DTV tuner for iPod touch/iPhone

Does anybody know if they make one of these yet?

This might work if I carry my computer around. But I would like one that could fit on the back of my iPod and have it's own battery.

I suspect that no company has even considered this. A DTV tuner uses considerable "juice" to power it's chip that handles codecs and selects the correct signal (1080,720,etc). The product you linked to is using the MAC CPU to do these tasks. I'm not sure the low voltage cpu of the Iphone could ever do this on the fly for more than say 1 hour. Even with an extra battery that would heat the CPU considerably since a DTV tuner monitors the other input feeds while displaying one. That means it's doing much more than simply decoding and playing a single file like the iphone does.

Yeah, one of the major drawbacks to the DTV switch is pretty much the end of portable TV devices. Do you like taking your handheld TV to the ballpark to watch the replays and get closeups... too bad. Ditto for a battery powered or DC powered small TV in the camper/SUV/car on the road. At least for now, I don't know of any company producing small digital ready sets or decoders small enough and energy efficient enough to used this way. Let alone a device to work with your Ipod/Zune/Sansa etc.

I just read on-line that China wants to start inventing new products. Well, here is one that would get people interested. It doesn't have to be 'small', but I think it can be done if you throw enough engineers, money, and tech at it.

Perhaps halfway there... I heard that Slingbox will be coming out with an iPhone solution soon.
