reviews you TFPers wrote for The Hurt Locker, we decided to see it tonight. Unfortunately The Hurt Locker was no longer showing at our theater, after one week! I so envy you city dwellers who have numerous movie theaters at your fingertips to see whatever and whenever. However, tonight was the first showing for Moon so the night was not a loss.
Moon 9/10 Great, great film. Just as good as District 9, but in a different way. Would have had a 10, but I was left uncomfortable. |
Crank 2 9 out of fuckin 10.
This movie is so fucking hilarious. It's so ridiculously over the top. The language is fucking brilliant. They may have a record number of "Fuck you"s. If you enjoyed the first movie, definitely watch this one. |
