Technically I'm closer to "older" than "younger" these days and I don't have any "heft" because I got in shape. Older men with heft are over weight.

When you get older you maybe more prone to overlook/not care about the superficial as much, but its still there. Oddly divorce seems to get men closer to manikin shape again, older or otherwise.

I don't think it's sad at all. Having done countless interviews, I can say that how you present yourself is everything. In a first round of interviews, nobody has time to get beneath the surface. A first round is just, personal hygiene, can they answer basic questions, and does their resume appear to match them?

Showing up nicely dressed, giving a firm handshake, sitting up and looking the interviewer in the eyes may be basic stuff, but it matters if you want to get interview number 2.

Actually in this case, I meant it was sad that a professional counselor was so quick to stereotype me.
I do understand how interviews work, I've hired a lot of people over the years.
I said the same words to him I had said before but now that I was wearing a suit he was willing to take me seriously.

Just a random addition to this thread: I wasn't in the market for any new footwear, but saw a pair of boots that didn't look bad, but...

...they're so cheap, I can't see them lasting for any appreciable length of time.

In the late 90's, I had a single pair of shoes, and they were sneakers. Generally, I paid about $75+ for a pair, and made them last a year. One time though, I found a pair that only cost $40 and they promptly fell apart after a week. (Since these were my only shoes, it was an amusing sight to see me walk into a shoe store with my current footwear practically disintegrating with every step.)

It was this experience that taught me to not worry about paying a little more for something.

(If those boots cost about $100, would I buy them? At the very least, I'd feel more confident about doing so.)
