Summer Reading

Discussion in 'Tilted Art, Photography, Music & Literature' started by ZombieSquirrel, Jun 21, 2013.

  1. It's summer. My favorite time of year to sit outside with a good book. Since I've decided to not take classes this summer, I will need some books to read.

What does your summer library consist of? What have you read all ready? Did you like it or was it "meh" to you? Do you prefer fiction or non fiction? Kindle (or whatever) or actual paper and ink book? Do you want something mindless and fun or do you want something that challenges your noggin?

Keep track of your Summer Lovin Reading List here and share with fellow TFP bibliophiles your opinion of said books.

I started this thread because I'm always looking for suggestions for a good book to read.

I love a good mystery in the summer. For me, Tasha Alexander's Lady Emily series has the right blend of mystery, romance, intrigue, and adventure that makes summer reading fun: Amazon.com: Tasha Alexander: Books, Biography, Blog, Audiobooks, Kindle I have some of the paperbacks; others I checked out from the public library.

Similarly, M.C. Beaton's Hamish Macbeth series is light and fun--and short. They're great because they're quick to get through--usually about an afternoon's worth of reading.

I also read a lot of historical fiction during the summers. One of my goals this summer is to read the other books that have been released in Philippa Gregory's The Cousins' War series; I read The White Queen last summer and really enjoyed it.

I'll probably buy more digital copies of books this summer, as the Nexus 7 makes it ludicrously easy to buy books, but I'm also planning on getting my library card situation sorted out so I can avail myself of the public library once more. They usually have pretty good recommendations from the staffers there.

When I go to the beach, I want something totally trashy. Mindless fluff. "Chick porn" was always a good choice, with some Fabio-lookin' dude on the cover. Unfortunately, I haven't been to the beach in years, so my summer reading looks a lot like my rest-of-the-year-reading.

I have been thinking about doing a complete series reread of Sweet Valley High and/or all the Christopher Pike books. Maybe that can be my summer reading list...and I'll have a good excuse to hit up the local used bookstore!

Update: I just checked to see if there were any SVH books available in the Kindle format, and found this. Um, yeah, I am TOTALLY reading that.

I like doing the Eve Dallas series on audio. I skip through the sexy - time parts, though because it's just weird to have someone reading those to you while you're driving. J. D. Robb (Nora Roberts) is fairly entertaining. I also love the Alex Delaware novels by Johnathan Kellerman. And Patricia Cornwell's Scarpetta series.

When I travel, I can see the advantages of a Kindle or e reader, but I'm a page turner kind of girl. I lugged Atlas Shrugged across the country twice, reading it on my flights to California. I trade in paperbacks at the airports, as they have these great programs for 50% credit. I'd rather set aside room in my carry on for books than food, ha ha.

I love a good murder and/or mayhem novel. I have several other authors that I scour the library for when I'm bored. But, you should totally find Tina Fay's Bossypants. Awesome read.

Agreed on J.D. Robb and the Eve Dallas series. Those books are just fun and they definitely keep me interested.

  8. The cover freaks me out so I guess that's why I haven't read it yet.

Making my way through Inferno. Standard Dan Brown, by the numbers, but it's an entertaining beach read.

Bossypants was great. So was Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (Mindy Kaling)

I've been reading the one I mentioned above, If You Lived Here, You'd Be Perfect By Now: The Unofficial Guide to Sweet Valley High. It's actually less of a book, more of a compilation of blog entries. Which I'm kind of okay with...although there are several grammar errors/missing words that make me twitch.

I also just discovered there's a new Sweet Valley series... The Sweet Life. The twins & friends are 30. Sweet Georgia Brown, I know they will be terrible, but I have a horrible desire to read them...which I will probably be doing soon.

....well, I did say I like mindless, trashy fluff during the summer, didn't I?

I ran out of Dallas novels, so I'm looking for more Lisa Scottolini (Scottoline?), but I think I've done all those.
I picked up a few of the goofy Stephanie Plum series by Evanovich, they're totally fluff.
But I almost drowned in too much Connelly and his series on the dude who sees dead people.

I lent someone my copy of Atlas Shrugged or I'd send it to you, lol.

One of my favourite things to do in the summer is sit outside with a good book. I don't read anything heavy -- it's always something poppy or light. I think this habit came from my mother. She's not much of a swimmer (and neither am I for that matter) so when we went to the beach she'd sit out in the sun and read. She always really liked stuff like Stephen King and Dean Koontz and Sue Grafton, so I tend to stick to that kind of pop literature out of inherited habit.

Right now I'm reading Raylan by Elmore Leonard. I've always had a soft spot for Leonard's crime novels. It's definitely not a book that's going to change the world, but it's fun and a quick read. I actually just recently found out that the character Raylan Givens was made into a TV series (Justified, which is on Netflix) so I might just try it out.

I'm actually still working my way through 50 Shades of Grey.

I can only handle a few pages at a time and I can't bring myself to make jokes about it anymore.

Suppose I could concede defeat in my thread but maybe I'll get drunk and muscle my way through regurgitating it with some bad joke bile.

  15. I love love LOVE that series!!!

Sounds a lot like MY mom. We rented a cabin on a lake in Wisconsin every summer. She'd sit on the covered porch and read, read, read. Same things as your mom too. Koontz, King, Grafton and Patterson. We'd go to the local used book store together. We'd get all kinds of books and then turn them in before we left. I read a lot of R.L. Stine and Christopher Pike back then.
