    Windows 8 Release Preview

here it is! looks like it's very similar to windows 7 but has features for tables and touchy laptops. i'll probably wait to deal with this as i type and am happy with windows 7, but you guys might like it.

    thoughts?

As you know, I'm still stuck on Vista.

I won't likely be touching a newer Windows OS until I get one preloaded on new hardware.

That said, I'm always interested to see what new OS Microsoft dishes up. They're hit and miss, though I really do hope they hit. I'm not sure what to think of this new one. It seems like a bold move. They don't want to become like RIM, but they also don't want to alienate anyone with going too far too fast.

I'll look forward to seeing what industry pros say, and then seeing the consumer response. As always, it's probably best to wait for the kinks to be worked out before jumping on a new Microsoft OS.

I am happy with 7, but my husband gets new OSs for free, so we will probably upgrade on our hardware that can handle it, and save our 7 licenses for other stuff. We have a lot of computers...

    masochist!

Vista is horrific, 7 is millions times better.

I have little interest in 8.

Corporates are still on XP and some like ours is just getting to 7.

 Why do I hate myself? :(

But seriously: Windows 7's upgrade version sells for $130. Is it really worth it?

Any purchase above $20 or $30 dollars that I can't eat or wear is a luxury to me.

this windows 8 is free to try till at least january apparently and at that point windows 7 might be even less if you want to juggle. it's a p.i.t.a to re-install though especially as a gamer, so i'd understand not wanting to either.

I tried the Windows 8 developer preview and came away thinking it was a few gestures and shortcuts away from being great. My coworkers were whining about how terrible it is and that it needed a classic mode, but I say it's about damn time to cut the cord and stop giving everyone a "make it look exactly like it did 15 years ago" option.

I still don't see what the problem with Vista was aside from a whole lot of nerd rage.

Most of the difference between Windows 7 and Windows 8 is technical and mostly not visible to the user. I gave the Windows 8 developer preview a go but gave up and removed it again. The main reason was I didn't have time nor resources to dive in an really try it.
My first impression was if you don't have a touchscreen then it doesn't offer much over Windows 7.

MSD : The problems I have with Vista are compatibility and use of resources. On the same hardware Windows 7 is faster than Vista and I have heard claims of it being faster than XP sp3 but can't confirm.

There is an other thread in the Tilted Gears forum on Windows 8 Windows 8 Beta | The TFP
