Slavery in America - is it really happening?

Discussion in 'General Discussions' started by chinese crested, Oct 27, 2011.

  1. This made me chuckle, but what is it is decided that animals must by law have their needs met and be well cared for in safety, that they must not be overworked - how would you draw up guides/rules, and how would you enforce it? Whalers are best out of the ocean, and these whales are best back in it I think.

PETA Files Whale Slavery Lawsuit Against SeaWorld

PETA has filed a lawsuit charging SeaWorld with violating the 13th Amendment by enslaving killer whales. This could be interesting.

The suit, which PETA says it will file Wednesday in U.S. District Court in San Diego, hinges on the fact that the 13th Amendment, while prohibiting slavery and involuntary servitude, does not specify that only humans can be victims.

Jeff Kerr, PETA's general counsel, says his five-member legal team - which spent 18 months preparing the case - believes it's the first federal court suit seeking constitutional rights for members of an animal species.

The scorn heaped upon this lawsuit in the court of public opinion will be roughly equal to the scorn once heaped upon the ideas of abolition and female suffrage. Somebody please have Jay Leno read some Peter Singer before he starts to discuss this news.

Yes because Sea World doesn't do anything like promoting taking care of endangered species or funding and creating research to help animals or anything.

    /facepalm repeated.

They have big pockets too. Why would you pick SeaWorld, that has vets on staff, feeds all of the animals well, and takes care of their health?

Sigh. Sometimes, I think PETA members just sit around and think up ways to make vegetarians look batshit crazy.

I mean, really. Sea World? Over $8 million dollars in conservation efforts, not to mention education. Gah.

And PETA continues it's uncontrolled slide into farcical extremist irrelevance. I can't even pretend to be surprised.

    Nothing to see here.

This is merely PETA doing controversial publicity.

    It's kinda what they do.

But why? There are real issues they could be dealing with.

Imagine them carrying around signs with screenshots from Earthlings on it at a protest... (It is a good horror movie to watch at Halloween with no special effects.)

And yes, there are big problems with sex slavery, human trafficking, and illegal immigrants being the equivalent of slave labor...

I should have mentioned sex slavery. Lots of that here in Vancouver, especially with East/South & South East Asian trafficked humans. Ugh.

Animal abuse is damn near the top of my "things I despise about humans" list.

That said, Genesis 1:26-"Then God said, 'Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.'"

    Dear PETA,

That whale gets better health care than a good number of children in the United States.

    Eat a dick.

These campaigns of PETA's, they're all about reach.

If they had simply sent a strongly worded letter to SeaWorld, I don't think this thread would exist; I don't think it would have made the news.

I just read an article about how many animals are killed and injured growing all the tasty veggies and fruits, these guys eat. Are they fighting for the rights of field mice and insects that die for their appetites? How about the animals that lose territory, thus food, because of the expansion of veggie/fruit agriculture?

I believe we should reduce the amount of animal suffering as much as we can, but I'm all for meat production, even hunting. There are trade offs with every decision, and none of them, even perhaps the suicide of our species*, will result in NO suffering. *we are soooo very evil*

  20. I am not a veggie, but do think if I am going to buy a life, a corpse of an animal, I would like to think it had a bit of a life and was treated with kindness and dignity from dam to slaughterhouse.
