DOOM

So whos going to see this movie based from the game. So far its getting bad reviews. The Rock is in it which got me more interested in seeing it. So Im planning on going to see it anyways cause there's really nothing else to see.

radioguy 10-20-2005 04:26 PM

it doesn't really look good to me, especially with the rock in it. if i see it, it will be because someone else has it or rented it. i was never a doom fan. it just looks like a bunch of killing aliens and monsters and stuff.

Siege 10-20-2005 09:22 PM

I can't imagine it being particularly good. What good movie has the Rock been in? And Doom doesn't seem like the type of movie to get nominated for anything other than Teen choice awards.

However, I may consider watching it if a friend pays/downloads it.

Suave 10-20-2005 11:28 PM

Siege: The Rundown (actually, it's the only one I've seen with him in it, but it's awesome). Really, depends on one's definition of "good". I do recommend it though.

Lasereth 10-21-2005 05:59 AM

Ugh. I was hoping for a surprise, but of course, it's getting TERRIBLE reviews. Oh well.

I agree The Rundown was a great movie, I can't remember anything else he was in other than Be Cool, he was quite funny in that as well. As for Doom, not too sure I'll go and see, maybe download it, if I can't find anything else.

djflish 10-21-2005 11:14 AM

I really like him in Walking Tall and he was by far the best thing in Be Cool.
But doesn't he get killed off at the beginning? I thought Carl Urban is the main guy?

Spektr 10-21-2005 12:47 PM

The Rock was on the Daily Show last night, and gave Doom a decent spiel. He promised a true-to-form flick full of unapologetic violence, so it could be worth a watch.

Pragma 10-21-2005 02:53 PM

I'm planning on seeing it this weekend (either tonight or tomorrow). I'll post a review when I get back.

hulk 10-21-2005 09:10 PM

When you consider most movie critics aren't gamers, it explains why the scores suck so much. IGN gave it 3/5, but they're dodgy, so take it with a grain of salt :) I might see it. Maybe.

QuasiMojo 10-21-2005 10:34 PM

I remember Doom from the beginning...The eye-bleedingly, back- achingly beginning.
Doom. Doom2. HERETIC.......................Yeeeeesssssssss............
XBOX....
I'd watch the Doom movie even if it starred Tiny Tim.

Carno 10-22-2005 05:42 AM

Well, damn. It is exactly as I suspected, but I would have liked to have been surprised.

The Rock can suck my balls. I don't think I'll pay to see this movie.

Pragma 10-22-2005 07:47 AM

Here's my reply - I'll do my best to cover up spoilers wherever possible.

It's a scifi action/horror film. If you liked Aliens, you'll like this. It's the same genre of movie, and to me, that's not a bad thing. The theater I saw it at was packed, despite all of the bad reviews - and most of the people didn't look like gamers, and I don't think most of them had ever played Doom. That said, basing a movie on Doom is kind of a nebulous concept, as Doom doesn't have a huge story to draw off.

There are several things that are drawn from Doom 3 - and they pull it off great in my opinion. The layout looks remarkably similar to Doom 3 in a lot of places (Spoiler: especially when The Rock picks up the BFG), and I thought that was a really neat touch. The monsters aren't from hell - but they do look exactly like the monsters in Doom 3 (Spoiler: Imps, Pinkie demon, and zombies - though the imps don't throw flame). The background story isn't terribly strong, but what background story there is was pretty cool, in my opinion (Spoiler: rogue science experiments tampering with the human genome, turns some people into superhuman, some people into monsters, and then lots of killing results).

Now that I've done the background stuff -- what makes the movie really cool? The action, the violence, the gore, and the humor. The movie has pretty much nonstop violence for most of the entire time, and it's done well - it's filmed such that you don't mind watching the Marines running around shooting at people, you never go "blah blah, move on and do something else" (unlike Aliens, when they kept chasing after Newt - I took a bathroom break). There's plenty of violence - people getting shot in the head, the throat, all over the place - in addition to random acts of monster violence (Spoiler: like getting your head ripped off by an imp). There's plenty of gore - similar to Doom 3 in a lot of ways - and yet it's not overdone in a comical way. It's more along the lines of "yea, he got shot, and so there's blood everywhere."

The humor is mostly gallows humor, though there's also a lot of Doom humor moments (Spoiler: ... Big fucking gun!). The part of the movie that I loved the most was the first person shooter mode sequence. I won't explain what happened to cause it (as that would require a lot of typing, all of it in spoiler tags), but when the sequence kicks off, the entire crowd was like "SWEET!" - and the sequence was nonstop with Doom 3 references (Spoiler: ever hated the zombies hanging from the ceiling in the beginning of Doom 3? Reaper runs into those). Spoiler: The pinky demon (and where it comes from - I always wondered what the hell was up with those mechanical wheels), was awesome - chainsaw for the win. The concluding fight was a very badass fight, as would suit any action movie, but especially Doom.

Overall? It's not a perfect Doom movie (no flying skulls, no pumpkin heads, no Hell) - but there was never going to be a perfect Doom movie that non-Doom people would go see, because they just really wouldn't get it. That being said, I think it does do a great job at being based on Doom, and it is a very good movie. I'd give it an 8/10 and recommend anyone who (a) likes Doom or (b) likes scifi action movies should go see it.

Krycheck 10-22-2005 10:55 AM

I saw it last nite. As far as movies made from a game are concerned, this one is one of the better ones. But that's not really saying much. I liked it better than Resident Evil. If you're not a fan of Doom or the Rock I wouldn't recomend it. There was some pretty cool stuff at the end like when they went into first person view with the camera for about 5-10 min. That to me was the most enjoyable part of the movie. The begining was boring and somewhat pointless. As a Doom fan I would have liked to see more monsters and I think it would have been more enjoyable if they had added more of them.

jason87 10-22-2005 03:55 PM

Ok i thought the movie was good, i liked the first person shooter part near the end. If you like action flicks i would recommend the movie. I was a little disappointed with the ending but overall i thought it was a good movie.

I had some doubts when I heard about that FPS sequence- been scarred too badly by House of the Dead. One question: Do they play the "rip and tear your guts" card?

m0rpheus 10-22-2005 09:30 PM

maybe its just me but if I wanted a First Person Shooter, I'd just play a FPS...

Ah forgot about that movie. He was one of the few saving graces of Be Cool. :D

The whole movie is not an FPS - it's just a plot-induced 5 minute sequence near the end, with heavy music pumping, the audience really excited, and tons of people getting shot. The sequence in the trailer doesn't do it justice at all - you really need to see it in the theaters to believe it. Go see the matinee showing of it, it's worth at least five dollars, if not more, to see it on the big screen.

Fire 10-28-2005 11:45 PM

I hated this movie- I felt the fps thing was a neat idea, but it would have been better spaced through the movie- (the crowd reaction was to groan and laugh in the theatre I saw it at) also, despite his showing in the rundown, the rock cannot act, and his part would have benifited from someone who could.... I like action movies, and the movie Aliens, and horror movies, and played the Game, but am dissapointed- why the hell someone cannot do it right, I do not understand.......
