Hubby brought home a Nintendo Switch today. He is currently playing Zelda with our daughter.

    Are you jealous?

What are your favorite Nintendo systems and games?

I'm not jealous but I'm still thinking hey, cool for you guys! My son is a lifelong gamer who today mentioned the latest Nintendo system release and his intentions about buying both it and the Zelda game. Pretty exciting stuff. Even as a non-gamer I can appreciate this as it's ingrained in our culture.

I'm in the opposite direction. I just got the NES mini and am reliving my childhood.

I'm a bit jealous. The reviews of this game suggest that it's one of the top games ever made, and that it's certainly the best Zelda game since 1998's Ocarina of Time.

I'm interested to see what developers come up with for this system.

I was never really a Nintendo guy. I started with Atari 2600, then moved on to Commodore 64 for a long while. I had a brief stint with a Sega Genesis and then a PS2 before retuning to computer gaming for years.

I eventually got a PS3 after realizing I couldn't keep up with the hardware requirements of PC gaming. I had a Nintendo Wii for a while at the same time, but I didn't really get into it.

My main gaming console is now PS4, and I see no reason to switch (see what I did there?) anytime soon. I already have too many games to play, and this system will be solid for a while yet.

I thought really hard about getting a Switch, but I decided to pass on the launch.

Magpie has been a lifelong Nintendo fan. From the NES up through the latest consoles she's always had to have them. It was a real pleasure for me a couple of years ago to pre-order a Wii U for her so we'd have it on launch day. It was pretty exciting to me too, since I'd never been financially stable enough to buy a console as soon as it came out before. The excitement didn't last, though; there just weren't very many games available at launch, and it took Nintendo over a year to get things moving. The game library for the Wii U is actually pretty good now, and includes Splatoon which is honestly one of my favourite games anywhere, but it took so long and was so disappointing I basically swore off the idea of pre-ordering or buying consoles at launch entirely after that. I'd rather wait and see how other people fair with them now, and pick one up after the first wave is over and real impressions are out.

Breath of the Wild does look pretty great, but it's on Wii U anyway so not really that big of a deal to me. I thought about holding out to get it with the Switch instead of the Wii U but I looked at some comparison videos and honestly had a hard time telling the difference, so I'm not sure if it's worth it.

I will get a Switch, and probably sooner rather than later, but I'd much rather wait out the initial hype and see how the console really shakes out after a few weeks or months of use. I have plenty of other video games to play in my limited free time anyway so I don't really feel like I'm missing out. Zelda will still be there in the summer or whenever I get around to it.

All of that said, I really hope the Switch does well. The Wii U flopped pretty hard and I really don't want to think that Nintendo would exit the console market, but how many failures can they sustain before it becomes inevitable? A world without Nintendo consoles sounds like a less happy place to me. They're not the most technically advanced but they make up for it on innovation and on not being afraid to be colourful and maybe just a bit childish. I feel like video games should be a bit childish, and I think the other console makers with their focus on mega graphics and super realism sometimes forget that.

If you haven't added Horizon: Zero Dawn to that list, you need to asap.

I honestly would rather have a SNES or old Sega system than the new Switch. The newer games are too cartoony and button-pushy. I loved Mario 3 and Sonic 2 and nothing much afterwards... Hubs laughs at me.

Are you saying they should repackage the SNES like they did the NES?

I would be, if not for the fact that my daughter and I are busy playing Warlords on the Atari 2600:

(NOT a Photoshop; that's also an actual Commodore 64 monitor we're using; newer TV sets don't synch up properly to these old systems.)

Mom: Turn that game off, NOW! Wash your hands, and come have dinner.
    Daughter: OK, mom.

The moment I got my NES was one of the happiest moments in my life so far. Favs are Super Mario Bros 2, Zelda, Rockman (all the kids on the block called it Megaman) and Contra.

    Super Nintendo was great.

Nintendo 64 I bought myself. Owning something felt good. 3D was a major thing about the product of course and I wanted value, but buying something from your own money felt like I was someone.

Later on I mostly played things on my computer. That was where multiplayer aspects came in.

Wow. Yesterday I started watching a walkthrough of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. I had plans to go see a hockey game, but I spent the whole day just watching. Going to continue now aswell.

It's a succesful revolution against the linear gameplay of many Zelda games before and I dare say that by far it's the best game ever made in the franchise. 10/10 wouldn't cover it. Absolute masterpiece. If they can manage to revitalise the rest of their major titles aswell I'm going to get my hands on a Nintendo Switch. I don't need any kids to make me excused.
