How far we have come

Discussion in 'General Discussions' started by Amnesia620, Apr 15, 2015.

  1. It has been too long since I have been active on here. However, I have missed this place. It was home - a place for my sanity - for a few years. It was a place I grew and shared. It's amazing that, back then, Facebook wasn't really a thing...Twitter wasn't as active...and Instagram hadn't been created yet.

Today, people all stand and sit in the same room on their phones, laptops and tablets. How we communicate is by text, pictures, funny memes and email. It's amazing how much things have changed in 5-7 years, online. Thoughts?

So very true, when I first came on board, I remember when Deadjournal first started.
I was downloading music from AudioGalaxy (RIP) and part of the community there.
A TB was the holy grail of hard drive space and I was just starting to talk to Jadzia.

  3. I was blogging back then. I was pasting poetry on here (the old TFP, anyway) and I was laughing at Tecoyah's jokes. I had a bit of a crush on him back then. It's funny how life has taken me on a journey I never thought it would...

When I started out here, I was only twenty!

  5. It's been like 9 or 10 years for me...I look back and good grief, I had a lot to learn...I have become a wife, a mother, a widow, a survivor...

With parts made in Japan, you are the modren man....

You see, folks, 9er's got a secret he's been hiding under his skin. His heart is human, his blood is boiling, his brain IBM. So if you see him acting strangely, don't be surprised.

But he's not a robot without emotions, and he's not what you see. He's come to help you with your problems, so we can be free.

He is the modren man who hides behind a mask. Thank you very much, 9er, for doing the jobs that nobody wants to.

Still prefer the board...the other stuff is too random and mercurial.
Here you can ponder if needed and expound.
    I like the focus.

Oops, sorry, I should've specified Rick Deckard from the novel because that RD best matches BG's description in post # seven.

And now I'm questioning why I'm even posting this. It's time me step away from the computer for a while.

He's a little Jack Reacher, a little Jack Ryan, and a lot of skinny Jack Black.

Life has certainly sent me on a number of twists and turns since I started frequenting this place.
I'm not sure where my life would be now without it.
I know I would not be where I am now.
There are a lot of friendships here that mean more to me than I ever anticipated.
People have come and gone from this place.
New people have popped in as others have moved on.
The voids left by those who left are not filled by any means, but the shift that happens with the flow of individuals has always been good for me - changing my perspective one conversation at a time.
I have a child now, and one on the way.
I'm writing my dissertation for my PhD in Botany.
I'm working as a teacher for infants.
Life has sent me in directions that I never anticipated, and the people in this space have encouraged me every step of the way.

when I first started watching this community, I wasn't a member, and I was trying to reboot my career (or job). Couldn't join up because the company wouldn't allow the use of forums. Now I'm planning my retirement in about 4 years. How did that happen? What does anybody do upon retirement? I'll certainly spend more time here.

A broader perspective on how far "we, the people" have come since I first made a political post in TFP:

Only one state (Mass) legalized gay marriage at the time.

Tomorrow, the US Supreme Court hears oral arguments that should lead to striking down all state bans on gay marriage.

How far we have not come:
Still no live TV or any video of oral arguments before the Supreme Court and only delayed audio.
