The exaggerations of Paul Ryan

I honestly don't know if this is a sports thread or a politics thread. A bit of both, perhaps.

Earlier in the week, Paul Ryan said that he ran a marathon in under 3 hours. I heard about it from running friends very soon thereafter. As someone who's run a marathon in 3:00:07, I was impressed. Now this:

Paul Ryan exaggerates his marathon-running prowess - chicagotribune.com
Before I was just mildly amused by Ryan - he seems more cartoonish to me than a real politician. Kind of like one of the Little Rascals pretending to be a politician, only with actual power. But this seriously irritates me. I've told people that I never exaggerate one thing - my running times. They are set in stone, and they are as much of me as the scars on my body. For a politician to tell this kind of lie - one that's easily discovered by anyone with the time to look at results - I don't know that they're believable about anything else. At this point, I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't believe Ryan when he tells me what the weather is like outside.

I know I'm over-reacting, but does this seem like a big deal to anyone else?

If Kim Jung-Il can shoot 11 holes-in-one in his first time playing golf, Ryan can certainly run a sub 3 hour marathon.

it's really making a mountain out of a mole hill i think. i am more concerned about political lies. like saying he will do this or that before getting elected then flip flopping once in power. of course it doesn't really matter what he says because the vp position is kind of a joke anyway.

i forgot about kim jung-il doing that, haha good stuff.

I dunno. I still find it entirely plausible.

I mean, Paul Ryan is the embodiment of the Randian hero. He's a real-life John Galt.

This is not a big deal. I've exaggerated many things to impress people. There have even been times that I exaggerated too far and got caught. It's a social flaw at best.

I get it. He lied about something that some people take very seriously. In reality he told a white lie that has no actual effect on anyone else. This is just jabbing.

I don't understand why the people who oppose Ryan need this trivial jab. There are plenty of things that make this guy unsavory as an option for vice president. There are big things he has already lied about.

Bashing bills that he voted for does have a misleading effect on voters and does give a glimpse into how he would handle himself in office. Let's focus on things like that...

My thread (Paul Ryan's Legitimacy (In Regards to the RNC Speech) | The TFP) had similar thoughts about Ryan's credibility. I don't really need to repeat myself, but it makes it really difficult for me to trust him. Given that I don't really like the platform as it is, it makes me not want to vote for a guy like him, which makes me not want to vote for his superior, Romney.

Guess it isn't really surprising that this Patrick Bateman wannabe is full of shit. Somethings tells me he only does 500 crunches before breakfast instead of 1000. Claiming to run a sub-3 marathon when you ran a 4 is like claiming to be an Airborne Ranger in Vietnam when you were a fucking line cook at Fort Benning in 1969. Unlike Punk.of.Ages, I don't think it's something you just let go... not when you're making shit up to make yourself seem superhuman and as a potential leader. I ran the perpetual mountain at camp in x:xx and I'll take that number to my grave. It wasn't anything special but it was mine and I beat a lot of other high speed fuckers that day. Even if you're lying to someone that doesn't give a shit or lying about something that nobody will check... you're that much less of a man if you can sleep soundly at night slinging those kind of falsehoods to the world.

So here's to Ryan and his 8" dick... all six inches of it.

I'm with the_jazz on this one.

MKOLLER, I wasn't sure if this fit into your thread. If you think it does, let me know and I'll merge the two.

Plan9, I think it's more like saying you were a highly decorated Navy frogman (read between those lines for what's really being said) in 1965 in Southeast Asia when you actually did 2 years at the Winnetka base fetching coffee in 1976. And by 6", I assume you mean around. Ryan's got to be like a tuna can - short and wide.

In my world - albeit an amazingly flawed and fucked up one - this is the biggest lie you can tell. I would sooner confess to my wife that I'm fucking around than lie about one of my times. Punk.of.Ages, I don't see this as trivial. I'm the first to admit that it is not something that should be on the forefront of everyone's mind, but in mine it's a big fucking deal. It's like the scene in Animal House when Pinto is trying to decide whether or not to fuck the passed out mayor's daughter - he could, but the angel wins out. Ryan listened to the devil - which in the movie makes him a homo.

    Right, Xerxes?

I must be missing something, then...

To me, the amount of time a man can run however many miles in and whether or not he exaggerates about it has absolutely nothing to do with how well he can help lead the country.

It's just such a non-issue to me, especially in comparison to all the bullshit coming out of this dude's mouth that actually does have to do with his platform and plans for leading the country.

  11. it raises questions about his credibility nonetheless.

If i lied about my times, no one would give a shit because im a nobody(except me). But when you're trusted by the people to lead them and you're really just a bunch of fibs, in the form of a politician, who's to say you're not going to lie about something else much bigger. Lying about something and being proven that its wrong, will finally erode the peoples confidence in their leaders.

We all know what happened to the politician than didnt have sex with that woman, monica lewinski. He got caught out, and although i think he was a popular president, he'll always be remembered for one thing.

I think he's the worst thing Mitt could have picked to run with. Palin would have a better chance.

sooner or later, folk will figure out what i mean when i say conservatism is reality-optional.

and dear leader not only managed 11 holes in one. he also piloted the north korean football team to its best world cup showing. and he inspired the greatest website ever:

I understand what it shows as far as his credibility, but he's already lying about much bigger things.

Like I said, I must just be missing something here because regardless of the fact that he's a politician, I just don't see exaggerating a marathon time as a big deal and clearly other people here do.

This is the shit we need to worry about because it actually translates into outcomes.

How many Americans will take such misleading figures to Election Day?

You can't tell me that Ryan is new to this stuff and he simply doesn't know what he's doing.

The propaganda is strong in this one.

Paul Ryan's marathon stats are only of interest to me if he can manage to run into the Atlantic Ocean and keep running until Mitt takes a stand on something.
