Weekend trip ideas needed.

We are starting to sketch in some plans for a long weekend trip next March for our anniversary. It always helps to get through the winter if you know you have something to look forward to come spring! We have an almost 2-week trip planned for May, so we will probably keep the trip in March to 3-4 days. Our preference is to head somewhere south, but we'd like to keep it within a halfday's drive of Chicago, or a short/cheap flight.

Right now I think Memphis, TN is leading. We both love BBQ, enjoy blues, and neither of us have been there since we were kids.

Any other ideas we should consider? Tips, tricks, or info on Memphis?

Tennessee is a wonderful state, although I lean towards the great outdoors- I would recommend the Smoky Mountains. (Unfortunately it's on the opposite side of the state from Memphis, but driving from Chicago to the Smokies is a 10 hour drive.)

Come to the UK. It will be too cold for BBQ, our blues lack authenticity (but we moan a lot) and (maybe) you have never been here. With any luck, I'll be somewhere warm, or I'd buy you a warm beer to thaw you out.

Or ... Vegas is fun! Otherwise get near the sea and get some warmth, which is maybe Southern Cal or Florida? Assuming you have to stay in the USA.

This would really depend on the kind of couple you are, but I had fun over a spring break at Mammoth Cave National Park. There are some gentle guided tours that are fun or you can go on 'wild cave' tour, which is as close to 'real' caving as you can get on a guided tour. It's a bit south of Louisville, KY, so I think it meets your driving time requirements.

On our trip in May we will be spending a lot of time outdoors. We are actually pretty versatile in what we do, but I think we are looking for a city-type destination this time. :)

And Alistair, we've been to the UK twice, but never made it outside of Heathrow either time. :p Our basic range for this trip would be a state or two in any direction (preferably south) from IL. We are only planning on taking 3-4 days and want to keep travel time to a min. :)

Memphis is a great city. My cousin used to live there. Save the drive. Take Amtrak's City of New Orleans, leaves Chicago 8pm and gets into Memphis early the next morning.
Spend three days and the train leaves about 10pm, and you'll be back in Chicago in the morning.
I stayed at the Madison Hotel downtown, close to the beale Street music scene, and a great classic hotel. Don't miss the Blues City Cafe for great BBQ and live music. On Beale Street at 2nd.

You can't beat a Louisville bourbon tour!

I know you wanted south but Minneapolis is a short hop away, and there are the skyways that can get you around downtown without having to brave the elements.

  11. Throw a bottle of massage oil in your bag - just because you can. Must you take Stanley out of the bag? Should we be thinking of dog friendly breaks, or purely two legger breaks?

Negative, Ghost Rider. The drive from The Loop in Chicago to downtown Knoxville, TN is 10 hours. And I have a lead foot- and I'm taking the Skyway and paying the $13 toll. My personal best is 9:30, and that's with only stopping for gas once. Depending on where you're going in the Smokies, add another hour at a minimum - and that's assuming that you're going in through the southern entrace by Townsend. Going in via Pigeon Forge is another hour on top of THAT based purely on the run of traffic lights between I-40 through Sevierville and Pigeon Forge up to Galtinburg (Gatlinburg being my pulled-from-my-own-ass destination). If you're making the drive, though, the first Waffle House is Exit #13 in Louisville.

It's actually open again, after being closed for 25 years. There's a restaurant up there now, which is a step up from the Hardee's that was there during the World's Fair. While you're there, you can overlook the Waters of the World fountains and think of a young me stealing carp out of there in the late 80's to throw into a swimming pool.

Borla - If you're willing to drive to Memphis in March, when there's the very real possibility of ice storms, you might want to try something a little warmer. You can probably get to Vegas for under $300/each. Or even to LA and then drive to Palm Springs. Both should be warmer than Memphis. Or you could drive down to San Diego.

I actually don't mind driving. I drive almost 1000 miles/wk for work. Memphis is 500 from my house, I can do that in my sleep. Plus I'm a control freak and prefer to have the flexibility having a car would give me. Also, we've considered stopping in St. Louis (slightly out of the way, but only by about 45 miles) on the way there or back.

I've considered Louisville and Minneapolis as well, but right now the BBQ and Blues of Memphis is winning.

We are 50/50 about taking Stanley. When we go away and can't take him my parents watch him, and they spoil him rotten. Plus they have 3 Boston Terriers in their house that he loves to play with.

I'm wanting to go south more because I don't want the weather to be worse, but it doesn't necessarily have to be warm. After what is supposed to be a brutal Chicagoland winter this year, I'm thinking I can take whatever Memphis throws at me in late March. :p

You are also talking to someone who drove from Cedar Rapids to the Chicago burbs through the huge blizzard of 20"+ we had this winter on the Tuesday afternoon that it hit. I was one of the last cars to get through several spots on I-80 where they closed things down. I'm tough/manly/stupid like that when it comes to traveling in the winter. :D

Reading through this thread makes me glad I don't have to go so far for a nice weekend getaway. Wine country? Check. Beach? Check. Mountains? Check. City? Check. Heck, if I want the beach, mountains, and the city in one, Seattle is only 6 hours away and Vancouver only 8.

Here's what we're planning on sometime soon (once the root canal is paid):

I'll think of you, Borla, when I'm drinking a fine Oregon pinot noir.

One thing to keep in mind about Memphis is that like most mid size southern cities, it is completely dead on sundays. So if it is a long weekend you are talking about and you have some flexibility, driving down on thursday and leaving sunday is likely better than doing friday-monday.
Last time I was there I ended up having dinner in one of the chain fast food places because I simply could not find any of the local sit down restaurants open past 7pm on sunday.
