dating someone close to you
 

now I wouldn't say this person is close to me, but it's one of those touchy situations where you don't wanna mess things up

like if you were dating a friend of a friend....mess things up and you might lose your original friend

my situation is different (and a bit worse if it were to become awkward), but how do you approach such things and end up not screwing yourself in the end (if) things go sour (which hopefully they wouldn't)? does it just take time, or being careful, or what?

Being careful and taking your time are very important. Don't put any pressure on the person you are interested in. I would suggest starting with a casual group outing. Then as you get to know said person, perhaps move more toward hanging out minus the group, and then toward a date-type outing.

Should things not work out, for whatever reason, it may create a temporary rift, but should not permanently damage the friendship in question. Just don't be a jerk about it, and your friend (if indeed they are a good friend) shouldn't have problems.

Yes, i completely agree. Take your time. Remember friendships come first as great as romance can be it could be only fleeting where friendship could last much longer. Just take a breath and get to know him/her that way you will be ahead.
