There was just assumptions and possible originations but no response to the movie we are all thinking of.

ive watch most of Goldeneye for that purpose but she never said it. It is possible it was in a scene I missed. I even checked the script and its not in there.

I've seen Gotcha! a million times but I couldn't tell you for certainty if its in there or not.

I know its not Rocky IV because I watched it recently specifically to see if the quote was in the movie. The scene most people think it is when his wife talks at the press conference (jts not) and when the coach is talking to the TV crew about Drago (its not). He refers to Drago as a piece of iron or something. Plus, I've checked the script and its not in there.

It is possible this quote was implanted into us by Aliens as a trick!

My wife suggested one and I don't think that it has been put forward before. "I Love You to Death" with Kevin Kline and Tracy Ullman. The mother-in-law character is vaguely eastern european and speaks with a heavy accent. She and the wife are conspiring to kill Kevin Kline's character. One of the ways that they try is by poisoning with food. She could have said the line in an attempt to get him to eat something poisoned.

Has anyone seen that one recently? It was out in 1990, so it fits roughly in the time frame that everyone seems to have in mind. I don't think that we have it on tape anymore or my wife would watch it and find out for sure.

I cant say that I've ever really watched that movie. I believe I know of it. I sorta remember someone in that movie with an ace bandage around her head...but I dont think I really watched the whole thing from start to end. Sometimes I think that maybe its some movie like Patriot Games. There was some fat russian chick that some spy came and banged her then he left and her friend came in and she started talking about him and said that he was strong like bull. But then I think thats not it at all. I think its a comedy and somebody gives somebody something and says "drink this..make you strong, like bull". Maybe like Love Potion #9 but I know its not that. SOB...this sucks. How is it possible we ALL know this quote....all the way down to the way the person says it....with that damn russian accent but nobody can place it. I wanna scream.

I'm seeing a Russian grandmother with a scarf on her head ( a la Fiddler on the Roof) holding out a cup of some kind of steaming liquid. The scarf was red. "Here, drringk this. Make you strrongk... like bool." She had a pretty big nose and dark hair. And it's old. My dad used to say it. Maybe 1970s. But something I actually saw. Movie, not TV. Arrrrrrrgh!

The phrase has outgrown and forgotten it's origin. It's probably already been answered with the Rocky and Bulwinkle/Make room for Daddy posts. The thing that's throwing everyone off is that they didn't hear it from either of those. It's been referenced so many times on and off television your mind is tricked into believing you've actually seen where it came from. I don't know if this is true or not, but it helps me sleep at night.

I just read this thread today, and "From Russia, with Love" kept coming to mind. I did a check and there is a scene that may have the quote, but I can't confirm it. The early Bond films were very popular so that might explain why the phrase is familiar to the older generation.

I may have found the answer. I was watching Quantum Leap on the SciFi Channel this morning. More specifically it was the series finale 'Mirror Image'. In it the character Stawpah I believe says "Made him strong like bull" in a heavy russian accent.

Unfortunately I was watching in the bedroom and the DVR is in the living room so I could go back and check for sure if that is what he said. I've been trying all day to find a copy of that episode but no luck . All I can find are the complete season so I leave it to someone else to confirm.

If you search google for the quote, thats my messages that post. That google response was because I took a chance with that google answer thing. I put $20 down on an answer and that guy came up with the danny thomas show. I wasn't asking for the origin, although, that was pretty cool and very well could be the origin of it. Well this thread is quite something. I also remember this quote, so it can't be too old (which rules out Make Room for Daddy altogether, as I'm 100% sure I've not seen any of that). I was born in 1983, and I remember it from between 1984 and 1989, I'm almost 100% sure. It was around the time I used to watch Bedknobs and Broomsticks. A masculine Russian or Eastern European woman hands someone, presumably the protagonist, a glass of something green and says, something like Drink "It make you strong....like bull!"

There are two references, one's definite, the other is debatable.

1) Definite:
It wasn't a woman, it was Robert Duvall..
Movie: Colors (1988)
He noticed Pac-Man (Sean Penn) watching the latinas hard and said " You need to get you one, they'll make you strong, like bull.."
Do not confuse this with the OTHER bull reference he used, about to old bull and the young bull on the hill.. :)

2) Debatable: Depending on the director's cut or not, Denzel Washington used the reference that made the DC's DVD and not the release of "Training Day". The reference was on his ability to please a woman and sire only sons..

But I think the "Blazing Saddles" reference is the closest..

it is debatable as to whether or not what we remember is a russian accent or a native american accent. Perhaps it was referenced in Colors like it was in There's Something About Mary and French Kiss but I feel really strong about it being a Russian Accent. I really feel exactly what willravel said. PS Just had a thought that may help. I think I may have heard the quote from a Venture Bros episode, not that that would be the origin since its a new show but they make fun of a lot of old cartoons. So maybe the origin was an old cartoon.

I teach the novel, OF MICE AND MEN, and the phrase "strong as a bull" is used. Not the same thing, but this book was written in the 1930s, so perhaps the phrase has been around at least that long.

What about Charles Bronson movies? I was thinking maybe "The Magnificent Seven"? "Dirty Dozen"? "The Great Escape?"

Both articles/questions come around to a semi-plausible answer that television actor Hans Conried originally coined the term in film, though this is still debatable as some recall the phrase being uttered even before the mid-1950s.

Mongo does say Mongo Strong, Like Bull, after he pulls off the chains the next morning. I think it was before he says Mongo only pawn, in game of life.

There was a TV show that originally ran from 1965-1967 Called " F Troop". It was rerun into the ground during syndication from the 70's all the way through the 90's. In one episode there was a character called "Col. Dimitri Agarnoff" played by Larry Storch the character was Russian and he said to the main character, Sergeant O'Rourke, "Drink this it make you strong like bull" later in the same episode a American Indian character played by the same actor Larry Storch says it again, word for word. Of course that is part of the joke. It was a very funny episode and would have stuck in peoples minds. This would explain why it spans generations and is remembered as being said by a Russian and by an American Indian.

My recollection is that "Stong like bull" was said by Yul Brynner in 1962 film, Taurus Bulba. Yul is a cossack fighing the Poles. Now I have to find it on Netflix to see if I am correct.

It came from early TV. A show called Make Room For Daddy, they also said it on Bullwinkle.
The Russian accent I think was from Moscow on the Hudson.
