From my parents front deck

I just found this and thought I'd share it with you all. On the shore of Lake Michigan.

splain the shore line?....Ice piled by waves? or snow drifts from land side ?
....or is that wave action???

....xoxoxoo

That's definitely snow and ice, although it looks like it wasn't too bad a storm that piled it up. There are parts of the Chicago lakefront that will get snow/ice dunes 8 or 9 feet high at times.

Then again, maybe they melted down.

Great pic, regardless. I really like the plane caught mid-flight. It adds an interesting touch.

bobby, the way it works is kinda cool when the temp drops below freezing as small amounts of ice form they crash together forming like snowballs and they crash together getting bigger and bigger as the waves get bigger these ice balls slam the shore creating mounds some as large as 10 feet or more as The Jazz said. I've see these crashing ice balls six or eight feet around. On low wind days some flat areas of ice balls freeze together and thus you may have two or three rows of ice mounds. When I was younger and able bodied we used to explore and areas where the waves pounded the mounds they left an occasional ice cave that would sometimes fit 3 or 4 people. Really cool but probably not very safe.

I found another one, this is cooler because it show the ice breaking up and refreezing.
See out farther how it's freezing over but in between it's shallower so the sun has it melted.
I should go through my picture's more often!

hmm i've lived in chicago for 15 years, and have yet to see an ice dune. Of course, i don't go out to the lakefront too often at all during winter, especially not in weather cold enough to create one. Now i really want to see one, but it's spring... oh well...
as for the photo, the shoreline is very interesting!

After the big storm of New Years 1999, I trekked out from my apartment to the lake front at Belmont Harbor. That storm had lots of snow and lots of wind. There were drifts 15' high on parts of the breakwater, and ice dunes from the harbor south to Fullerton.

I was out at Montrose Harbor a few weeks ago and they were still there, although I expect that they've melted by now.

nice pics of a sweet spot. enjoyed a few cold ones there over the years, I imagine.
