DDR Ram: What speed?
I'm building a new computer. I'm getting an MSI KT4V mobo (6712), so I can handle basically any DDR memory that's out there today. I'm looking at getting 2 256mb chips or 1 512mb chip. I can get the 256's at PC2100 for $20 apiece after rebate. My question to all of you is:
Is it worth it to splurge on faster RAM, since I'm getting this ram so cheap? i'm poor... :p |
It depends on what processor you are going to get. If you get a proc with 266Mhz Front side bus that would be fine if your not going to overclock. If you are going to get a proc with 333Mhz FSB you should get minimum PC2700. Since that board has the KT400 chipset, your not going to see any performance gain from 2 RAM chips compared to one.

i'm getting an Athlon XP 2500+, 333 FSB. so you think i should hit up the pc2700 then?
|
Defintley go with the 2700
|
If your going to overclock, go with DDR400.
|
if you're going w/ overclock, make sure that you get a name brand that's being overclocked, like micron.

I'm not gonna OC, and DDR400 is a bit expensive for me. However, TigerDirect has 512 mb sticks of PC2700 for $39.99, so that's the way I'm gonna go. Thanks guys

Good choice, you definitely want to run your fsb and your ram at the same speed to get the most out of that chipset |
