Who is your favorite musical artist/band and why?
Mine is of course the KINKS. It's like Ray can know what I am feeling and have a song in his catalogue saying listen to this.
If you read about their careers they are very much like me. Very self destructive the second things seem like they are going to be better than ever. Very dark and loners untrusting of anyone including each other. Vibrant in public with awesome energy. Hard to hate because you see so much talent, but it's wasted by addictions, paranoia, noone understanding, self hatred and distrust, with anger for the fact of just being born thrown in. A few songs that stand out to describe me "Apeman", "God's Children", "Destroyer", "Catch Me Now I'm Falling", The whole "Phobia" album, "I'm Not Like Everybody Else", Dave's "Living on a Thin Line" and "Death of a Clown" and the list just goes on and on. Like I said no matter what I am feeling, this band, (more than any other and more than 99% of the people in my life) can articulate the feeling, and with the dry humor in almost every song can get me to smile and remain optimistic. Who makes you "feel" or can help you through your tough times? Who describes you best through their music? |
All time is unquestionably nine inch nails for reasons too numerous to list. As of late, I have been absolutely fascinated with Autechre. I've bought like 6 or 7 of their albums in the past month. Those who know it, know that words cannot begin to describe what they have done for/to electronic music. Their later works (Draft 7.30, Chiastic Slide and especially Confield) seem to all desire to bring the word known as "music" to a slow stagnating death. It is amazing to listen to, but definitely not for the faint of heart.
|
well i think i would have to agree with brandon's choice of nine inch nails, as my body - exclusively graced by their modest logo in dark black ink - will forever testify... trent's genius perfectly conveys the sense of despair/longing/tragedy that plagued my childhood and still haunts my dreams, so it is not without reason that i should choose his art to symbolize my feelings. however, i've always thought it an absurd task to attempt picking one band or artist over all the rest, so i haven't put much serious thought into it. nirvana would have to be a close contender, though.
by the way.. what is this "Autechre??" ...sounds like something i should know about -- i'll have to check into it. :] |
My all-time favourite band must be Babylon Whores who probably has never heard of - anyway, the best term to describe their music is a term coined by themselves, death rock - combining weird attitude and occult lyrics (not in the common metal sense, though).
Close contestants might be swedish Tiamat and Entombed. :) But to be honest, I don't usually let the genre limits and "favourite bands" chain me too much. The aforementioned are just some that really stand out of the crowd, so to say. |
Everclear has been my favorite band for as long as I can remember. I can listen to "Santa Monica" and it'll just take me away from any problems I'm having. Art has such emotion in his voice, it just gets to me.
But when I need something heavier I listen to AFI. Not only incredible instrumentation, but quite the lyrics. Ya, those two bands are my favorites by far. |
Atmosphere. He can actually rap, and not about guns, hoes, bitches, gangs, or some stupid pop-rap gimmick shit.
|
Nirvana because the music is really damn good. And it was grunge when grunge was not popular. And Kurt Cobain was an awesome musician.
|
Steely Dan is hands down my favorite band because of their infectiously catchy riffs and because their lyrics beautifully capture the existential dilemma of modern man without being maudlin or depressing.
|
The Deftones.
It's odd with The Deftones... they aren't really my normal type of music. As you all know I'm more of a rockabilly kid. I grew up with Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash. But as I got older my tastes changed some and I got into the harder stuff. I got into Nirvana and all that grunge crap. Bands like Primus and the Pixies. But it wasn't really what I was looking for. Then in high school a friend of mine put The Deftones' first album Adrenaline. I was floored. With Chino's voice and how different the guitar was I had found my band. Not a day goes by that I don't listen to them at least once. They have everything you need in a fav band. They never get old and have helped me get laid many of times. The Deftones are the most romantic of all hard/metal bands. Chinos voice is smooth even ehen screaming. And the melodies are slow goin' with sharp changes that go well with the movements of sex... I'm getting excited just talking about it. Gotta go. |
mine keeps changing--at the moment, it is philip jeck, a british turntablist/sound manipulator--particularly "stoke" the duet with jacob kirkegaard and "host"--really beautiful, really hallucinogenic stuff, innovative use of turntables that moves entirely away from the hip-hop framework.
i could make a long long list of other music that i really love, but favorite, right now.... |
I don't think I can pick just one - my favorite depends on my mood.
