Tindersticks - Tiny Tears. Sopranos fans will recognize it from Season One just before the big attempt on Tony's life.
Louis Armstrong - Black and Blue.
Beck's latest album is a real downer too, I like it but its a hell of a downer.
Lou Reed - Perfect Day

Cujo 06-03-2003 06:56 PM

Metallica's Fade to Black. Nuff said

Paper Clip 06-04-2003 11:23 AM

Tears in Heaven - Clapton - very sad. His reason for writing it and in the movie: "Rush" - when Jason Patric croaks.

Eggy 06-04-2003 08:29 PM

Eminem - Stan

Ryan 06-07-2003 07:57 PM

Strange Fruit - Billie Holiday

Most depressing and odd sounding song ever. It is based off of a poem regarding the lynchigns of African Ameriacns in the 20's and 30's.. CHeck it out and let me know what you think.

MSD 06-08-2003 01:06 AM

Blink 182's "Adam's Song" jumped to the top of my list of depressing songs after my friend Adam killed himself.

One of the recent sad songs I've heard is "Patricide" NothingFace, but I was also thinking of another song too, but can't remember now.

WhoaitsZ 06-10-2003 02:04 PM

dammmmmnnnn i agree with Beck's Sea Change album. you can be getting head after winning the lottery and still have to fight off suicidal tendencies when it plays.

some music i avoid at times due to sadness:

anything mazzy star
some heather nova - namely Paper Cup
Smashing Pumpkins - a LOT of stuff heh
NIN's Something I Can Never Have & Hurt
Radiohead's Creep and No Surprises and um..... exit to a french theeme or something?
Jimmy Eat World's Don't Call & Hear You Me (HYM is _depressing_)
Testament's Return to Serenity
Metallica's One. heh.

wow. i'll have to make a real list now.. heh..... soooooooooooooo many

KWSN 06-10-2003 02:07 PM

Sparhawk 06-10-2003 07:15 PM

oh goodnes, sorry KWSN i wasnt here then and must have missed it when i posted, it was like 6:00 am and it'd been up for a million hours, i couldnt even think of bands to list for my own post

Spektr 06-12-2003 02:02 PM

Mojave 3. Either very few people have heard of this band, or 90% of those who have commited suicide after being reduced to tears by their music. Holy GOD! This band is soooo depressing, but sooo beautiful. Listen to them, but keep sharp objects at a safe distance.

Dr.Who 06-12-2003 06:25 PM

I'm suprise there is not a single song mention from The Cure or Joy Division.

rainincarnate 06-13-2003 03:54 PM

Doesnt seem to be many british people here - i was the first to mention the smiths

Fantasma 06-13-2003 09:58 PM

The Cure - Disintegration

TIO 06-15-2003 08:10 AM

It's hard to go past The Verve's The Drugs Don't Work
That said, I prefer Ben Harper's cover

Also great:
Paul Kelly - Deeper Water
The Who - Behind Blue Eyes
Machine Gun Fellatio - Unsent Letter
Ben Folds - Rockin' the Suburbs (the whole album)
The Whitlams - Charlie No. 1 (no.s 3 and 2 as well)

Jye 06-15-2003 09:33 AM

Opeth-Still day beneath the sun
Ben harper-walk away
Actally a lot of Ben Harper now that I think of it.

rev_skarekroe 06-16-2003 10:42 AM

I like the Current 93 song I've quoted below. But historically, the most depressing song ever written is this one http://www.phespirit.info/gloomysunday/ sk

Bobaphat 06-16-2003 03:02 PM

the cure, morrisey and Erasure tend to be on the darker side of things.

SocialAbortion 06-16-2003 05:30 PM

Alice In Chains - Junkhead

NIN - Hurt

Simon And Garfunkel - The Boxer

Ben Folds Five- Brick

The Eels- Elizabeth On The Bathroom Floor

and pretty much anything by Nick Drake, Tim Buckley or Joy division.

RoloTomassy 06-17-2003 09:23 PM

I noticed somebody put "Vincent" by Don McClean.... did anyone else find "American Pie" depressing or did I miss the point...?

But here's the list:
"Bro Hymn" - Pennywise
"Sad But True" - The Transplants (no, it's not a Metallica cover)
"Hurt" - Johnny Cash does it more justice than Trent..... just seems more meaningful coming from an old guy

and last.... I didn't see this on any of the lists I read, but "Jeremy" by Pearl Jam

crow_daw 06-17-2003 09:50 PM

Johnny Cash - Hurt
Tears in Heaven - Clapton
The Little Girl - John Michael Montgomery (God DAMN, this song is sad, but hey, after all it is country, The Music of Sadness, The Music of Pain.)
I Miss You - DMX
Dear Mama - 2Pac
Undying Love - Nas

Side note: I took you guys' advice and downloaded God Said No by Dan Bern, and I'm sorry but I just don't get it, I mean I DO get it completely, but what makes it so special? I think its very mediocre songwriting. Sorry, guys.

A Perfect Circle- 3 Libras

whelming 06-19-2003 01:06 AM

The new Lisa Germano album, "Lullaby for Liquid Pig," doesn't have an optimistic thought on it. If that helps.
