The Best Feeling In The World

I was just thinking about this as I spoke with another supervisor today at work.

What is the greatest feeling in the world?

Really; Think, Post, Discuss.

For me, the greatest feeling I have ever had has been when I go to sleep next to my g/f at night, and when I wake up next to her in the morning. Nothing makes me feel more complete than having her body next to mine, still asleep and warm, as I massager her into waking up.
Makes my heart warm just thinking of it.

Ok, your turn.

anleja 10-22-2003 11:09 PM

When my 11 month old daughter smiles and holds out her arms for me to pick her up... that's probably it. Such a simple gesture, but it makes me happy no matter what mood I'm in.

Good thread, I'll post more deeply after I get some sleep. I like the positive threads the most.

almostaugust 10-23-2003 12:02 AM

I love the feeling of wakeing up with my gf. The only feeling i think that compares (and this is gonna sound shallow as anything) is scoring a vital goal in a soccer game.

Doos 10-23-2003 12:54 AM

To bring this thead down a bit, surely relieving yourself after holding it in for a while has to be right up there.

jawshoouh 10-23-2003 02:31 AM

skydiving from 18,000 feet :)

the best (non love related) feeling iŽve ever had was when i reached the top of Kilimanjaro a few years back.

i know its not a massively difficult climb, but the last night climb up a few kilometres of scree rocks up the side of the crater, in the middle of the night, at about -20c (with winds as well) was harrowing to say the least (and thats not including the altitude headache).

but coming to the top, just as the sun was beginning to rise up over the African savannah below, with the light making the snow an amazing golden/pink colour, along with the massive adrenaline burst you get when you finish climbing ..

i mean, this all combined to make a total orgasmic rush that lasted a few days.

(my only regret of the whole experience was that my shitty camera froze and didnŽt work at the summit)

well, that was the best feeling in the world... iŽll never, ever forget it.

Sleepyjack 10-23-2003 06:47 AM

aside from any kind of feeling of love or exterme lust or something, probably listening to any kind of music that gets me going and when i feel like breaking stuff or more so pumped up and i workout, play sports, dance around or let some aggresion go....

but i am a little weird like that...so

but more so than that, is whenever you feel like you've made some kind of connection with someone, other than physically, although that doens't happen too often for me.... :(

Also, please don't say sporting acheivements are shallow!
they're great, any kind of physiscal activity against some kind of adversity and to overcome it is great. Ha, no matter how shallo that sounds.

ok i am gonna stop here.

Is this before or after you kick his ass out of the bed?

Just teasing.

What a difficult question. The easy answer is the moment after sex when Quadrette and I are laying on each other and napping, relaxed and satisifed. But there are other awesome moments. When I'm on stage and completely forget about the audience and am locked in with the other actor, and conversely, when I get a big laugh at one of my lines. :) One more would be the feeling I get around the second week of December when the Christmas spirit sneaks up on me and knocks me on my ass. :)

Just to set the record straight he's the one who kicked me out of bed. But there are no hard feelings. :)

I would have to agree with other members and say waking up next to my girlfriend is such a great feeling it puts a smile on my face every morning. Then I hope she wakes up and really puts a smile on my face *wink wink*!

numist 10-23-2003 10:18 AM

jimk, I hope someday, when I have kids, I can have the satisfaction of one of them saying that to me, that would make my life complete.

quadro had a good one too, the lying down after sex is always really really good, but I usually have to go to the loo...

Great responses guys! Keep em comin!

Being the first person on the chairlift after they've closed the ski area for 3 days because they got SO MUCH SNOW.

Playing a gig to a packed house that dances like crazy, hangs on every note, and knows every word.

Discovering that she's as into you as you are into her, and you're WAY into her.

Nothing beats the adrenalin rush

sipsake 10-23-2003 12:12 PM

Waking up next to my new bride, then walking out onto the porch of the bed & breakfast and watching the shrimp boats go out as the sun rises over the Sampit river as it flows into Winyah bay.

Stare At The Sun 10-23-2003 01:17 PM

I'll be vulgar:
Not pulling out...

If not that, then adrenalin, plain and simple.