In terms of frequency of listening, I include The Grateful Dead, Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble, Steely Dan, AC/DC and Barenaked Ladies. I love big guitars with a groovin' baseline. I recently discovered Jet - and am loving there music - straight ahead Rock & Roll. |
i cannot possibly have one fave. but i would say the top ones are:
Duncan Sheik Tears for Fears A-Ha Nirvana Pink Floyd (though its a little overplayed) i really dont know, there are so many, i recently became aware of TOK's fav, Deftones, and i love them.... :)....also didnt know much of NIN's stuff till recently, and they're great too.....lots of favs a more recent fav of mine is Three Days Grace....their lyrics seem to say alot of how i feel sometimes...and Linkin Park has a style that i totally go for, although they are overplayed and a little repetitive |
I'm too young to have an all tiem favorite band.. my tastes are still evolving.. definate candidates are
Malice Mizer - because they have great musical variation and classical, techno, and rock sounds. Dir En Grey - because they are angry, sad, and feeling great pain. I really connect with their sound a good amount of the time. but I listen to so many new artists that I'm never sure |
Talk Talk
There are a lot of runner-ups, but Talk Talk is way above everything else. It is interesting to follow their development from synth pop on "The Party's Over" to the incredible genius of "Spirit of Eden" and "Laughing Stock". |
Styx is my favorite band. I think it's just because they came along during my adolesence(sp?) when I was real impressionable.
I always loved their words and melodies and a lot of their tunes had great guitar solos. |
Quote:
My favorite is Dashboard Confessional. I can remember when I first heard "Screaming Infidelities" on the radio. Something about it just struck me. I called up the radio staion to find out who it was, and promptly went home and downloaded everything I could find. Then went to the store and bought every CD I could find. I have multiple copies of CD's because they've been re-released or have bonus DVD's attached. I've seen them 5 times now. First was in Boston 2 years ago. 2 solo shows which were beyond incredible. I could go on and on about it. There's just something about the music and the lyrics that hits me so deep. |
My favorite is Dave Matthews', I can listen to all of their music, and I really like it..Second is Stabvilo..go to www.stabilomusic.com and go to albums and you can listen to all of their songs...and I also like Counting Crows alot.
|
Yeah, my music tastes are too eclectic and varied for me to have just ONE favorite band\artist. In that spirit, some of my favorites are:
Paul Oakenfold Dave Matthews Band Metallica Counting Crows There are more, but I'll have to run through my playlist of 15000+ songs to find them all. |
Radiohead.
Everything since The Bends. I also love electronic music, but can't name just one or two favourites.. depending on my mood I like lots of artists. |
Quote:
|
Autechre - now that's a name I haven't heard in a long, long time. A while back, my friend became obsessed with these guys over night, and downloaded GIGABYTES worth of their music. he said it was a life changing experience to listen to all of their albums in a row. must be good stuff.
|
Almost forgot, favorite band.....
hmm. That's a hard one. I can give you a handful: Paul Oakenfold Metallica Smashing Pumpkins Tom Petty R.E.M. Chevelle |
i can't narrow it down
there are probably about 30 that i really like otherwise it gets too boring |
My favourite hands-down is the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I like (almost) all their stuff. Especially in the current line up with John Frusciante. Their music just has that quality that reverberates with my soul. The passion in songs like I Could Have lied and they have Under The Bridge. Even now they are experimenting around so much that I never get bored with them. Also there's John Frusciante and Flea in my mind the greatest musical duo out there. If you've ever seen a concert when they huddle in and jam with each other you'll know what I mean. Then there's Chad Smith, sure he bears an uncanny resemblance to Will Ferrel but he holds the record for the largest drum kit played (108 pieces). That man is fantastic. To top it off Kiedis with the beautiful voice and some very quality songwriting.
