I can't believe I just did this...

Opened up a bottle of Mondavi Chardonnay...

Broke the screw in the cork... *doh*

It wasn't even real cork! Who the hell decided to not use real cork? Bastards!!

I managed to use the other end and pull the "cork" out anyway :D

:loser: :p

Next time you cook shrimp(even though I know you don't like seafood :o ) try sauteing the shrimp with some red wine, garlic salt and pepper. oh yeah, add some butter as well. This recipe works great for sauteing mushrooms as well.

Edit:
:ripped: The smilies don't work like on your board. :o

d'oh!

i cracked lots of corks in my (drunk) day.
i usually ended up just puching it in to the bottle and using a chop stick or something to hold the cork in whilst i pour.

and about the not-cork cork...
i heard that they're trying to save the cork trees. and thus, the synthetic cork.

what the hell? i hadn't heard a thing about cork trees since Ferdinand the Bull sat under one. And that was a looooong time ago.

it also helps to prevent the wine from "corking"

a bacteria in the cork that makes the wine taste not so good

Exactly. In addition, there are some ultra-high end wines that are being bottled with screw-caps. It is foolish to spend so much time developing a fine wine, then jamming a piece of bark in the top and trusting that it will seal the bottle properly.

Cork isn't bark.

Corks are made from the bark of oak trees.

lemme google...

here you go..

From http://www.thewinedoctor.com/advisor...rvecorks.shtml

Corks and Cork Alternatives

The vast majority of corks are made from the bark of the oak tree Quercus suber, and come from the oak forests of Portugal. There are alternatives to the standard cork, however, the motives behind these alternatives being in some cases financial, and in some cases a quest for quality and consistency.

Yeah I once broke a corkscrew in a real cork. I think I screwed it in at an angle, and a little side-to-side wiggle on the corkscrew, and the metal just broke! I couldn't believe it. I felt like such a wino when I had to pry the cork out and filter the cork bits out of the wine with a coffee filter. :P
