Kerry on Letterman

Did any other TFP'ers watch this? What did you think?

Quite honestly, I was embarrassed for the man. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to tear at him... but he just seemed out of place with a seemingly flat sense of humor and delivery. When he started talking politics it wasn't so bad, or else at least he didn't appear to be on the wrong set.

The man just has very little personal likeability or personal gravitas to me. Of course my reaction will be different from a person whose politics differ less, but I think a lot of people would share my impressions on this.

Well, I'd rather have a politician than a comedian in office... no doubt about that. but, I don't think his campaign fairs well in these venues. The man just seems so uptight and out of touch with communicating with regular people.

holy crap! You're really fast.

I don't have to like the president. I'm not looking for an uncle or a best friend. I'm looking for someone who will at the very least fuck up less than W has.

I think that if we looked strictly at the issues Kerry would win by a landslide. But as you pointed out, we don't do that very well. That's why i'm still predicting a Bush victory - though I was glad to see Kerry FINALLY launch a few attacks at Bush for a change.

I have to admit the top ten "Cheney can claim Bush as a dependent" cracked me up.

Rdr4evr 09-20-2004 09:48 PM

Wasn't Bush on Letterman before? I remember him cleaning his glasses with a womens shirt without her noticing....I think it was Bush.

I respectfully refer interested parties to this thread, on "Why I think Bush will win". http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthread.php?t=68905

Many people disagreed with me that "charisma" was important.

Go figure (as you Americans charmingly say).

Is "charimsa" the way Bush says it? ;)

I actually enjoyed his appearance, but I admit I am a fan. Overall, these types of appearances have gone over well for him. Is he a great comedian - NO, but if you give him a well-written line, he can deliver it fairly well. And yes, the Cheney claiming Bush as a dependent line was a riot - even a VERY right-wing friend of mine called me today to tell me how funny he thought that line was.

yeah it's funny if you buy into the mindset that Bush is a complete idiot. That sort of humor relies on some sort of semblence of truth; and might have worked 4 years ago, but being that Bush won the election in 2000 by liberals underestimating who and what he his, I would've thought the democrats would have learned their lesson by now. It's high time to get off that road, even at the cost of making a little funny.

Don't you mean "misunderestimating?"

I'll tell you in two months (the election is on Nov.3rd, as soon as you've figured it out, don't forget to vote).

...you're so easily sidetracked.

Hey, at least I can pronounce nuclear :)

Since we seem to be spouting one liners:

I decided to watch the liberal love-fest on Letterman, before I decided against it.

Haha, that'd be funny except that Bush also threatented to veto the same bill he was accusing Kerry of harpooning. Life is so much more difficult when you actually pay attention to the facts.

WOW, a bit touchy aren't we. Letterman pokes fun at everyone, and Bush and Cheney regularly make jokes at Kerry's expense. Bush is a big boy and can handle himself. In fact, I bet Bush thought it was funny too. You see, he actually has a sence of humor and is comfortable making fun of himself. See the following excerpt from his Convention speech:

BUSH: You may have noticed I have a few flaws, too. People sometimes have to correct my English.

(LAUGHTER)

I knew I had a problem when Arnold Schwarzenegger started doing it.

(LAUGHTER)

Some folks look at me and see a certain swagger, which in Texas is called "walking."

(LAUGHTER)

(APPLAUSE)

Now and then I come across as a little too blunt, and for that we can all thank the white-haired lady sitting right up there.

(LAUGHTER)

Let's be honest, this election has been longer, harder and fiercer than any in recent memory. A little humor can only do us come good. :D

irateplatypus 09-22-2004 12:19 PM

i actually thought letterman did a good job interviewing him considering the format of show he runs. letterman didn't try to play hardball with him, he's a tv personality and comedian for goodness sakes. but i did think he asked pertinent questions and followed up when he felt kerry didn't give him a satisfactory response.

more than i was expecting from letterman anyway.