Oops got a tad long there. Oh well I guess I'm alowwed to go on about my favourite band. By the way Original King we have very similar hair (or at least your avatar has) at the moment. |
Yeah, the Red Hot Chili Peppers is my other favourite.. Everything they've done is great, but my favourite album is definitely Californication.
|
for me it is a toss up between the beatles and the grateful dead
|
Moloko. One of the few bands that gets better every time you hear them, and every time they bring out a new CD.
|
Iron Maiden
They have the badass feel of 80's metal, but their music is much more complex and they sort of have their own style of playing music. Their bassist (Steve Harris) is one of the best in the world, and he plays like a guitarist. They come out with some of the most complex solos. They also have 3 guitarists, which helps cover the gap between the guitars and the bass. |
forgot about this: my favorite live band (over the period of several years)--acid mothers temple.
favorite live band ever: probably the congos. |
Quite a few "favorites", but not one single one:
Deftones - Love chino and stef, awesome live show. I have seen them more times than I can remember and every show gets better. Weezer - Blue album was my first CD ever and will always be my favorite, although I don't really care for the green album and maladroit is crap. Blue and Pinkerton all the way. Tool - Can't go wrong with Tool. Every album is amazing and a work of art. Every time I listen to a tool song I hear something i didn't hear before that just makes the song that much better. |
My alltime favorite is Warren Zevon.
All my life I have looked forward to hearing his next album. Unfortunately, after his passing last September, I have nothing to look forward to. |
In no particular order:
Genesis (OLD Peter Gabriel Genesis or rather anything before 1982, not the sold out dance crap they've put out in recent years) Rush (THE most awesome band on the planet. Period.) Anything by Radiohead Cocteau Twins Nine Inch Nails Pink Floyd Black Sabbath |
The Flaming Lips
|
or The Magnetic Fields
|
Nirvana
Cobain is awesome and whats not to like |
Tom Waits - Brilliant lyrics, great musical composition, soulful, fun.
|
There are so many great bands out there that I love, but I would have to say and always hade said that WEEN is my fave band.
Their versatality and talent gives me everything I could ever want out of music. They hit every oart of the eardrum pallate. and they just don t give a fuck; so their music will always be fresh and not watered down. Som eother music I like is.. WEEN Dead can dance Grant Lee Buffalo Cocteu Twins Enigma Sneaker Pimps Billy Joel Acetone P.J Harvey Paul Okenfeld Pearl Jam St Entienne Beautiful South Slick Rick Tribes of Neurot Violent Femmes Buthole Surfers Jack Johnson Tom Waits Mingus And a whole lot more |
radiohead/red hot chili pepers/jane'saddiction...
iv never really been able to decied b/w these 3 bands theyve all changed my life somehow |
Quote:
|
I started listening to a lot of phish in highschool and still listen to them a lot. In the past few years live started really getting into Umphrey's McGee.
Zappa and The Talking Heads are always on the playlist too. |
My favourite would be Queen
truly talented musicians/academics. I like the fact that they mastered so many genres instead of doing the same shit for years. |
Norman Cook - a.k.a. Fatboy Slim - is the artist I have consistently followed and supported more than any other.
For his sheer quantity of great tunes no-one else comes close for my personal tastes. |
I have lots of favorites, but the all time is Bjork. She conveys emotion in a way that makes my skin crawl.
|
I have a list but at the top, is of course, the one and only...Prince! I just LOVE that man, I wanna take him home with me and have him follow me around all day like on those Starbucks commercials singing to me and making me swoon with his ability to play every existing intrument...particularly the guitar, of course...
Next in line... -Nirvana -Blink-182 -Pink Floyd -Led Zepplin -Liz Phair -Jet -Nine Inch Nails -Lenny Kravitz -No Doubt |
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is the best band of all time because everyone of their songs sounds good.
