How do women get into this sort of thing, does a person come up to the women on the street and gives them a card etc...

Recruiting is very rarely done on the street, that's not very professional. There are agencies that handle this stuff. Women need the money, so they contact the agencies and then get cast.

I don't know about women, but I've heard from a lot of people that in order to be a male porn star, you have to start out with gay porn.
I've decided to become a librarian instead.

If I had to guess, then I would say, maybe when they are still sorta young, like 18, they are on there own, and they really need money. So they start off at a Strip Club, and then either someone tells them or they hear that they can make more money if they are willing to do porn. And boom, there ya go, another potential porn star is born.

Director
Producer
various executives from the company making the porn
Script Supervisor
Gaffer (light technician)
Sound tech
grip(s) (people who carry around cables and shit)
other actors in the movie
makeup artists
hair people
people to spray you down/put vaseline on you/lube you

ALL in the room. Or nearby, walking around. But somewhere, they're watching, and you KNOW they are.

...and that's a pretty lowball estimate, depending on the scale of the production.
