Your best/favorite Strategy war game

Figured I might as well see everyones opinion on this while I was at it. I have played many RTS games. The only one I ever got competitive in was Warcraft 3 Frozen Throne. I played Starcraft, Age of Empires, and Age of Mythology online as well. My favorite was Warcraft 3 because it was so well balanced while at the same time, was easy enough to controll and you didn't have to have the micromanagment down to the lvl of Donald Trump to get things done right. Age of Mythologies was probably better, but I just didn't have the time to dedicate to it. I was too busy with Warcraft. What are your opinions?

Coppertop 01-08-2005 12:53 AM

Oh man, let's see...

I guess I'd have to choose Medieval: Total War. It was programmed by god and handed down to Creative Assembly for distribution to me. That how much the game fit my personality and gaming style.

Yes, that was a truly fine game out of so many other, excellent choices.

Painted 01-08-2005 01:09 AM

Id say any of the Total War series, as well as Blitzkrieg:Total Challenge (the name speaks for itself)

Kodega 01-08-2005 03:27 AM

Rise of Nations is probably the best one I have played in my opinion. I like Total War: Shogun, but it's usually not a good sign when your getting your ass handed to you during the tutorial, again and again.

Artsemis 01-08-2005 05:00 AM

hands down starcraft

portwineboy 01-08-2005 08:10 AM

Harpoon. It used to run so slowly on my old PC (my first PC) that I would read a book while the game ran at 4x or whatever was the fastest time compression.

jt6879 01-08-2005 08:47 AM

Rome was a great game! I love that one.

Ace_O_Spades 01-08-2005 10:10 AM

Dune

Gotta love old skool

whocarz 01-08-2005 11:12 AM

All of the Total War games are my favorites.

lyxo 01-08-2005 12:25 PM

Starcraft. I still play it to this day.

tellumFS 01-08-2005 12:28 PM

Age of Empires II and Rise of Nations are my votes!

Carno 01-08-2005 12:40 PM

I can't have just one... I have to say Starcraft, AoE, AoK and WC2.

I still play AoK, and I'd play Starcraft if I still had the game.

archer2371 01-08-2005 12:48 PM

Rome: Total War, no doubt about it.

Rudel73 01-08-2005 06:37 PM

Myth and MythII:Soulblighter are my favorite of all time. Made by the same company that brought you Halo :)

Myth III Sucked tho, wasnt made by bungie

junglistic 01-08-2005 08:39 PM

i gotta go with starcraft with wc2 a close second,

i never got into wc3, and the earlier aoe's were ok

NeverBorn 01-08-2005 08:45 PM

Total War.

omega2K4 01-08-2005 09:22 PM

Age of Empires II, Rise of Nations, and Rome: Total War

Chupes 01-08-2005 09:56 PM

Well, my PC could prolly only run Age of Empires 2, but I still think it's soooooooo awesome

Willravel 01-08-2005 09:59 PM

Starcraft (I'm Justwill on West coast).

Jakes 01-08-2005 10:04 PM

mine sweep, 8 seconds

FngKestrel 01-09-2005 12:38 AM

I'm gonna have to go with Command and Conquer: Generals w/ Zero Hour expansion. There's something truly satisfying about carpet bombing an incoming column of laser tanks with a stealth bomber. :D

Xell101 01-09-2005 06:45 AM

Rome: Total War

Kadath 01-09-2005 08:19 AM

Total Annihilation, hands down.

Runners up:
Starcraft, SW:Galactic Battlegrounds, Warcraft 2, Age of Mythology, and the first two Myth games get a special mention for being so different and awesome.

skinnymofo 01-09-2005 11:44 AM

starcraft and warcraft 2, but i must admit that ive never played any later rts startegys although every time i go by the wc3 set im tempted to buy it

VitaminH 01-09-2005 08:55 PM

Starcraft.

Still...can't....stop...playing...

Man/Amazing 01-09-2005 11:34 PM

The best is probably StarCraft but my favorite has to be Age of Empires III

Stare At The Sun 01-10-2005 12:30 AM

Starcraft is the best. Without a doubt.

Long live blizzard.

Bauer_Power 01-12-2005 08:25 PM

Anybody else looking foreward to Age of empires 3? Gonna kick ass!!!!

Homey_V 01-13-2005 12:01 PM

Command & Conquer

THE defining RTS game. All others bow before it in supplication and worship it in its glory!

Tusko 01-13-2005 06:08 PM

the best and most realistic rts military strategy game yet. phenomenal.

Have you tried playing Steel Panthers? Give it a try. It is available for free here:

http://www.steelpanthersonline.com/

You won't find a more detailed World War 2 strategy game, in my opinion. Even moreso than Close Combat. SP looks dated, and it is, but give it a whirl and see how you like her. I've been playing this game off and on for over 10 years now. It never gets old and I keep going back to her. The amount of community support is incredible. Like nothing else I've ever seen.

Did I mention it's free? :D

Tusko 01-28-2005 11:36 AM

yep, i was a big follower of SP for a while ;)

but i just prefer the real time aspect of cc.

I tried to get into it. The level of detail in terms of content is phenomenal, like Coppertop says, but I needed the pretty graphics to stimulate the other side of my brain.

