Buying Bookshelf speakers

I am looking to buy a new set of front R&L for my 450 watt surround sound reciver. it has the mini type speakers right now, and i would like a little more punch from the stereo as a whole when i play music, hence wanting the bigger speakers. My ? is can anyone tell me what brands i should look at, and anything else that would be useful in my quest. as a side note i would like to mention i am in college. so nothing to extravagent. thanks for all your help

to update... the amp produces 80 watts max per channel at 8 ohms. also does anyone know how i can up grade all my wires inexpensivly?

How many watts will be going to each speaker? At how many ohms?

Cerwin Vega have excellent sound quality.

When it comes to speakers, size doesn't always matter. Maybe you just need a good sub. I'd go to any audio/electronics store with sound rooms and just listen to all the different speakers. Then buy what you like!

I go to cambridge soundworks for everything. I love their speakers. Real value for the money. Only other option I would do is Best Buy, but I would have to do som much research, etc. Camb. SW has a limited number of components and their own brand of speaks and I have learned to trust them and have been rewarded with a great sounding stereo for a decent price.

I just have the ensemble II which is only $200 now. Not a powered sub but sounds great. I would suggest you go to their site at
http://www.cambridgesoundworks.com and type in "ensemble" and look at those choices as a starting point. THere might be a store or reseller near you - you can look up locations on their site.

I second the vote for cambridge soundworks at hifi.com. I have the new ensemble II's from six years ago when they used to cost a bit more, but they were a steal when Best Buy was dropping the brand. They had some pretty good reviews at the time.
