How often do you get your carpets cleaned? HIre it out, or DIY?

This afternoon a guy is coming to clean our carpets. I'm just curious as to what TFP does. We've rented cleaners in the past, but by the time you rent the machine (and some of them aren't the best because they are beat up rentals), buy the cleaner, and do all the work, you aren't saving that much IMO. So this time we found a local guy who has awesome internet reviews and giving that a shot.
For three large bedrooms, two hallways, a big living room, a dining room, a couch, and a love seat, plus moving all the furniture around himself, he's charging $230. He said that is the full treatment, there will be no upcharges or upsells once he gets here. I found a few places cheaper by a touch, but none in his price range that had as awesome of reviews as he has. So I guess we'll see in a few hours if it was worth it.
So how often do you get your carpets cleaned?
Do you rent (or own) a machine, or hire it out?

That sounds like a decent price to me. I tried to do it myself once, let's just say it turned out real bad. I've had it done since then professionally and it cost me $250. And j got pretty much the same as you.

I was a little surprised when I saw the breakdown of the quote. If I hadn't added in the couch and love seat, he was going to do it for $120. Those two combined were $110 of the total. I'm glad I had them done, but I don't think I'd need to every time.

He's almost done and I'm pretty pleased with the results so far. :)

    That's good.

Yeah I had my guy do a couch and loveseat and 2 big ass chairs. That was over half of mine. Im glad that you're pleased. Plus you will recommend them to someone else. I had mine done by a locally owned company. :D

Yup, I love patronizing local businesses whenever possible. I found him through Yelp!, and I'll be leaving him a nice review. He's all finished and it looks great.

We only have an area rug and a runner made out of a carpet remnant in our house, so we don't hire out. We rent a Rug Doctor once a year or so and do it ourselves. We also get the upholstery attachment and clean our one upholstered chair while we're at it. We used to have more upholstered chairs, but we got rid of them. I can't say it makes our area rug look any better, but at least I know it's been cleaned.

We have a couple area rugs and a guy comes and picks them up and brings them back clean. It costs us about S$110.

From what I can see, you can't rent carpet cleaners here. In fact, carpets are pretty rare in houses here.

Sounds like you got a good deal. How often you clean depends on the wear the carpet gets. At my house, we take our shoes off as soon as we come in so we are only walking on the carpet in socks. The carpet is vacuumed daily because of birds, so the carpet cleaner does not have to come out too often. Glad you are happy with the results.

That's what I did in Boston. I didn't have any tacked down carpet, just a variety of area rugs, 'cause I like hardwood floors.:) The cleaning company picked up the rugs and brought them back clean and dry a few days later. Including moving furniture as necessary, which was nice.

At the house in Lincoln it's about the same, mostly area rugs. But the master bedroom is wall-to-wall carpeting, along with about half of the adjacent bathroom. I have to admit, I like the feel of it under my cold bare feet in the winter.:)

But I hate beige. Call it what you will, (Desert Beige, Cloudy Beige, Adobe Beige, whatever...) given some time, it all turns into Dirty Beige.:(

    I cheated.

I had all the carpet removed and hardwoods put in before we moved in. Rugs..they're picked up and returned. I do the upholstery myself.

I bought a $220 hoover steam cleaner two years ago. Use it often, saves a lot in the long run. My Jack Russel loves to dip up the back yard and bring it back in with him. I have a beige color rug and it looks pretty good.

I have an upright steam cleaner, a canister that was my grandmother's, and a small portable one I use on the cars. To go over the whole house including upholstery takes around half a day plus drying overnight.

I bought a steam cleaner in my last house. That was over 10 years ago. I think I may have used it once. I have no time to do it myself. I hired a professional to clean the apartment. He charged me $80 for a master bedroom and the large living room, plus a small hallway. He didn't have to move any furniture. He also didn't use my electric or water. Everything was in his van. He brought the carpets back to life. I was very impressed. I will be using him again once there is no furniture upstairs.

  14. Norwegian old fashioned way - throw on clean snow and sweep it out with a stiff broom - any dirt sticks to it - like slush.

I'm an adamant DIYer and I would prefer to rent a machine and go crazy on everything in my house... I feel I have more of an accomplished feeling doing it myself. Although... if I wasn't so frugal, I'd be more than willing to give someone else a go.

I own an upright cleaner with attachments and it usually only comes out if one of the dogs get sick. Other than that it's usually just vacuum really.

  18. When we moved into our condo, we hired someone to clean the carpets. It was worth the money and I will never rent a DIY machine again. That said, we will be moving in a couple of years and hardwood floors will be a must. I don't like carpet.
