Who writes better sex scenes?

The Guardian has a quiz, here: Quiz: were these sex scenes written by a man or a woman? | Books | guardian.co.uk

Take it and share what you think: do women or men write better sex scenes? Do you think there is a measurable gender difference at all?

I think it depends on what you're looking for. Personally, I didn't think any of the scenes in the quiz were all that great. They certainly didn't give me that twinge that some erotica does. I should note that I read and write erotica, and so I spend a lot of time thinking about word choice, detail, etc. when it comes to a situation such as this. Generally, I'd say women write softer scenes. The word choice is different. I think part of this is due to buying into the romance novel ideal of what a sex scene should be like. It's sometimes hard to get past that.

They did, however, include a classic from Jean Auel. She knows how to write a good sex scene, but the bit they included was so short, I didn't get a twinge. They also included a bit from Kathy Lette, and she is the kind of writer that would throw anyone off--her language is generally crude and straightforward. That isn't a complaint, by the way--I think she's great, because she does turn what we think about women writing about sex on its head.

I think that this article was someone's attempt at trying to write something that would be re-posted and blogged about a lot because it's about sex and the different sexes approach to sex.

I'm mildly annoyed by it as a journalist, sociology grad, literary writer, and adult screenwriter.

...This post makes me sound more bitchy than I am. You'll have to forgive me: it's 9AM and I'm sitting in a radiation clinic with my mother for emotional support.

I got 5 out of 10 right, I tend to veer towards female writers of erotica by choice, I have read a few male writers books, and one from a man's POV of romance but I didn't gel with it. I also prefer softer erotica and one harsh word can crash a scene completely for me.
Also the scenes have to believable, we have all had marathon sex sessions in our lifetimes, but some erotica borders on the insane and painful. I am amazed that some of these women can walk the next day let alone go to work, do normal routine things.
I would be in a bath of Epsom salts whining about swollen parts yet they seem to hop back on without a wince.

And not one of those scenes were very erotic IMHO.
Some of them looked like they had been written by a thirteen year old prepubescent boy with a dictionary while watching a 70's porn flick.

I have to tell ya, I didn't take the quiz and I'm thinking along the same lines as you Poetry. Unexperienced writer per sa.

I'm reading a book written by a male friend, it is not published yet and is nothing like the quiz questions.
His writing is excellent, sexy, sensual and very creative. I think there is a balance of male and female writers in the erotic writing field.
Plus I would think it depends on what your taste for sex is.

I don't know who Martin Amis is nor do I care if he is correct in his observations. It isn't even an article and there certainly are far better quizzes out there. The excerpts are terribly written and incredibly limited, I couldn't be bothered to vote. May as well have been a quiz on "Do dudes or chicks makes a better sammich?" Yeah, I am equally annoyed. I expected more from it when I opened it up. Sorry to be so negative.

Some of the writers whose excerpts were included are very well known, and there is a blend of popular/literary fiction authors included. So I find it funny to see who thinks these excerpts are poorly written, as some of these authors are famous for their craft.

I think in this case that perhaps they are victims of trying too hard.

I scored 8 out of 10. But I prefer the writer, not the sex thereof. I have read some wonderfully exciting, erotic works by men, and some by women. I've read LOTS of bad stuff by both. I think the ability to make the scene realistic and to engage the reader in it is paramount. As for women taking a "softer" approach... it's a fair generalisation, but far from universal. In general, I'm more interested the people involved than in the bodily parts used.

I think you maybe right Snowy and little bits of writing of an author isn't really enough to make a critical judgment.

It is a type of fun article I believe, its to pull a readers interest into a certain thought process. I didn't see what the end result will be once they collect the data from the quiz.
