Must-have iPad apps

Discussion in 'Tilted Gear' started by Craven Morehead, Oct 20, 2011.

  1. On sale for a limited time for $.99, Animoog. A Moog for your iPad. Will be $29.99 when sale ends.

No idea what I am doing but it is cool as hell.

I use Notes Plus for taking notes in classes. It works pretty well, though since its last update it slows down annoyingly if you switch out of it and switch back.

Pulse is pretty sweet too, though I haven't used it all that much.

I don't have an iPad, and I'm totally fine with that... except that it means I can't use Flipboard. It's a great app, and I can't wait for them to come out with their Android version or for a worthy competitor to emerge.

The 7th Guest is currently on sale from $6.99 down to $1.99. It's an awesome mystery/puzzle/horror game that was on the PC in the early '90s and it's a direct port to the iPad with no compromises or "improvements." I waited until payday to buy it at full price, and for 2 bucks it's more than worth it.
I love Animoog. I'm not really supposed to have personal stuff on my work iPad, but at this rate I'll get one for myself soon enough and want the apps ready to go.

  8. Animoog is a massive time waster. Must use with headphones/earbuds.

For anyone who does construction, engineering, DIY around the house, or otherwise could use a hand determining the load and torque on things, Autodesk ForceEffect is free and does what you'd expect from a much more expensive program. App Store - Autodesk ForceEffect

Want to spot stuff in orbit? Space Junk amateur is free and overlays visible passes of various objects onto the camera's view. It shows everything potentially visible from big stuff like the ISS and Tiangong 1 to upper stages of rockets launched decades ago. There's also a pro version if you like it for $5. space junk amateur for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation) and iPad on the iTunes App Store

Autodesk have released a whole suite of 3D modeling apps for iPad that are Free.

123D Design is a classic 3d modeling program that lets you start with pre-made models or primitives and manipulate them in the usual ways.
123D Sculpt is a ... modeling clay simulator, for lack of a better description. Also comes with premade models.
123D Catch allows you to use your iDevice's camera to take 30-40 pictures of an object from various angles and upload them to Autodesk's server, which will process them into a 3D model. Takes some getting used to, but would be incredible at $50, nevermind free

They also released Pixlromatic, which is like Instagram if it were made by engineers instead of hipsters, and TinkerBox, which is a modern Rube Goldberg machine game in the spirit of The Incredible Machine.

The poetry app by the Poetry Foundation is really cool.

It "spins" themes for you, lands on two, and then spits out poems with those themes.

For example, under "humor" and "youth" are 20 poems.

You can also manually set the two themes yourself.

    Check it out.

POETRY from The Poetry Foundation for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store

I have it on my iPhone though, so it's sometimes necessary to reduce the text size to avoid the forced line breaks that aren't meant to be there. The one good thing about that though is that the Poetry Foundation at least had the sense to make the app indent any forced breaks to indicate that they are a part of the previous line.

Well done, Poetry Foundation. Well done.

    But wait! There's more!

You can also browse by mood, subject, and poet. And also some audio. Wait.... Did I just say "browse by mood"?

Why, yes I did. You can browse poems by such moods as frustration, blame, insecurity, gratitude, and nostalgia.

    Neat, eh?

Heehee, I used their website as a "resource" for an Internet for Educators class I took this last summer. I'll probably be revisiting their site frequently spring as my action research centers around a daily writing task, and asking kids to write about their gut reactions to poems is one of my favorite prompts.

Also, the app is apparently available for Android as well.
