How do you find the cologne that's right for you?

The subject says it all.

I'm single, it's more than likely to stay that way. I want to smell good/ or something like what can perhaps complement my appearance. I don't want to appeal to men as I'm not gay, and it wouldn't hurt to be able to tease a girl or two. I'm pretty sure there are scents that are specially made to appeal to a certain sex, which is why I specified above. I've never actually used it before so I don't actually know anything about buying a cologne/whatever.

So how do you guys go about finding the smell that's right for you if you're the only one who's going to be checking out the stuff?

If you ladies have any comments / suggestions.. which I imagine some of you might.. feel free to mention. They are all welcome.

When you make a girl purr when she smells you....you've hit a good one - keep with it.

Stilts 05-06-2003 02:27 PM

Ask the girl that you're intersted in to go to the store with you and help you pick? You know how those women love to shop anyhow.:D

my girlfriend actually bought me mine its "curve" and i dunno i really like it but go to a store and like smell em find one that ":resemblesl" you or one you like hope that helps...

I've heard that the strength of scent you wear should correspond to the darkness of your skin. A darker-skinned person should wear a stronger cologne or perfume.

Dunno. Just what I heard. Don't use the stuff myself.

only way is to try them on. even those little strips the cologne stores spray it on so you can smell it arent all that great cause it smells different after it reacts with your skin.

definetely go to a cologne store. They should be able to help you find what your looking for

Cuball 05-09-2003 03:26 PM

those strips are bs imo, you have to smell it on your skin .. ask for some little test portions wich they give u for free..

I used:
Azzaro Chrome
Acqua Di GIO
Polo Sport

Azzaro smell's best (the girls I know say so)

I look at it like this: It's kind of an animalistic nature to be especially pleased when someone smells another person's "scent" (their cologne). There are many thousands of different types of colognes. Some are universally liked, such as Polo Sport, Curve, Tommy Hilfiger, Aqua Di Gio, and others are liked by some people and hated by others. I'm glad you didn't ask what colognes are good smelling because buying off of someone else's opinon is completely going against the reason people wear cologne, IMO. Just go to Nordstrom's and start sniffing around. Realize though that our noses get saturated with smells extremely easily and after smelling about 2-7 colognes they'll start to smell less and less different. Also, it sounds like you've never really messed around with cologne before. Many kinds smell one way in their wet, "spray" form and develop to a different smell over time, like if sprayed on a shirt one night and then smelled the next morning. So don't hesitate to spray some on you in the store and wear it around. If you find it making you nautious or headache-bringing, it probably doesn't agree with your pleasures! I've put on some cologne that seemed to attract more attention and compliments than I could ever imagine. Total strangers would ask me about them, which is great, but other times I've found cologne that I personally love and am yet to get a compliment. It's all relative. Buy what you like!
Just give it time, ask the men and women at Nordstrom what seem to be popular and try on one at a time. Best of luck!

Usually works the other way - find a girl first - she'll tell you what she wants you to smell like.

I got a bottle of Crave by Calvin Klein for Christmas. I've had a lot of female compliments on it. Alot more than Polo Sport that I was using before. To choose whats best for you, just take a friend that will give you an honest opinion, or ask strangers walking by as you test. They have no reason to lie :)

I sport the Polo Sport. It's good stuff. I'd just go to a department store and smell them all, buy small ones of the ones you do like, then ask your female friends what they think.

wear what you like: to me it is a confidence thing. i wear the cologne that i think smells good, and let the confidence of knowing i'm on top of my game handle the rest. my point? wear what you like and i think the rest will follow*

*this theory may require a track record of good taste...

edited to say: i hope that doesn't sound conceited as all hell...