Heh, and the fight scene in Rocky 4 is always a good feeling

twotimesadingo 10-23-2003 06:14 PM

strangely enough, my best friend and i were just talking about this the other day...

no feeling compares to the walk into a woman's bedroom. i feel more alive during that 15 second walk than i do when fighting.

that experience is the best when it's the first time, and especially when it's a girl you don't know well.

it's a feast for the senses: ocular and olfactory stimuli are almost enough to literally knock me from my feet.

i've talked with other friends about this, but no one seems to get it; i feel it's as erotic, if not more, than the actual deed.

figgles 10-23-2003 10:25 PM

Nothing in the world can possibly better the feelign you get when first you see your new born child. Twice i had the pleasure and then after a 4 year break another came along. This time despite the expectations of the joyous moment to come i shared with my wife as she was awake for this childs arrival, the greatest moment in anyone's lives. When my son opened his eyes and showed me his beautiful blue eyes (2 x brown and dark so far!)
i thought nothing beats this.

iktoweya 10-24-2003 05:56 AM

Hrm. Id have to say hanging out with my nephew. He really looks up to me as an older bother. Being away at college doesn't give me much time to hang out with him anymore. Every chance i get to hang out with him i do. i can tell it makes his day in turn making my day.

There is also a reverse to that and that is when one of my cousins calls me up to hang out with him. He is like the bigger brother i didnt have. No matter what we do together, at the end of the day there is always a smile on my face.

damhna 10-24-2003 06:32 AM

Good Feelings:

When my son's little hands grip me so hard when he's scared and buries his head in my chest knowing Daddy can protect him no matter what .

When his mom , just before sleeping , mumbles "I feel so safe in your arms"

The moment when you first see defeat in an oppoents eyes.

Standing ovations from people YOU thought were amazing.

When you finally look around and realize what an amazing thing being an american is , and know you belong to that and contibuted to it , thats gotta be up there too.

junglistic 10-24-2003 09:46 AM

i cant pinpoint THEEE best feeling.

but, waking up beside my sweetheart on a sunday morning has to be #1..

also an awesome feeling, after working X amount of days straight, getting up @ 5am, and the next day (day off), waking up subconsiously (sp?)without an alarm clock at 5am, and just thinking in my head, yessssss. i get to keep sleeping.. oh what a feeling.

numist 10-24-2003 12:28 PM

damhna, those do sound fantastic...

especially the standing ovation thing - I know a lot of fantastic people and they all have unrealistically high opinions of me.

Now I cant wait to have a child (in a few years, not now), it sounds like a great feeling sometimes, despite the lost sleep.

floonine 10-24-2003 12:35 PM

Listening to your favorite live album, and fading out of reality long enough to see the screaming fans begging for your attention.

Or a puppy.

costello 10-25-2003 06:57 AM

i'll agree with the standing ovation. 3 years ago i did a play in high school that went to state. well we won and after we preformed got a standing ovation. 7000 people :)

the best though has to be having a family. its the only dream i have. i dont care what i do for a living, any of that. just comming home to a family that i love with all my heart and knowing they feel the same way is something i cant wait for. i love needing someone that needs me, and vice versa

matt_mll 10-25-2003 11:02 PM

good question and good thread. I deffinately think that the best feeling in the world would be taking home a healthy newborn child for the first time. Since I haven't gotten that far yet, I would have to say waking up next to my g/f after having been away or alone for a long time.

