Specifically:

Thread Starting Guidelines

With the exception of a few specific forums, this site is centered around DISCUSSION and therefore all threads must have some conversational purpose.

If an external resource (news article, story, image, etc.) is being posted for discussion, the thread starter must quote the relevant part of the content along with their own thoughts and opinions on the topic. That is to say, you can't just post a link or a quote without adding your own words.

If you are quoting an article from elsewhere on the internet, you MUST link back to that article.

If possible, check to make sure that you're not starting a topic that is already being discussed. It is OK to rehash a topic that hasn't been covered in a while. This usually happens with breaking news. This does not apply to posts at TFP 4.0, although you're welcome to link to a discussion back there if you feel it's relevant.

Please follow up with your threads and post in them frequently. A good thread starter will tend to their replies to keep the discussion moving.

Blogs and threads are different. In practice the blog area has fewer comments and is designed for inner monologues. If you are trying to generate conversation, it is best to create a thread. Conversely, if you are ranting or otherwise not stimulating conversation, blogs are the proper place.