Peter Gabriel is the greatest singer of all time because of his voice and his amazing renditions of Red Rain and In Your Eyes. |
I am so diversified in what I like that I can't narrow it down to one artist/band or even one genre of music, but here are a few of my faves:
Prince - by far my most favorite Lenny Kravitz Usher Kiss Guns n Roses Chicago The Beatles Seal DC Talk Michael Tait Newsboys The Eagles Dixie Chicks Cypress Hill Bone Thug n Harmony And the list could go on. |
As far as bands of my time go.... PEARL JAM hands down....my favorite band of all time would have to be Pink Floyd. Queen and Yes definitely hold a special place in my heart as well....Freddy Mercury = The best vocalist of all time period no exceptions what so ever. And for just plain ol good ol rock Bad Company fit that bill quite well for me.
Asta!! |
Favorite Musician: John Scofield. He's simply the best guitarist in the world IMO, fresh, inventive, original and influenctial in the Jazz, Fusion, Jam band scene.
Favorite Band: I guess you almost need to break it into a genre thing even though I hate that word. I'll go with Led Zepplin |
Hmmmm....tough choice.
Top 3 would have to be: Rob Zombie - kick ass & campy all rolled into one. What's not to love? Rammstein - awesome fusion of heavy N. Amer guitar and European gothic/classical metal. Live shows are a blast! Static X - energetic songs, good use of sampling, heavy guitars. Evil disco at it's best! |
Definitely Smashing Pumpkins, though Pink Floyd and the Kinks are way, way up there.
|
I would have to say 'Tool'. Incredibly musical band. I love the odd meters, changing time signatures, melodic vocals, syncopation and incredible lyrics. Their videos rock too
|
I tried, I really did, to come up with short list but I cant, I like too many artists.
|
Mike Patton
I'm not one of those blind fanatics who immediately loves everything he touches, but so far everything he's created has been awesome. Everything is unique. Every Faith No More album is different from one another, every Mr. Bungle album is different from one another, etc.. He's not attached to any ONE style other than whatever the hell he feels like. Mr. Bungle - Totally experimental stuff. You can't even put into words what their music is like. Faith No More - Everyone knows them (or should, anyway). Angel Dust is by far one of the best albums I've ever heard in my LIFE. Fantomas - First CD was good for a few listens, but the Director's Cut was awesome. Covers of movie themes! Delirium Cordia was some incredibly creepy stuff. Tomahawk - One of his more "normal" projects. A few songs are merely okay, but overall great stuff. Lovage - Dan the Automator + Mike Patton + Jennifer Charles = sex. Dillinger Escape Plan = craziness - insanity! |
My favorite would have to be Pink Floyd (during the Roger Waters Era) and Roger Waters. I think that the lyrics written by Waters can convey a sense of how I am feeling, and with my background in social services, how I could relate to my youthful clients. I can find phrases and words in the lyrics that you would never think would be in a song (i.e. creeping malaise, myriad, etc). Waters method of listing (Brain Damage and Every Strangers Eyes, for example) tend to give a reference point to a lot of emotions.
|
HOOBASTANK!
I just went to their concert :) And got a severe case of over-exhaustion!! |
Pink Floyd
In their prime decade (the 70's), music was as much about the band's image as the music itself (eg Ziggy Stardust, Alice Cooper, Led Zeppelin, KISS, etc.) Floyd was never about the band members. During the 70's, they could walk down the street and never be recognized because for the most part, they weren't photographed for their albums and kept the stage show big and flashy, taking the focus away from the individuals on stage (and they still do.....no big jumbotron's with closeups of the band members). Plus you have the magical combination of Roger Waters' songwriting and David Gilmour's musicianship. Individually, neither has been as successful as they were together, and with the jazz influences of Rick Wright (and the competent drumming of Nick Mason...he he he) they created some of the most amazing music of all time. Unfortunately, starting with "The Wall", it started becoming about Roger Waters, which is why the band failed in the end. |
Dave Matthews Band
I dont really know why I love them so much. I just do. I saw them three times this summer. In Charlotte, in Raleigh, and in Atlanta. |
^ Thats prolly why. I hear they put on a terrific live show.