Journeyman 10-26-2003 12:11 AM

When I was 14, me and a friend were walking home from a movie rental store in the middle of night over a bridge that has a 20 foot drop to the right and moving traffic to the left. In the movie store, I had taken it upon myself to inform this guy that whoever buzzed his head sorta butchered it. He informed me that it was a birthmark. And that was that.
At the bridge, a small white car pulls over in front of us and he storms out and heads straight for me, yells at me some while shoving me back, then grabs at me and yells at me about how I don't know who he is and he will fucking kill me. Given the strength difference and the environment, he could have. I apologized as much as a could untill he finally stormed off and left.
This person was 2 grades ahead of me, so I ended up seeing him here and there in highschool for the grand total of 6 months that I ended up going to highschool in my freshman year. I left and started community college.
Because of that, I had to do an independent study thing at night for drivers ed, at the school district. I sit myself in the back corner seat and crack the drivers ed book, and this person walks in eating a burrito, walks right towards me and says "That's my seat, dude." I jump to another seat, bury my head in my book, and stopped going to independent study soon after.
My friend (not the one who was with me that night), I told him about the whole situation and how I was sort of upset and wanted some kind of reckoning, and he quite simply stated that I'd get wasted (he was in this persons grade).
Four years after being threatened with death, I was moving a cord of firewood from the driveway to the backyard for my parents. I see this person pull up to the house directly across the street from mine. Apparently, his girlfriend babysat my neighbors kids, and he had gone to see her there (after she had supposedly broken up with him the night before...).
I have never been in a fight before this, and I have no training in any sort of fighting skills. I walk two more blocks of wood to my backyard, feeling adrenaline turn my legs into lead. But I need this.
So I walk across the street, and grab his attention. "Hey, remember me?" - "No." - "You threatened to kill me about 4 years back after I asked about your hair in movie magic." - "Oh yeah, I remember you..." - "Yeah, you mind apologizing for that?" - "Apologizing? Bitch, you had no right to say the shit you said and.." - "Dude, I was 14 at the time, and I know you were 16..." - "Yeah, so now I'm 20, and you're 18? So you wanna settle it like men?"
That's when I hit him, hard. His girlfriend who had come out of the house halfway into the conversation screamed something and distracted me, which is when he came back at me. What I remember are him throwing wide haymakers that were easy as could be to keep from getting to my face, and sticking him with a few hits to his head, wondering why he's not getting knocked out. Some grappling/wrestling went on, the most that resulted was me being over him with his back to me, and putting a hook into the side of his head and wondering if it was right to hit somebody in the back of the head.
His girlfriend got in the middle of it while we were seperated for a moment and squaring off, looking to sling some more. She screamed about the 3 kids she had in the house, and we broke it off. He got in his truck and said for me to meet him at the nearby elementary school (which was really silly, as it was about 3 and kids would be getting out of there, too). He sped off, with a black eye and a cut by his ear. I checked myself in the rear view mirror of my car, I was clean as before.
I sort of stomped around and said to his girlfriend about how she hooked up with a probable wife beater, and when i found out that my neighbor's wife was on the phone with someone other than the police (she had come out at some point, I forget when), I got in my car and headed straight for the school. When I got there, I parked, and he was nowhere around.
As it turned out, he has some priors in this area of the penal system, and drove straight to the police station. I found this out when I went home and talked with my mom, who had talked with this person's girlfriend.
In the 20 or 30 minutes it took for the local police (I've known one of them for a long time) to show up (they had him at the station and me at my house, no need to rush things), I was in one continuous release of endorphins.

Thus far, that's the best feeling I've ever had in my life.

numist 10-26-2003 12:16 AM

Definitely not what they taught me when I learned martial arts, but still I can imagine how that could have been a great release...

my best feeling in the world was being a camp councelor, having hordes of kiddies wanting piggy back rides and one in particular clinging to me all week. towards the end of camp, she hugged me tight and said "i wish you were my sister". awww. warm fuzzies and i don't even like kids ;P

I'm with you Numist on the goin to sleep with your S.O, but there are so many other feelings in this world that I'm yet to discover, such as holding my own child in my arms, being there for the childs birth and things like that. But maybe one day they will come.. I guess you can only wait and be patient :)

troit 10-27-2003 09:30 AM

I have got to agree with a few of the fellow members comments --there is nothing quite like the feeling of love. Being single again over the past year after being invloved in a five year relationship has taught me the value of love.

When I first split up with the Ex I had feelings of remorse and anger. But as time passed I realized the specialness of love and now am actual thankful for the time we had together. For example -- There is just something about watching an individual you care for sleep. Be it a spouse, SO, close friend or family member -- to be a witness to the peacefulness stirs up the feeling deep inside that compares to no other.

Someday I'll find another and will have learned from my previous actions and cherish our time together rather than squander and take for granted something so precious.

cameroncrazy822 11-06-2003 06:08 AM

That sounds romantic fella but I think the all our, end all be all, best feeling in the world has to be th exact moment when an "O" occurs. It is absolutely a physical and emotional high that is unparalleled.

Petting a dog's head. Being at peace with everything around you and not worrying about anything even if it's just for 5 seconds, that feeling were you don't have anything to worry about.

Also going to the beach with my bf and we were stretched out lying in the sand on our stomachs facing each other, at the perfect point on the beach were the water still trickles over you. I've never had someone pay that much attention to me as he did right then, I felt like the center of the universe.

