Most of the big name free agency (FA) signings are done, and the draft is approaching. What does this mean?

It's time for a new NFL thread!

    ------------------------------------

I'll start it off with my home team, the Texans.

The only major thing the Texans did in FA was bring in a defensive back. Which was a good move...but...they didn't manage to sign (or even seriously pursue???) an offensive lineman. Not good.

CJ Fiedorowicz very wisely retired. He suffered a couple of concussions last season, one of which kept him out for a few weeks. I don't know if his retirement caught the Texans off guard or not. IMO they should've been looking for his replacement after the serious concussion.

Cushing was cut (and retired). No surprise. He was getting injury prone, and without PEDs to speed his recovery time he was expendable. His second positive PED test, age, & injury history pretty much guaranteed his departure from the NFL.

    ------------------------------------

Some teams were very active in free agency. That doesn't necessarily mean the team will gel and live up to expectations. If it works for the Rams, they will be the new Kick Your Ass team in the NFL (yes, I'm pretty much repeating what has been widely reported). We'll see if Wade Phillips can recreate what he did with the Broncos (their defense made the PO and won the SB, not Peyton Manning and the offense).

    I'll keep talking to myself.

The dallas cowgirls . They weren't very active in FA signings, trades, etc. because of salary cap issues. If they remain healthy, Dak returns to form (which as the fluke, his amazing rookie season, or his sophomore slump?), and Elliot stays out of trouble, they might just again be a serious contender. Yes, it pains me to admit that.

Case Keenum :). Will he prove to be a worthy starting QB, or was his success with the Vikings a fluke? I don't know enough about the Broncos to comment on what the team is like overall, but I'm pulling for Case. Case will make big $$$ under his current contract. If he isn't successful, in the sense that he plays well but not great--doesn't totally crash & burn--he'll be able to make good $$ as a reliable back-up.

Little johnny manziel . Dear sports media: Enough already !! Quit reporting on him wanting to return to the NFL, wait until he does something worth reporting. Even the CFL commissioner has doubts about him.

    -----------------------------------

What your thoughts about your favorite team(s)?

Will Mayfield give the Browns the spark they've been needing, or will he be a bust? I'm guessing both. He'll be exciting to watch, but will make plenty of mistakes. Long term? We'll see.

Buffalo Bills and Josh Allen. Allen wasn't spectacular in college against relatively weak competition.

I'm a Steelers fan and I think they did well in the draft and in free agency despite what some so called experts say.

    Bills fan.
It was exciting to see Allen in the Bills uniform, talking with Jim Kelly.
I can't help but be optimistic.
I have low expectations for this year but I'm getting excited about the next few years after.

I don't get them picking Allen. Maybe he showed something special in the workouts that he didn't show in college.

Mason Rudolph could be the QB sleeper of the draft. If Big Ben stays healthy for the next few years--and obviously decides to play--Rudolph could benefit from the seasoning. Unlike some of the other QBs who might be asked to step up too soon.

The Texans have been criticized, rightfully so IMO, for not doing enough to improve offensive line. I think they're going to sign some solid veterans once other teams make further cuts during training camp and the preseason. They can concentrate on long-term players in the 2019 draft.

Just today, saw this thread. Thank you @Chris Noyb for starting it.
This year it would be GREAT if more TFPers were involved with the Yahoo season competition. Mr @Borla has and I hope will be the comish again.
As for a team of my own, I have non.
But I enjoy rooting for the underdogs, that said, this year again, I will pick my Dads team. Dallas. The Cowgirls as My Houstonian friend prefers to call them. Im not up yet on staff and draft, whom is free or got cut. But I do very well if I don't mind patting my own back.

So Eli Manning receives no punishment from the NFL, despite the existence of a text message where he clearly asks for helmets that could "pass" for game worn.

Nice double standard, Mr. Goodall. Suspend some players over allegations of wrong doing, let others slide where the wrong doing seems clear.

This coming from someone who likes Eli Manning (or used to).

    Texans....vs Patriots

A tale of two half's. The sloppy offense didn't surprise me, but the lousy defense did. Nice recovery relatively speaking in the 2nd half, esp the defense, they didn't let the Patriots turn it into a massacre. I'll take it as a respectable loss.

Cowgirls. Eight whopping points. I sincerely hope this is indicative how their season will go.

Bills. Embarrassing, totally embarrassing. Josh Allen could be in for some OTJT.

Broncos. Keenum got the W, but three picks?

    Bengals. They won. Shocking.

Steelers. They couldn't handle the Browns. I'm thinking the Browns played above themselves while the Steelers played down.

Buccaneers. Fitz had a career best game. Does anybody think he can keep it up (say at 70%) for long?

Bears fans are stunned. When I switched the TV over at 9:05 and saw the score, I just left the game on for the heck of it.

Von Miller, three sacks, two forced fumbles...and that's just what the box score shows.

I woke up crabby about having to go to work, because I’m on call this week.
Then I remembered I could be going to work to coach the Buffalo Bills and my situation doesn’t seem so bad.

They are in an impossible situation. They’re going to have to play Josh Allen and he will spend the season running for his life. The O line is a sieve.

They interviewed him after the game. He looked high as a kite, mellow & overly alert at the same time. I'm not flaming Rodgers personally, or the Packers, and ***I could be totally wrong***. He wouldn't be the first athlete to receive a pharmaceutical cocktail in order to get back into the game.

Yeah, so they start at .500. Better than they were last year. (A tie counts as 1/2 win, 1/2 loss, as far as winning percentage is concerned). Guess the Bucs 26 losses in a row still stands as longest in super bowl era.

The Texans have placed Kevin Johnson on IR because of his second concussion in about a month.
On a personal level, I wish him a speedy and full recovery.
On the cold NFL business level, he has never lived up to his draft position; everything I've read about KJ says he is lucky to be a starter in the NFL.

That young and talented Eric Reid is still a free agent is totally ridiculous. The Texans, and several other teams, could use him.
The entire anthem protest "movement" has been totally blown out of proportion, IMO.
Would it be better if players kept it off the field? Yes. But as long as the NFL has no specific rule(s) addressing the "issue," they're free do what they want.
Did, and would, protesting players be a disruption to the team? In a very small way, possible perhaps yes, but definitely not to the extent that has been exploited by the news media.

Dez has a serious ego & talking problem. He's also entering his twilight years, although he might have a couple of productive years left.

He was being picky, but from what I've read he's only received two contract offers.