Asta!! |
It depends on the genre and I like too much to narrow it down to one band:
Grindcore: Cephalic Carnage/The Dillinger Escape Plan Alt/Prog: Tool/ Five Pointe O Death: DEATH!!/ Vital Remains- Deicide/ Impaled- Exhumed Black Metal - Anaal Nathrakh/ Psycroptic Hard Core: Norma Jean/ Bleeding Through/ The Haunted It'd be tedious to get into each band but I'll just highlight a few: bands like Norma Jean, Tool, Five Pointe O all play music with emotion that's about something. I just love music that's about living for more than what's normally dealt. I like the rest either because it's either good music to hate females/the world to or it's hilarious. They'll all probably be different next week. |
favorite band changes too often
i guess my favorite label is ninja tune though |
NIN, Dave Matthews, A Perfect Circle/Tool, Deftones, Usher, R Kelly, and Ginuwine
|
All time is difficult....favorite for awhile is www.easternstandardtime.com. I'm just a sucker for good horns.
I think all time though, the one band i'll never grow out of is Operation Ivy. I'm 30 and have been listening to them since i was 15. Punk Rock gets no better. No matter who you like, nothing describes music better than: [Sound system gonna bring me back up, one thing that i can depend on] "Try to describe to the limit of my ability: Its there for a second Then it's given up what it used to be Contained in my music somehow more than just sound This inspiration coming and twisting things around Because you always know that its gonna have to go You always know that you'll be back in the cold. Point of depatrure sublimated in a song Its always coming to give me that hope for just a second Then its gone but! [Chorus] Sound system gonna bring me back up...one thing that i can depend on[Chorus] Static pulse inside of music bringing us escape Its always temporary changing nothing in its wake Just a second where were leaving all this shit behind Just a second but its leaving just this much in mind: To resist despair that second makes you see To resist despair because you cant change everything To resist despair in this world is what it is to be free [Chorus] Wake up turn my box on Bust the shade let the sun in times getting tougher bout time to start runnin Box in my hand music by my side Skanking to the rhythm of the music by my side" http://www.plyrics.com/o/operationivy.html I just love 'em. Musically and lyrically. They almost make me want to be liberal, not quite...but almost. |
uncle tupelo
i used to live around the corner from a now late, lamented rock bar in chicago called lounge ax. i'd just wander in there a few nights a week to see if i could catch any interesting new bands.
one night these guys from downstate were there. a 3-piece, none of them looked older than 25. they had a definite twang, which was anathema to me. i HATED country music. i was getting ready to leave when they hit the first chorus. grossly overdriven gibson sg thru a marshall at earsplitting volume. they were using the pixies formula on a country progression......soft, minor chord, almost lullaby-like verse, then just blast the chorus. awesome. later, they covered "brand new cadillac" for an encore. i was hooked. they've long since split, wilco & son volt are/were good spin off bands, but none of the new stuff hits me like that little band of hilljacks that played something twangy that didn't make me throw up. |
Two actually:
Melissa Etheridge: Truth and a lot of talent. She writes nearly all of her stuff top to bottom. She brings me down to earth and gets me in touch with reality. (Ohh, and I am straight, just so you know). Not every fan of hers is Gay/Les. Although you might get that impression if you went to a concert. Odd. Jimmy Buffett: Another talented person who writes from the heart and has the ability to tell incredible stories in a few lines. Quite a wordsmith. He takes me away from everything when reality is too much to handle at the moment. They call is escapism. I call it good music. There are a few others out there that I like, but generally I like to listen to talented musicians. Those who write and compose their own stuff and play many instruments. I just cannot stand no-talent posers who can't play live. I think that is a good judge of talent is how well they do live. If it sounds nothing like the recording then they usually are covering something up with too much processing/effects or post production. |
Avril..I don't know why.