Going with my best friend to Cozumel and sitting back on the beach looking at the landscape and pretending we were in a Corona beer commercial, because everything looked so perfect!

bollocks 11-13-2003 08:28 AM

I box all over the UK and would have to say the feeling you get when you knock someone down is pretty good. Some people would say thats shallow, but they just don't understand the amount of respect there is in the boxing community.

I also love when you know you're on for some action, like when you've pulled the girl in question, and she begins to get naked. Amazing.

aa1037 11-14-2003 09:53 PM

Some of the best feelings I've ever had were in high school during basketball season.

I was never really a sport guy in the varsity sense, and I had tried out for basketball in 11th grade after I recovered from my broken ankle. I didn't make the team.
I continued to work out and practice with the team. Over the summer, I went to practice almost every day, worked out, ran hard for 3 hours. Finally, the asst coaches (who worked with us over the summer) told me during the summer that despite tryouts in the fall, I was making the team. I started to work even harder.

Here comes great feeling #1: During an early practice in the fall, we were doing ball handling drills and doing a move to the basket. After doing it a few times and getting my finger rolls very high above the rim, I decided, on a whim, to try to dunk the ball. Now, at the time, I'm this skinny 6'2ish white guy (no offense), but I did a little in and out move, and flew above the rim for a thunderous one handed dunk. The whole practice stopped. The kid who couldn't make the team last year was elevating above the rim. I kept doing it :D

Now, fast forward to the regular season. My school was about 1500 kids, 9-12 grade. It was the last game of the season before the playoffs - senior recognition night. We were playing our arch rivals. During warmups, I just looked around. Nothing but people packing bleachers. Our kids going crazy, the other team's supporters yellin right back. Not an empty seat in the house. During the layup line, I start doing these insane 2 handed dunks, wowing the crowd. They cheered me for more.
Great feeling #2: adrenaline rush given to me by the crowd ^

Now, I didn't really play much in that game, or much in the season actually (the coach had a problem with using new people), but when we won that game and sent those f*ckers home.

Oh, and beating the #1 ranked team in the Nassau county semifinals helped too - the most noise I've ever heard out of our locker room in SUNY Westbury (where we played playoff games).

Nothin like sports for great feelings - nothing like knowing girls are watching you when you dunk :P

taliendo 11-14-2003 11:22 PM

I'd have to say my first hit of junk. ahhh the good times....

jk

anyway, even though I'm feeling particularly cynical tonight -- Love. I don't think that there's anything better than looking into someone's eyes and seeing eternity.

a close second would be deep prayer or meditation. I think that there's something really mind blowing in the process of letting go of yourself to gain the ability to see something greater than yourself.

I have gotten awesome feelings from:

(a) 1 minute standing ovation before ~1000 people... first time in my life it happened in 2000... gosh. I was totally at a loss for words. It was at an awards ceremony and I was the only recipient who received this. Even today, the memory makes me cry.
(b) Scoring the winning goal in soccer or blocking the final free kick in sudden death (I used to play offense, defense, and goalkeeper equally well)
(c) Being essential to my ski team's competition... not necessarily being the best, but not disqualifying if it helped us win
(d) Just plain helping a large number of people with community projects, and I have led a few
(e) My work on open-source projects as it helps many people

I hope someday I'll be able to share the sentiment of those who have an S.O. :)

Also, I think I would definitely love to scale a peak the likes of Kilimanjaro. Probably not K2, though. I'm scared shitless of the death zone above 26,000 feet (~8km). I think it is really awesome that people have made it to the top of K2, Everest, and other peaks and lived to tell their tale! The story of the historic ascent of Hillary & Sherpa to the top of Everest in April/May 1953 instilled an awe in me.

Skydiving is another thing on my list of things to do in life.

EDIT: After reading the second page of responses, I'm adding this:

(f) Getting an A in an important class I never expected to get anything better than a B or C in. This happened in Spring 2003 and I was elated. :)

I guess i'm pretty weird, cos one of the best feelings i get is when i'm working to achieve a goal, during the process of achieving that goal. I know i can get it, and i can actually feel and see things moving along toward that end, and it gives me one hell of a rush.

The weird thing is, when i already have it in my hands, when i've already accomplished what i was working to accomplish, i'm not as happy... pleased, yes but not with the rush that was there before.

