The Bard's Tale
 

Does anyone own this game or has anyone played it?

It got pretty good reviews all around, with the one central complaint being the combat system. IGN said that the combat system isn't bad, it's just average. Everything else is supposed to be excellent though.

I'm mainly considering the game for the humor anyways, so that doesn't really bother me.

Anyone have any thoughts/opinions/warnings?

I played the old, OLD Bard's tale, from I believe the late 80s.

Old School at its finest, let me tell you. So old I can't remember a damn thing about the game.

I plan on getting this game once my Xbox arrives. Looks to be great fun. The original was an excellent game, and I hope this one holds up as well. Check this page out for more info and reviews, etc.

I've heard from some reviewers that the game is worth playing because it's so damned funny. I love funny videogames so it might be worth checking out!

i'm lucky i have a girlfriend who loves games and works at eb .. i'm sure this will wind up in the apartment sooner or later. i haven't been dying to play it, but i do think it'll be a refreshing game to play.

It's funny in a very predictable, geeks-love-boobies kind of way. The Bard cracks on every woman he meets, the narrator calls the Bard a wimp seventy thousand different ways, drunks sing Brave-Sir-Robinesque songs about the Bard, and everyone has a good chuckle. I thought the humor was trite, for the most part. Leisure Suit Larry is a game that carries spontaneous humor off very well. Bard's Tale seems like a collection of tired jokes and peepee humor.

i thought lsl was horrible .. i gave it points for using words i'd never heard in a videogame before, but that was it. i never found it worth anything more than a little chuckle. not that the bard's tale is, i don't know yet, but if lsl is funnier, then this must really not be funny.

IGN may have said the combat system is "average," but it just sucks. It's a top down view, and your character has such ridiculously long attack animations that you'd better hit with your first swing, or you're screwed. But oops, the hit detection isn't quite up to par, so every so often you'll swing THROUGH the monster you're trying to hit and take a stab in return.

Ugh. I just couldn't bring myself to play this for very long. Two hours, tops. The stupid jokes got old, and the game itself isn't strong enough to stand on its own.
