This kind of show (and not referring to the nudity which looks completely in context) is one of the few reasons I wish I still had Dishnetwork/DVR and the extra HBO/STARZ. Netflix is grand but not much use for current NBA games or fresh episodes of True Blood.

I'm not sure about the new lead. The original Spartacus died last year and has been replaced. The new actor just seems to lack a bit of gravitas. I guess we'll have to see how it goes.

Otherwise, the first episode didn't disappoint - the usual amount of carnage and sex.

Last season was such bad soft core porn that it was almost uncomfortable at times.
But, in the absence of other things, we'll probably watch it.

I liked the first season Spartacus: Blood & Sand but I didn't watch it until after I watched
ensuing prequel, Gods of the Arena, introducing the gladiator 'Gannicus' (Dustin Clare) as well as featuring Doctore/Oenomaus's (Peter Mensah) poignant backstory including his wife, which drew me in more to the characters.

Certainly, there are many soap-operatic, over-the-top moments in Spartacus but is that not reflective of those times in Rome--the excesses be they blood or sex? (Note I'm not saying it's historically accurate--it is after all a dramatization.) I'm pretty weak in my history having not even known that Spartacus is based on the The Spartacus War so the side benefit of this show's existence is that some people will be prompted to find out more about the real Spartacus
like for example, he dies in his quest
    .

I don't feel any guilt in the pleasure I take in watching Spartacus. It's entertaining. It's a fun hour and I have the hots for Lucy. :D

So it's HBO's Rome Gone Wild? Show got rave reviews from my coworkers. Now I know why everybody liked it.

In comparison with Rome - Spartacus has a lot more blood splattering (like the movie 300) and is probably less "realistic" in that respect. This is certainly more "leave reality at the door and enjoy it", though.

But really, pretty girls and buff guys getting there gear off - what's not to like about this?

edit - plus you can say you are watching it "for the story" :)

I so agree! Some of the costuming, too.
This genre never was my cup of tea before, either.
But nowadays I watch a number of shows I'd not ever considered before watching in the 5 decades I've consumed television. Perhaps because I live with three adult males.

My best almost not-watched show was The Sopranos. I was so busy with 'life;' I watched nearly no TV. I hadn't even seen/heard a commerical for it until it started getting major mainstream press. Previously I'd only read of the show and literally, thought The Sopranos was about singers. And I'm not particularly fond of sopranos. I mean, we need them to balance things out with the rest of us but..some are a tad high-strung so I had zero interest in The Sopranos until. midway through season 1./end thread-jack.

Never have seen Rome, The Sopranos, or this Spartacus show. Not much of surprise that I have never even heard of it until today as my "current tv" connection to even basic network channels has been gone for some time.

I saw the first episode of the prequel series, Gods of the Arena. I'm not sure if it was very representative or anything. I had mixed reactions. The violence is a bit over the top. I often like stylized violence, but what I saw was kind of "meh."

I'd be willing to give it a try again, though I'm not sure where to start.

I kinda really want to see this, mostly because of Lucy Lawless.

Holy shit. Is it just me or is she like way hotter than she was 10 or 15 years ago when she was doing Xena?

It could be just me. I have a thing for women in their forties.

I don't watch to much TV. I didn't know who the Sopranos were until I saw a commerical with Hillary Clinton when she was running for President.

I like Lucy Lawless, there is something about her that is intriguing!

Wife loves the whole series, but as I said in the other thread, I just can't get over the horrible editing and fx work to properly enjoy it. Then again, it's rare that I can watch anything without critiquing it in that sense. My wife refuses to go to the movies with me anymore because of this reason. cynthetiq can sympathize, as his wife does the same thing.

As far as the new lead goes, after one episode, I'd say he better have improved in subsequent episodes or it's going to go bankrupt in the ratings. With Andy, I at least got a sense of the emotion that was to be portrayed, but with this guy, it feels like I'm watching a dress rehearsal with an actor just reciting lines for memory. Time will tell I suppose.

and yeah, Gannicus was wayyyy cooler. Arrogant, drunk, brutal and somehow classy that's a win. For character development, Andy was a perfect fit, but I'm interested in seeing how far down Oneomaus goes and that's really about it. I hate that Varro's wife was killed off so quickly. That would have been a great second or third character development. Starz.. you're hit or miss and I'm predicting a miss.

So if I have this correct this series gives you plenty of skin, action, and violence set in the ever popular ancient world setting with at least enough historical continuity to make it viewable but not enough to please the strict historians who probably are not the intended audience in any event.
That Rome series sounded intriguing, will have to check that out one of these days.

No, not just you in re: the superhotness of Lucy Lawless. I only vaguely knew of her in Xena and then only when mainstream news picked up on its lesbian demographic. Then Battlestar Galactica and all the iterations of STARZ' Spartacus, the first one, Spartacus: Blood & Sand, the prequel (6 episodes) Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, and this one, Spartacus: Vengeance, that debuted last week. In re: picking up the show for the first time now? I would skip Blood and Sand and begin with this; if you can stomach it (intellectually-speaking) go back and watch the season one, then optionally, Gods of the Arena.

I think she's simply really hot. Lawless makes a great interviewee, too. Bright, funny and a Kiwi.
    I'm stalking her. :D And I'm a straight female.

Time for a few snaps of her, making this thread NSFW!

I haven't seen Rome yet but it was critically acclaimed. I'm hard to convince to watch this type of genre but it looks to be worth a look.

I'm watching Spartacus only after doing a complete 180 degree change-of -opinion about it, from disdainfully dismissing it as a "300' film ripoff/not watching it ever, to becoming intrigued when catching glimpses of the now sadly-demised Andy Whitfield and catching on as well that Lucy Lawless has a hot, juicy role as 'Lucretia', the mistress of the now-slave-overrun House of Batiatus.

I watched the first season, it was fun. Was really sad to hear about the lead passing away.