So i guess, one of the greatest feelings for me is not achieving a goal but the thrill of the chase.

Great point there.

Here's something that most people might laugh at me for but eh...

For some reason I get the best feeling when I emberass myself in public. I was always a shy introverted kid and as a grew up I did a complete 180. Anywho, my friends and I will have the best time just making complete fools of ourselves in public. I go out of my way to do things to make a fool of myself and generate laughter from all the strangers around me. Sometimes it's just fun to be walking along normally then suddenly do the most elaborate trip and fall you can cook up to cause people around to you stare and laugh. I guess I'm a born performer.

xtreemmar1ne 11-24-2003 08:00 AM

Let's see, I would have to say for me it's

1. Scoring the winning goal in shootouts for the division final. And this is me who plays all time defense, usually sweeper, and loves it. Playing soccer is always a rush for me, especially when you and your defense are gelling and you absolutely destroy and offense your opponent has.

2. That rush you get when you're driving down the road in the middle of the night windows down, music pumping, getting you all hyped.

3. Prolly the absolute best feeling I have ever had to date is standing at the Iwo Jima monument on Parris Island after a 10 mile hump and being up for a little over two days on the Crucible. You stand in formation and you recieve your Eagle, Globe, and Anchor from your drill instructors who rode your ass unmercifully throughout boot camp. To get that Eagle, Globe, and Anchor and have your drill instructor shake your hand and say "Congratulations, you made it, you're a Marine." There's nothing like it in the world knowing you have achieved what you once thought was impossible.........wow.

The best feeling in the world is when I wake up in the middle of the night, look around me, have the moonlight shining into my room, my cat snuggled neatly against my chest, and my boyfriend on my other side, snoring gently, while stroking my hand in his sleep. It is the best euphoria that I could possibly imagine.

Rippley 11-25-2003 08:55 AM

2 things come to mind, in no particular order:

1: Nailing a series of curves, on the perfect line, without letting off the accelerator all the way... I love driving...

2: Making a child happy. The feedback is instant, and so sincere!

oh, yeah, and the one with waking up in the morning next to GF/SO, can't wait 'till I find that again...

Feeling safe and loved

Having the unconditional love of my dogs - I don't have human babies yet, but they're my kids for now !

txlovely 11-25-2003 12:33 PM

Laughing so hard you cry and having the person you love be the one that made you laugh (with them, not at them). :)

Cheesebreath 11-27-2003 03:29 PM

Love
Falling asleep with someone you love
Falling asleep when you are really tired
Hot bath when you are really cold
Crawling between silk sheets after shaving your legs, etc.
Adrenaline rush
Lying there after sex and talking
Listening to your favorite music speeding down the freeway in a sports car
Playing drums
Jumping a three foot, or more, jump on horseback
Hearing someone say that they love you and want to be with you forever

Or those are just mine

World's King 11-27-2003 08:25 PM

I've been avoiding this thread for a while... I didn't know what to say but I really wanted to give a respones.

So, here is the best of what I can come up with. The best feeling in the world for me is the feeling I get when I get what I want. I doesn't happen as often as it used to but which is why I don't take it for granted anymore.

1) At the end of a weekend Tae Kwon Do training camp in the woods, running down the side of the mountain, out onto the peir and diving into the lake and just letting the momentum take you down and slowly bring you back up. Its the cool water, the feeling of being weightless after exerting every muscle in your body and echoing sounds in the water relaxing my mind.

2) Getting a blowjob in the life guards chair at night in Ocean City. I graduated at the end of summer and went to OC for the weekend. There was a warm breeze blowing off the water, a thunderstorm was rumbling in from the east and there was a light rain falling. The sound of the ocean, the rumbling thunder, smell of the sea air, the light rain and pre orgasmic convulsions were amazing.

3) Driving along I-10 with the love of my life in the passenger seat of the convertible we rented for our trip from Jacksonville, Florida to San Francisco, CA. The weather was perfect, we had 50 of the best cds ever recorded and a rader detector. We took turns doing 100+ down I-10 stopping in Panama City, New Orleans, Texas and just enjoying a week on the road.

yo cheesebreath, your last example could make some people cry!;-)

The first time I actually made out with someone.

An exceptionally good meal.