Also: blind melon gnr the trews jimmy swift band |
Mine would be Enuff Z'nuff
Donnie Vie to me is an incredible musician and writes songs that speak to me so well it hurts. There will never be another band like them for me |
Radiohead and Sigur-Rós
both because of the many layers of sounds in every song they make rh - because they always manage to improve themselves and are not sticked to the same style over and over...although they are still able to make a great and simple song (like "gagging order" b-side of hail to the thief) sigur-rós: well...I always thought that music as any expresion of art needs to comunicate feelings, that you can make your own...and for me sigur-rós is just that ...like the soundtrack of my life ... and of course The Beatles (I'm going to steal my father's vinyl LPs), Tchaikovsky and Brahms |
I gotta agree with the NIN peeps, but can't choose them as my fav. That spot is reserved for Rammstein. Most people only know them as that German band that did "Du Hast". Well it's awesome that people recognize them, but I wish it could be for all of their work. And as for extreme, just give "Buch Dich" (bend down), "Küss mich (Fellfrosch)" (kiss me furry-frog[slang for vagina]), "Der Meister" (the master), and the latest "extreme" song "Mein Teil" (my tool[slang for penis]) a try.
They, like NIN, have done a lot for electronic and industrial music. They also put the German music scene on stage for the world to see. Bands like OOMPH!, In Extremo, Stahlhammer, and Megaherz would not have the international fan base they do if not for R+. P.S. - Check out the new videos from Rammstein: Mein Teil and Amerika |

In no order:
Radiohead Rage Against The Machine Led Zeppelin The Doors Weezer |
counting crows - duritz's lyrics can stand on their own as pure poetry. they've often got a catchy and soulful melodic delivery that has spawned countless imitations.
weezer - they're a bit like blink182 in that they combine a bouncy cheerful punk sound with a decent dose of melancholy at times. most punk groups wear on my after a while because of a constant and repetitive sound... but weezer has a variety and complexity of delivery that have kept their music in my rotations since the first time i heard buddy holly. |
Bjork. I cannot get enough of her music she has such an unique voice and her lyrics are beautiful. I also respect and admire Tori Amos, Radiohead, and Neil Young.
|
a lot of my faves (i don't have one) are folk-based- the lyrics are what move me most and I enjoy singing the songs, I have a jazzy/folk style voice.
Jewel, Norah Jones, David Gray, Ella Fitzgerald and also a former local band who I really miss- Sky Cries Mary. |
Tool. I love them, their music is so fucking incredible, its unlike anything I've/you've ever heard. All of the band member's individual talents all flow together eerily perfect, their music is almost hypnotic in a way. I can easily pop in some of Tool's excellent albums and zone out everything in the world, and just sit there for hours listening, wait, not just listening, but understanding their music/lyrics, over and over again. Their music is so powerful and filled with emotion.
Other bands/artists I could listen to for hours are: Tom Petty, Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, Pink Floyd, Blue Öyster Cult, Jefferson Airplane, Cream, The Smashing Pumpkins, Black Sabbath, The Doors, & Lynyrd Skynyrd. |
glassjaw is hands down my all-time favorite. Each one of their songs has so much emotion, it's incredible. Their guitar lines are unconventional enough to remain unique in a genre where just about nothing is. there isn't a single song of theirs that i don't love for one reason or another (this includes each and every demo song they have ever released... i have literally heard every song that they have EVER recorded, in each version, since their infancy)
at the drive-in and the mars volta are also up there, for utterly unique music and overwhelming energy. every time i die and norma jean also make my list because their music makes me want to actually leave my seat and dance around like a crazy idiot. It inspires so much energy in me, it's awesome. |
I go through periods in which I will listen to just one artist. At one time it was Dylan, at other times it was Joe Satriani (yep, guitar player here). Right now my "artist I can't get enough of" is Peter Gabriel. Bought his entire catalog (including the movie soundtracks he did). Fascinating. His music is fun and well constructed musically. Peter draws the easily crossed line between being progressive and being fun to listen to (many modern prog rockers sound like they are playing nothing but scales over and over-not fun. I do that when I'm warming up, I don't need to listen to someone else doing it).
