Couch Surfing?

Has anyone couch surfed while traveling?
    Was it a good experience?
Are the good sites other than couchsurfing.com?

Two of my female friends and I are traveling to Nashville next month, and two of us are considering couch surfing. We don't know if it's really a good idea or not, but it seems like a good way to stay someplace fun for cheap. Some advice would be handy.

I like my privacy too much to be that adventurous. I bet you could meet some interesting (in both good AND weird ways!) by doing that a few times. The old fashioned side of me says it wouldn't be that safe for girls to do, but I guess if there are three of you there is some safety in numbers. If you do, you'll have to report back in detail!

Not for me, I'm a little skittish when traveling and enjoy a locked door.

I'm skittish as well. Now, if I had contacts/friends/old coworkers that lived where I was headed, that would be cool. I would totally crash on someone's couch for a couple nights if I knew them. Or even knew someone who knew them....if the original person was a good friend.

Otherwise, nah. Not for me. I do enjoy the IDEA of it, though, if that makes sense. If you decide to do it, be careful...and let us know how it goes! :)

    No, always want my privacy.

Even when cruising around Europe during my college years, I avoided the hostels for the simple fact that I didn't have my own room.

If any of you guys end up visiting Singapore, let me know. I have a couch upon which you can crash. At the very least, I will buy you a beer and show some great places to eat.

I've stayed at friend's houses before. But the one time I did something like this, the guy got drunk, thought I stole his checkbook, and it wasn't the best experience.

I go camping all the time, maybe you can look for a campground and bring a tent? It is a good time of year.

  8. I've slept on a lot of couches, both during my formative years playing musical parents and a less than formative year or so playing "binge drinking is fun!" I've never had a good night's sleep on a couch. Perhaps if a BYO inflatable mattress/pad/sleeping bag were involved, it would be ok as far as comfort is concerned. I've got a thing where I don't sleep well unless it's where I call home. Given all other alternatives, I prefer to sleep in the back seat of my truck, camp out, or get a hotel.

The idea is terrifying. Yet exciting at the same time.

I could never do that. I don't trust people enough. Now, if it was one of my buddies from the navy days, in a heart beat. But no way could I sleep well crashing in a strangers house.

I haven't yet as my other half would have a fit if he thought I would even consider it. However I have followed the website for a few years and it seems to be self policing as it is all based on members reviewing and backing each other.

This seems like the sort of thing I would do if I weren't married. I'm not sure if that says that I think it's not too risky for me, but is too risky for her, or if I just feel a desire to provide better for my wife when we travel. There's also the fact that she would never consider it, so it's a moot point.

i can see you gave up on this topic, but i must say that couchsurfing is great, and 99% safe at least in Europe. I'm not saying it's great just because it's for free, but because you have the opportunity to meat really great and normal people. Just take some time to check out people's profiles, choose a female host or a couple if you're suspicious of men, and have fun. There is also hospitalityclub.org which was created before couchsurfing and there is one newer website...but i can't remember how's it called...oh yes, bewellcome.org
