Did a search and didn't find anything on GW2 here yet. It appears to be one of the more highly anticipated MMO's coming out this year, so I figured I'd start something.

I've got my pre-order in, and I'm anxiously waiting for release.

Anyone else looking forward to this too? Or is everyone on the Diablo 3 train?

im looking at both of those and also the secret world. i think i'm going to wait a bit though on the mmo's and see how their launches go. right now i'm completely hooked on gotham city impostors anyway.

I haven't looked into Secret World or Gotham City Imposters. Aren't both of those on Steam? I seem to remember seeing ads for them.

I keep going back and forth from GW1, Dungeons and Dragons Online, Lord Of the Rings Online, and EVE. Because of my schedule, I usually stick to the F2P MMO's, but EVE is one of those games where I'll break down and purchase a sub for a few months, then quit for a few months. I always come back to it. When I REALLY feel like geeking out I fire up Magic: The Gathering Online for a couple casual matches.

I've been looking forward to GW2 since it was announced so I wasn't too worried about the $60 upfront and I like that there's no sub fee. I'm hoping it's as good as advertised and it holds my attention. I tend to be a casual gamer and I solo a lot, so when I run into something I can't do by myself, I make a half-assed attempt to find people for a while and then move on to other content, or another game. If I have to grind levels, I tend to get bored. I'm not chatty in games either so it's seldom I log into a game just for the social aspect of it.

And yes, I understand that the social aspect is really one of the major advertising points for playing an MMO, I just like playing a game that I can't ever really "beat."

Haven't really looked too closely at Diablo III. The first two didn't really hold my attention very long, so I haven't really been keeping tabs on it. I have seen some clips and I may try it sometime, but we'll see.

This looks really good, and normally I'd be all over it. But I have concerns about how it would perform on my PC. I already have issues with Star Wars: The Old Republic in this regard. Of course, I love the idea of no monthly fee. The bigger issue: I'm trying to resist MMOs. They're too open-ended, making them some pretty serious time sinks.

MMOs have kept me away from playing the following games on the PS3 I've collected over the months: Assassin's Creed 1 & 2, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Skyrim, Mirror's Edge, Rocksmith, God of War 1 & 2, and Little Big Planet.

I also got (for dirt cheap) the following games on PC: Tropico 3, Medieval: Total War 2, Napoleon: Total War, and Empire: Total War.

The ironic thing is that these games came cheaper than what I would have paid into MMOs over the past year or two. I want to stop paying that monthly fee for good.

I think I want to play games that are either story-based (i.e., a beginning, middle, and end) or have open-ended gameplay that can be more compartmentalized (i.e., you don't feel the need to endlessly "progress, level, grind, and loot").

However, if I get a new PC within the next year or two (which is doubtful), all bets are likely off.

I got Skyrim on PC through Steam when it was released. IMO a great game. First time through played with a standard melee fighter type, started a second character kind of as a thief/assassin type. Was having more fun the second time through, but I get sidetracked easily, so it's been a while.

I feel your pain, though, I have an XBox and got Gears of War 3 and CoD MW3 last Christmas. Still haven't finished either campaign...

I also get into strategy games from time to time. I was hooked on the Dawn of War series for a while, then DoW II, and I'm a Civilization V fan as well.

My thing with MMO's is that I'll find myself hooked until it starts to take too long to gain levels. The first few levels go really quickly, and I'll have a ton of fun, then depending on the game, at some point it starts to feel like a grind to me. Once that happens and I have to start sinking a lot of time into it game, I lose interest. Consequently, I try to stick to the F2P ones.

Meh, any good gamer has a dozen or so games on the go at once, right?
I know I've got games started across all platforms. Some I haven't touched in years.
I just go with whatever's got my attention at the time. And what I'm in the mood to play.
Currently, thats SWTOR, since its pay to play. And I've got two characters really close to level 50.
I went to a gaming con last weekend, and got beta keys for a ton of games. GW2 and Secret World among the pile.
I was planning to get GW2 anyways, but I cant WAIT to try it out!
And I demo'd the Secret World while I was there. It was quite broken. But we'll see how the beta plays out.

I think maybe I'm just not a very good gamer, but I don't get the whole MMO thing. I'm expected to pay $15 per month to get called a noob and do things that sound suspiciously like a job instead of a hobby? And people do this willingly?

That's actually one reason why I'm not all that social. However, in most of the games I play there's a pretty good community. EVE especially has a pretty helpful group of players as long as you make an effort to learn before you go asking simple questions. But at the same time, EVE is about PVP so you still can't really trust anyone.

That being said, you can't take comments like that seriously. I'm a casual player, so I will probably always be considered a "noob" in someone's opinion. If I get those responses when I ask a question, I usually respond with an LOL and then block them.

As far as doing stuff that sounds like a job goes, that's why I've never lasted long in a guild. If people start to expect minimum login times, I bail. I refuse to let my hobby turn into a second job.

The one guild I was in was in the game Fallen Earth. The group existed only for people to join who didn't want to be harrased by requests to join guilds. We were called Drifters and it was a group of people who liked solo play and didn't want to get all that serious.

Really, the reason I play is because I like RPG's and I like the idea of a game that has continuously changing content. Always something new to do without seeing the credits roll at the end. IMO, successful MMO's offer continuous updates and new content. Unless the game is WoW, getting away from the nasty 14 year old players isn't too difficult. :)

gotham city is on steam... it's not an mmo though, it's a zany shooter a lot like tf2 but with some twists. secret world i don't think will hit steam. it's made by a company called "funcom" which doesn't have the greatest track record but even with that said it looks really cool so far.

my buddy is hitting me up real hard for gw2 though so that might be the first of the 3 i get.

Actually, Age of Conan is a good game, especially after its update. I just wish I had a better system to run it. I haven't played Anarchy Online, but I've heard good things. It's been around for a while.
Secret World is designed by the guy behind Anarchy and The Longest Journey and Dreamfall, and it includes many of the same development team behind Conan.
All that considered, I'd say there's some potential there.

i just got out of the last beta weekend event last weekend and i cannot wait for this game to come out.

first thing i'm noticing is not only the beautiful artwork which contains a touch of cell shading a la borderlands, but the SMOOTHNESS of the framerates and animations. wow never performed so well for me and even though this game is spanking new, it's like a ferrari on my middling gtx 460 gpu.

next up i love the way they do skills. buttons 1-5 on your action bar are based on weapon. depending on your class, you can go 1hand/off with say a dagger or mace with a "focus" for your magic in your hand, or you can go staff 2hander, or if you're a melee-er you can go dual wield. whatever weapon you equip has it's own unique set of skills. so no training as you level up, just cool variety w/ the weapons. then your 5-0 keys have utility skills that you unlock with points and can swap out anytime.

finally on gameplay... they've really culled the creme of the crop from all other rpg's... from the cut scenes of mass effect to the world events of warhammer. and they also do a great job of mixing in both worldvworld and single pvp.

i'm in a flourishing guild thanks to my buddy that's topped out the WvW stuff on all the betas. if anyone's on board for this pm me and i can see about recruiting you in.