The only thing that will probably break my Gabriel kick now is that it'll be years before he releases another album. Great music, but the guy's a slow worker. |
Children of bodom
Lots of people don't like them if they hear them, but thats cause the majority of music is based on image, vocals and lyrics these days. Bodom are one of the few bands that actually have real talent, along with some of my other favourites, like dream theatre, iced earth, iron maiden and blind guardian(among others) |
I can narrow it down to two:
Great White Duke Tumatoe & The Power Trio I could explain why, if only I had half their writing talents. |
My all-time favorite band is Beulah. They only released 4 albums and called it quits this year. In my ears, they wrote and performed perfect pop songs. If you like the indie pop sound and haven't heard them, I highly suggest trying to download at least one of their songs. "Emma Blowgun's Last Stand" would be a good introduction to them.
|
Jeepers, I think I burn through too much stuff to have favorites anymore.
I guess I'd have to go with anything touched by Tom Waits, Nick Cave, or David Eugene Edwards. That doesn't paint a very diversified picture of my tastes in music, but it really opens up in the top 20 - I promise. :) |
Quote:
Hear! Hear! Which is why I love groups like Rush, Allman Brothers Band (both sound BETTER live than in the studio), and especially Bob Seger, The Band, the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones. You could also throw in Peter Frampton, Queen, Steely Dan, and of course... Stevie Ray Vaughan. |
As a few have mentioned before, TOOL is my fav band since 94. The depth of the lyrics, the western philosophy, spirituality all combined perfectly into rock. The range of Maynards lyrics, the screams, and his onstage performace to me are top notch. An extremely talented band that refuses to sell out, advertise, or give plethoras of interviews and still remain popular over 12 years...amazing )
|
I think right now I'll have to pick two, since I listen to them equally the same above all else.
Nightwish and Lacuna Coil. Thanks to this thread, http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthr...ight=Nightwish , (and thanks Halx and Nefir for introducing me to them) I finally found great bands that I enjoy listening to over and over again. The mixture of a STRONG female vocalist mixed with male vocals and killer guitars are all I need to keep me happy. Plus the girls are hot. :D |
my favourite band would have to the cranberries. their first cd was the first cd i ever owned. i have listened to that album over and over. its one of the few cds i can listen to without having to skip any tracks. well i do have to repeat some of the tracks along the way espicially 'linger' :) they were my first real introduction to rock and tho i admit they are in no way the best band around they are definately my favourite.
|
I am a Dave Matthews Band junkie. If I have to choose one, this is it. There are many reasons, too many to list them all but the top reason is that the band would rather play live than do anything else. They are as good on stage at the end of a tour as they are at the beginning. It is still a concert to them and not a show. It is about the music more than anything else and I love that.
The studio music is great, sure. I have all those albums but if you have never heard them live, you have never heard them. Go see a show, listen to a live CD or get a bootleg from someone but hear them live. Second reason is that DMB allows recordings at all shows so there is lots of music to go around. Not as much as The Grateful Dead but a lot. I have more DMB than 3 or 4 other artists combined because of this. |
Pearl Jam
They have managed to stick to their principles all these years, i.e. avoiding corporate BS through music videos, Ticketmaster, etc. They are willing to sing out against hypocrisy and were one of the first to call out this administration, plus like fine wine, have only gotten better with age. |
For Silverbrain
"Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow What you need is someone strong to guide you" What an amazing song. The first time I heard Opiate, I played the LP over and over again at least 100 times. |
The Weakerthans
Awesome mellow punk/alternative rock band. or maybe Daft Punk just plain awesome... |
Since i'm a huge fan of rap I have to pick Nas as my favorite artist. He raps about more than just the women, the money, and the cars. He focuses on social issues, telling stories, and educates the young kids that love rap music. I can't wait for street's disciple to drop next month.