Chupes 01-28-2005 12:06 PM

Full Spectrum Warrior is my favorite. It's so realistic... it's almost like playing Black Hawk Down or something lol

I can understand that. I keep wishing for a good WW2 RTS to come out that is basically a real time Steel Panthers. I buy just about every game that tries to fulfill this niche (Sudden Strike, Panzer Claws, Codename Panzers to name a few) but they always disappoint me. Codename Panzers has come closest, but it's just not the same. I just don't think it's possible to make a game like SP real time and mantain the same flavor. Maybe one day...

albazeroex 01-28-2005 12:48 PM

C&C
starcraft
homeworlds 2 ~ currently playing :D

Stiltzkin 01-30-2005 12:29 PM

I'm actually gonna go to a friend's house later today to play StarCraft and kick some ass.

Rabid Bunny 01-30-2005 06:41 PM

Medieval and Rome: Total War

Bodyhammer86 01-30-2005 09:04 PM

Adding Starcraft and Rome:Total War to my list. Both are great strategy games.

C_man 01-30-2005 09:20 PM

Rome: total war and Civ II were my all time favorites. Total Annilation is up there as well.

Gabbyness 02-01-2005 04:23 PM

Myth and Myth 2: Soulblighter, were freaking awesome. They were way ahead of their time in terms of 3d strategy. First game where terrain was everything and you could blow up zombies with molotov cocktails and satchel charges. Freaking kick ass.

molloby 02-01-2005 04:39 PM

Civ 3
Total Anihilation
Dawn of War

In order, man I love Civ 3, I still play it every now and then.

Suave 02-01-2005 04:56 PM

Civilization 2! That, or StarCraft. Or Command & Conquer. ALL THREE COMBINED!

Tusko 02-01-2005 06:27 PM

i also REALLY liked alpha centauri

madcow 02-01-2005 06:41 PM

I've never like anything better than starcraft, I played WC3 a bit when it came out, but it just wasn't the same. The upkeep system seemed like a cop out, like they needed to keep the armies small so they threw that in there. Doing so made it like you needed to not make units and hoard up a bunch of money, upgrade and then produce the units...

Anyway I like starcraft because of the speed of the play, the great dynamic between the 3 races and the endless strategies you could come up with.

ranger 02-02-2005 09:19 AM

Warcraft 3 is a godsend though Warcraft 2 will always have a special place in my heart.

Age of Empires 2 is a classic.

I'd like to try the new LOR game and star wars battlefront though.

DITTO!!! C&C is the best...any of them...Generals + Zero Hour is killer!!

00111000 02-02-2005 12:31 PM

I agree with Gortexfrog. Advance wars is probably my favorite. I still play the first one while on the throne. Warcraft 2 comes in a close second.

asaris 02-02-2005 12:36 PM

Europa Universalis II. I bought it four years ago, and still play it on a regular basis. Paradox Entertainment rocks!

spindles 02-02-2005 02:13 PM

Age of Empires 2: The Conquerers - I lost a lot of time to this game, and am not concerned over the loss

mreman4u 02-08-2005 05:45 AM

I agree with MPower, Axis and Allies is the best strategy game available. I'm talking about the old one like the board game, not the new one. I only wish the AI was a bit more creative and less predictable.

Gabbyness 02-08-2005 03:25 PM

Civ2/Civ3.

What do you guys think about the new Act of War? Kinda diggin it.

kurtisj 02-08-2005 04:40 PM

i like the classic war craft 2...i also like age of empires 2 a lot

nohitters 02-10-2005 07:36 AM

I think the game is called Ages of Mythology or something like that. It's got the same style as the warcraft games but it based more on mythology. It's not as good as warcraft but its a pretty cool game.

Jadedfox 02-16-2005 02:09 AM

In the RTS genre StarCraft is the best ever, hands down.

For pure strategy (turnbased) everything pales in comparison to Panzer General. One of the best games ever.

Starcraft Commited ownage on somanny levels.. It hurts me everytime i go back on battlenet to find the place flooded with annoying 12yeaolds and retarded scrip kiddies. Anyone want a game sometime :D?

pacaveli 03-02-2005 03:22 PM

starcraft and warcraft 2, i hated three i hated the speical character thing. It's too much work for me and theres a lot of lag in their b.net games

MiSo 03-02-2005 08:42 PM

i love Command and Conquer.
i used to play it on playstation1.
its much much better on PC =)
so damn slow on playstation now that i've played both.

Kalnaur 03-06-2005 01:44 AM

Age of Empires 2 (expansion, the whole nine yards), Warcraft III (ditto), though Civ 2 will always hold a special place in my heart, and Civ: Call to Power was a fun take on the civ games.

Notable mentions would include Warlords II (I think that was the one) and Lords of Magic. The only thing that really held Lords of Magic back when it came out was it's immense bugginess. And how long it took for them to bring out any fixes for those bugs.

Etherlords wins my goose-egg prize though. Ugh.

dfings 04-23-2005 06:09 PM

warcraft 3 the frozen throne hands down best strategy game i have ever played, i still play it today online, if anyone else play and is on azeroth send me message with ur name

hulk 04-23-2005 07:16 PM

Myth 2! Nothing beats modding it for the screaming iron assault dwarves.

As for bigger things, Combat Mission kicked arse on so many levels.

Dragonlich 04-23-2005 11:03 PM

This could be a looooong list, but I'll stick with the best:
- Civ 2. Tried 3, but it just wasn't the same.
- Medieval total war. Rome was nice too, but I prefer the medieval theme.
- Steel Panthers - minefields rule.
- Panzer General - just great, end of story.
- Hearts of Iron 2 - currently playing it, and love it. a lot.
- Masters of Orion. The original was great. The latest in the series is a bit too steep, though.