All good things. :)

Waking up an hour or two to early and going, woohoo still got another hour.

moonstrucksoul 12-01-2003 06:14 PM

waking up on my days off, next to my wife and knowing, that i, don't have to get up.

12-03-2003 03:04 PM

Love- whether it be a warm gesture or words from my son or the silent exchange of that strong connection between my husband & I, even through troubles, I know it's there, or just helping someone and seeing their expression.

water_boy1999 12-03-2003 04:09 PM

As far as love is concerned, the greatest feeling is waking up next to Julie, and Elayna, and Meagan, and Sharon, and Patty and.....

It is really difficult to pinpoint the greatest feeling because I have quite a few of them. Let's have a looksee:

Getting an ace in a disc golf tournament (have 3 tournament aces now)
Giving a jacket/money to a homeless person
Being home for the holidays with my family
When I graduated and had my family there watching me
Winning (anything)
Sizing up your competition and knowing they don't stand a chance against you.
Flying past a cop doing 90 and him not having a radar on.
Being appreciated for who you are and not by how much money you make, what kind of body you have, who you associate with, etc...

miragetm 12-07-2003 05:16 PM

walking barefoot on shag carpeting

numist 12-07-2003 06:18 PM

Ok, that made me smile....

Shag carpeting is awesome, especially if you're barefoot.

Im suprised more people havent mentioned lying in bed... I was quite tipsy off screwdrivers last night and it felt really good to lie down.

Awesome.

analog 12-08-2003 12:03 AM

Waking up with the one you love lying next to you... watching them still asleep... best feeling ever. I once had this with my ex, when we finally got to live together. It's been a long time since i've felt that same way again....

thingstodo 12-11-2003 07:25 PM

1. waking up next to my wife of 28 years on a cold Saturday morning
2. having my toy poodle crawl up my chest while licking my face when I come home
3. taking a good piss
4. floating in clear water with a mask and snorkle
5. half way through my second Newcastle draft or Fullers ESB

How's that??

lightning 12-15-2003 08:51 PM

One of the best feelings is meeting a new woman who I'm really attracted to, starting a conversation and seeing the connection between us take place.

theinfamous 12-16-2003 02:26 PM

- watching my sports teams win big games
- cuddling with my gf on cold winter days
- watching and reading LOTR
- playing the old skool final fantasies for the first time
- driving home after an awesome workout
- getting barreled
- listening to great music while driving
- nostalgia

Amethyst 12-16-2003 03:35 PM

When my husband puts his arms around me. I love to feel close to him it is the best feeling in the world. The second would have to be when my kids smile.

PeaceFrog 12-16-2003 05:05 PM

-someone playing with my hair
-knowing my friends and boyfriend are happy
-staying up until the sun comes up talking to someone you love
-feeling my boyfriend's skin against mine

wry1 12-28-2003 05:28 AM

The best feeling in the world? Tough one!

I'd have to say relaxing on the boat-ride out to do some scuba diving. All the plans have been made, and it's that in-between time where all you have to do is enjoy the sunlight on the gentle waves, the comraderie of your fellow divers, and reflect on the upcoming dive.

Other than that, I'd say snuggling with someone special - but since most everybody else has already used that one, and since I don't have anyone special at the moment, it's a moot point.

tinfoil 12-28-2003 11:12 AM

When my wife told me we were having a kid, a little Tinfoil 2.0. Alas, it wasn't meant to be.

Christmas with my nephew.

meepa 12-28-2003 01:30 PM

Really hard, uncontrollable, gasping-for-breath, tears-streaming-down-your-eyes laughter with your friends.

When my 3 year old tells me she loves me out of the blue ....there is nothing better ever !

hklong741 01-02-2004 09:47 AM

When my soul told my mind and body that "impossible" is only a word.

isandro 01-03-2004 05:41 PM

My gf can sometimes just touch the core of me [issues, problems however you call it] and offer her assistance in working through it. I'm not really used to having someone so really being there for me and making contact with me like that, so it's a pretty amazing experience.
But shooting down a mountain on a mountainbike at gutwrenching speed can rock pretty much too :)

inphaseneverb4 01-10-2004 09:51 PM

being able to bring things into vivid existance by the power of a little psilocybin and a little mdma.

on the flip side though there is the schitzophrenia im left with in the aftermath.

riptide4070 01-13-2004 07:35 PM
