Just hearing the breaking news now. Supposedly taken out by a SAM. Almost 300 dead.

So horrible. And what a political firestorm this will surely cause.

This is shocking. Mostly because this kind of thing doesn't happen that often. But, of course, there is also the overall impact it may have on the region.

    But seriously: holy shit.

The Ukraine/Russia thing has just gone international.

Early reports I heard today said it was likely one of these: Buk missile system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ukraine military has them, and the separatists have said they've got them from bases they took over. The separatists had also claimed at almost the same time that plane went down that they shot down a large cargo plane. Putting two and two together I'm guessing either the weapon malfunctioned and hit the wrong plane, or the guys firing it didn't know how to use it properly, or something like that.

It amazed me a bit too that flights haven't been diverted out of that area until today.

The huge lose is the number of AIDs specialists, workers, and activists who died.
It looks like some of the best in the field died because some asshole thought he was shooting down a cargo transport plane.

They haven't proved the tape that was released of a conversation between a rebel and a Russian intelligence official where the rebel is bragging and the Russian is telling him he screwed up but I would be surprised if it was fake.

Can I just take a moment here to say that I think that Putin is probably my least favourite person? I think I'll just put that out there. The brazen attitude of somebody caught with their pants down. To quote the Star:

More bodies found at MH17 plane crash site as UN vote looms | Toronto Star
Putin lashed out against those criticisms on Monday, accusing others of exploiting the crash in east Ukraine for “mercenary objectives.”
Putin said Russia was doing everything possible to allow a team of experts from the International Civil Aviation Organization, a U.N. agency, to investigate the scene. He also again criticized the Ukraine authorities in Kyiv for reigniting the fighting with the pro-Russian rebels who control the crash site.
“We can say with confidence that if fighting in eastern Ukraine had not been renewed on June 28, this tragedy would not have happened,” Putin said. “Nobody should or does have a right to use this tragedy for such mercenary objectives.”

This is the guy that sent in his soldiers at the close of the Olympics this year.
