TFP Fashion Sense
 

I'm always finding myself in need of some advice on what/what not to wear, so I decided to ask TFP for once. Its almost time for classes to start up again, and I'd like to look nice with a few pairs of new khakis. Yet I'm stumped by all the choices, flat front or pleated seems to be the biggest decision. Is there any rule about how to choose which style, or should I just see what looks better?

I try not to wear clothes that would be uncomfortable to sleep in. Not that I'm narcoleptic or anything; I just choose clothes based on comfort first, and looks second.

Of course, I'm not what one would consider "well dressed" either. Good luck with your khaki-conundrum.

Same here. I'm probably the worst person to ask for advice when it comes to being well dressed. I'm usually in a T-shirt and jeans because that's what I'm most comfortable in. I usually prefer comfort to style, and that's probably why I'm single at the moment.

i have no fashion sense either, but i actually do wear khakis pretty often during the winter... i kinda flip-flop between them and jeans for periods of months. but anyways, i've always been a bit partial to pleated khakis, i think they're a bit nicer looking. but go to the store, try them both on, and whichever style makes you think "goddamn, i look so good i want to fuck me right now" is the style to get.

Khakis? what are these Khakis you speak of?

I'm more of a t-shirt and jeans kind of guy. I do know that if you've got a paunch then the pleated pants are only going to accentuate that. Good luck with the pants problem, hope it works out for you. :)

im all about zip-off cargo pants. in the fall and winter u have pants, and spring and summer you have shorts. pants are easy, casual shirts are hard.

and anything were u have to dress up real nice is easy cause i only have one suit.

Look to see what the maniquin is wearing then proceed to buy the whole outfit. hehe, I would say different shades of khakis, try on pleated or flat front cause some flats look weird depending on your body. Also get a few black and dark grey pants, bunch of golf shirts and a mix of linen and cotton button down tops. Winter comes around then get a bunch of sweaters and solid coloured jerseys. Mix and match from there.

I think you should try each kind on and see what you think looks and feels better. The worst fashion faux paus is when you try to dress like everyone else. Set your own standards of style and just have fun with it.

Kakhis? The devil's own uniform! I wear black jeans with black boots and a black t-shirt 99.9% of the time. Sometimes I'll wear a black shirt instead of the black t-shirt.

I've always like pleated, never even considered flat front. Sorry I can't give a reason why, so I'm probably not helping much. I had to wear a uniform for the few years I spent in private school and it just pleats just look "better" I guess.

i'm a t-shirt and jeans/cargo pants kind of guy. but i do have a drawer full of 'smart casual' clothes that i feel i should have.. just in case..

I have a pair of each.. =) flat fronts look a bit more casual, and i'm more partial to my pair of flat fronts.

More pleats generally equate to more formal. When buying a suit, more pleats usually go with more conservative designs. Today, runway models (unconservative) have even dropped down to no pleats at all. I'd say just mix and match. If you go with pleats, wear some nicer shoes and a matching belt so you look well-put together ;) (IMO)

To answer your question specifically, go with flat front. Flat front trousers are infinitely more flattering than anything pleated. The hem should break over the top of your shoe. The waist should be comfortable, not so tight that you can't breathe when you sit down, but not so loose as to show the world what color underwear you have on, either.

i prefer flatfronts. pleated only on more formal occasions.

Just try different things on and get what you think looks good and isn't uncomfortable.

Never wear pleated pants please! They are terrible and do nothing but make you look fat. Only men over 50 should wear pleated pants.

I think the responses are clear, so here's my conclusion.
Pleated pants are more formal, however flat front pants look better on everyone except old people. Thanks, everyone
