Women in the Military

Women should absolutely have the right to serve in the US military.

Harry Truman opened all branches of military service (limited to non-combat roles) to women in 1948.

Obama, in 2015, extended it further, by opening all combat roles to women.

Last week, a Senate Committee, in drafting the annual defense spending bill (National Defense Authorization Act- NDAA), included a provision that would require women to register with Selective Service at age 18. The basis was a lawsuit by ACLU that only requiring men to register violates federal anti-discrimination laws. The House initially had a similar provision in it's NDAA bill, but conservatives demanded it be dropped.

Fuck yes i think women can serve in the military. If they want to serve their country, their is no difference in a man or a women in the military.

The only thing that i disagree with is that you never hear of a woman general its always a man. but maybe im wrong.

 

I agree, women can serve in the military and I do agree they should have the same opportunities as the men with rankings.

One thing I hope they take into consideration if they do start force women to sign up for draft, is families. If both parents get called to serve, who will take care of the children.

 

I'm not sure why this would even be an issue for anyone. It was decided decades ago, women have served with honor for years.

I'm not a fan of the draft. We haven't drafted anyone since Viet Nam. I'd just pass on legislation that addresses drafting women until we have a need to do so.

OH, I just never hear of any women generals in the military. Its always men that you hear about. and it should not be that way.

 

As someone who unofficially "served" in a science and research capacity for the DOD, I think the military isn't ready for women to serve. I actually have more female friends who are soldiers than male ones, and they are all capable. However, the system isn't setup to protect women from other male soldiers currently. And I don't see that changing anytime soon, since it is almost impossible to change males attraction and imagination to women at that age.

I do support a draft of all medically cleared 18-23 year olds to serve in a non-combat role for 6 months (maybe 3 or 4 months if they are going to college) however. It could be any branch of the military, agency, or government organization. They will get paid, gain some experience, learn how the government works, socialize with new people, and have a purpose greater than themselves. Some organizations will have no problem finding jobs for thousands of young adults, others will have a harder time at it, but the country needs a lot of work done to move it forward.

 

I'm guessing you are referring to the serious issue of sexual assault in the military. DoD’s most recent report estimates almost 21,000 service members were sexually assaulted in 2018.

There is a bi-partisan bill, led by Sen.Kirsten Gillibrand, and surprisingly including Ted Cruz, currently working through the Senate that addresses the issue. It has strong White House support unlike the previous administration.

This would be a significant improvement, but you are certainly correct in that it wont change "males attraction..to women" at that age.

 

Ted Cruz is making a political move, jumping on the Vanessa Guillen bandwagon.

That ^ statement reads poorly. I'm all in favor of changes to how the military handles sexual harassment charges, I don't like Cruz using what happened to Vanessa Guillen for publicity and political gain.
