Solaris - The brilliant 1972 film by Andrei Tarkovsky, not the 2002 Soderbergh/Clooney "love story in space" version.

This is "psychological science fiction," so it gets pretty quirky/weird. I love it.

They recently released it on Bluray, which apparently has some restoration work done on it. (Actually, I'm tempted to get this myself.)

Brainstorm is an intelligent and moving science fiction from 1983 starring Christopher Walken, Cell 211 is a recent Spanish prison film with some brilliantly tense stand-off scenes and the Pusher trilogy is a hugely entertaining, addictive and deep Danish crime saga that easily stands up against the Godfather trilogy and The Wire.

  8. Brainstorm was Natalie Wood's last movie. In fact, I think she died before it was finished.

    I really love this film.

You should also check out George A. Romero's Martin. I think it's one of the better vampire films ever made.

In my opinion, just about any film by Terry Gilliam will fit your criteria: Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Time Bandits, Brazil, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, 12 Monkeys.