|
Eric Clapton hands down. First off he is easily the best guitarist of all time. He is easily in the running for one of the better song writers in rock history. Granted he doesn't do much lyrically, he is a pure musician. Also he has been a member is some of the greatest bands of all time Yardbirds, Blues breakers, blind faith, Derek & the Dominos, Cream, and much success as a solo artist.
|
Peter Gabriel -- mainly because of the production values of his recordings. The music and lyrics are usually very thought-provoking. The musicianship is always amazing; the rhythm sections are always outstanding: Manu Katché; Tony Levin etc.

Well i hav a lot off them:)
i like almost every r&b song, why? i dont know its just very good music:) |
For me my all time fave band would have to be The Cardiacs..
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0...1.LZZZZZZZ.jpg Just have to admire the sheer greatness of pure talent - you would need to go a long way to find another band like them thats for sure.. Incredible stage performances, fantastic song writing.. Brilliant musicians as well.. They leave you 'dazed' for days after... But now I've started thinking about things... Kasabian, Firehose, Primus, Franz Ferdinand, Butthole Surfers, Pavement, Bboys, Pumpkins, Bowie, Deltron, Goldie, Muse, Radiohead, Faith No More, etc also all deserve Trisha Stylie 'heeeeear meeee noooooow' mentions.. The list goes on and on and on... ;) |
Incubus, Korn (although I haven't listened to a lot of them recently), Deftones, Tool, A Perfect Circle...so many. Lyrics are huge for me because the whole reason I started listening to music was for lyrics. Rock music I find the best and if you like the bands I listed you could probably fill in with a whole bunch of others that usually go well together.

Right now, my favorite band a small sort-of electronic band out of Nashville (of all places) called Venus Hum. They make the most...lush/warm/embracing electronic music I've ever heard. Anyone who thinks of electronic music as cold and distant should listen to them. Also, the lead singer, Annette Strean, has an amazing voice.
Their biggest album is called Big Beautiful Sky, and they just released a very good but not great EP called Songs for Superheroes. If you've heard that Blue Man Group cover of I Feel Love, the band they collaborated with is Venus Hum. |
Depeche Mode- I find their music to be very moivng and not just pop fluff. Even though I got into them in 1984 I prefer their music from 1990 on. For those of you who just know them as the band that sings Just Can't Get Enough, there is much, much more to them. Give 'em a listen. I'll bet you'll be surprised.

Blue Öyster Cult!
Yes BÖC is by far the best band of this or any other time, and, for that reason, they are my favorite. Not only are their lyrics redolent with a degree of strangeness unparallelled outside a Thomas Pynchon novel and yet accessible to even the most feebleminded teenager, not only is Buck Dharma's axe work a thing of trancendent beauty and mind boggling skill, but an deep, heartfelt, yea! soul-felt appreciation of the Music of Blue Öyster Cult is the veritable sine non qua of abiding coolness. As I said in a previous thread.... Quote:

For me Frank Zappa will always and forever be number 1. Everyone else is number two.
Seriously, I've loved a lot of different music. Top of the list has included: X, The Beastie Boys, Minutemen (and fIREHOSE), Bob Marley, Funkadelic, Jane's Addiction, Beatles...many more have come and gone in my heart. Frank will never be dethroned. His music shaped me. RIP |

fav band... mine would be Smashing Pumpkins... not that they are a current band... they just took the place of Floyd a few years back when i burned myself out on Floyd And yes as for Mr. Mercury... alltime best front man with Mick a second or two in 2nd place and Diamond Dave a solid 3rd. Wow strayed from the subject a little... but all time is hands down Floyd! because they made me realize (at a relatively young age) that music wasnt just some filler shit to make the day pass a little faster. It is my companion, my salvation, my lover, my mother, my inspiration, my outlet, my everything in its certain place and time!!!! |
