We used to get snail mail versions of these in my office years ago. We'd get about three or four a year. Now I get three or four a month via email.

Playing on people's greed is such an easy way to scam.

We'd get that one via e-mail and fax... my favorite one is the e-mail that your friends send around saying that Applebee's is tracking the message (so don't clean up the e-mail, just forward it as is!), and if you send it to X number of people, you'll get a gift certificate via e-mail to eat at Applebee's. I went to Applebee's website when I got this the first time, because I didn't know how they were going to track it (unless someone sent it to them), and they had a pop-up saying that this was a hoax.

I had someone try to "buy" my classified ad item by sending me a check for several thousand dollars over the amount agreed to sell. I was then to send the difference back via western union.

he fedexed the check to me and i never cashed it. he was going to call the FBI on me. I just stated that I was not going to send any funds until after the check cleared.

he never contacted me again.

Cynthetiq - a case JUST LIKE THAT was on the People's Court last week. The step-mother was suing her step-son because he had signed a check over to her that was acquired via the same situation, and she had cashed it for him with her bank account. The step-son lost, but they were both found to be stupid to have fallen for that scheme in the first place. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck....

I wish somebody would come up with a good way to get spammers. At one point, the state I lived in had a special task force and told people to send the info there. I did for a while, then they stopped responding after they had a big bust.

I think the most amazing scam on the internet isn't really a scam. If you put together a decent website (ie: Ebola Monkey), pretty women will send pictures of them naked holding up your URL on a sign.

Some of the fishing scams are funny because of their poor efforts at fearmongering. They go something like this:

"URGENT ATTENTION NEEDED - Paypal Account Fraudulent Activity

Please use the link below to access your Paypal account to investigate potential misuse of your account."

Clicking on the link creates a window that is a spot-on replica of the actual page, but the information is, of course, sent to a third party who then uses it to actually hijack your account.

Delicious irony, no?

I was scammed last year. I nearly lost 1500 dollars. I was buying an SLR Digital Camera and they wanted me to send the money via Wester Union and it was all done through an 'escrow' set up, but the next day I was just getting a little uneasy about all of it and did a research on that specific escrow site and it came up as being fradulent, so I called up Western Union and cancelled the transaction. Never got an e-mail back from the person.

I got an interesting variation on the Nigerian spam today: it was a letter from some "Reverend" who was interested in starting a church for foreigners in the US. Kind of weird because it had my first and last name in the letter itself, so that's why I took a look at it... and saw that everything was misspelled, including the word "internate" (internet). They wanted me to reply and say that I would donate funds to help establish this "church" (which also got mispelled as "churd" at one point). I deleted it very quickly, but got a very good laugh out of it in the meantime. I guess they are appealing to... spiritual greed??

While it's be nice to make 2 million dollars a week, I think i'd have to pass on that one - it's really too much effort stuffing all that money in the mattress...

I've been around the internet way too long... my favorite email is not one of scamming, but of trying to be helpful... The Good Times virus was going to be such a malicious virus and you had to forward the email to all your friends to warn them of impending doom...

To be honest I can't say that I like any of them. I have one friend (I guess you could call her a friend) who forwards chain mail like she's desperate for the good luck/love/money that they promise. I get so many every day that I'm just to the point of disgusted whenever I see one and I rarely read them.

As for the Nigerian scam bunk... I don't know why they like me but I get at least one of those a week on average. It's nauseating, especially when I think that they would not continue this if people weren't still falling for it. I can't help but think that sadly the people falling for it probably are the ones who are too stupid to earn much and so they're using money that they need or money they got through welfare to pay these scammers.

What's worse - My Dad is just getting to know the internet and he forwards practically EVERYTHING to me. At least I can monitor them receiving any nigerian scam things so they don't get sucked in. I have one junk mail box that gets over 1000 messages every couple days in the bulk mail box. I just dump it all without looking at any of it.

Probably most, but I remember reading a story a few months back about a professor, I think in his 70's, who wasn't scammed once, but twice by the same nigerian emails. For hundreds of thousands of dollars. his son ended up taking him to court to wrestle control of the family fortune from him, due to his twice being scammed. I remember reading that the second time he was being scammed he told his son, "but these are nice nigerians." He actually flew out there and met them and everything. But hundreds of thousands of dollars. And a professor? makes you wonder. I wish I remember what it was he was a professor of. Probably psychology.

Sometimes the subject lines are clever enough that I'd consider clicking on it; however, when I get 15 emails with the same title back to back, they blow it.

When I worked at the bank, I can't even begin to tell you how many times this scam was pulled off - and worked. The unfortunate thing is that we had no choice but to take the money from the person that got scammed - the check was fraudulent.

Another great Nigerian scam site: Scam-o-Rama, aka The Lads from Lagos, at:

http://www.scamorama.com/

Plenty of email transcripts from different people -- a lot of them Brits, but not all -- who have a great deal of fun twitting the con men and stringing them along, using names like "Mikhail Strogonoff," "Beldar Conehead," "Captain James T. Kirk," and more. And the scammers just don't get it. Pretty funny.

(Add: some of the money-transfer scammers are approaching people through chatrooms or IMs, and they have transcripts of some of those encounters, too.)

Some of the phising mail are pretty well done, I've recieved a few of the PayPal variety that looked really good. However, there's been a few phishing "attacks" aimed at my bank from (probably) SE Asia, and their Swedish is beyond terrible. You think you've seen some crappy English in phishing mail, but compared to how they butcher Swedish it's nothing.

And people STILL fall for it! I'm ashamed of my countrymen. :P

Who try to guilt me into sending their crap back to them
All the rest, I would guess, are some kind of a scam
That prevails in my mail in the form of spam
There's an African queen and I'm the one she'd select
'Cause she's got twenty-million dollars that she has to protect
She can't wait and would appreciate a timely answer
And all she needs is my bank number for the transfer
Sure, oh yeah, that sounds totally legit
And here's my ATM card in case you need it
I can't belive that people fall for this shit, it really sucks
That last year these cocksuckers made a hundred million bucks
Look I won a free vacation to Hawaii
All they need is my credit card number to verify
Well I'll just type that in for you right now
Right after Hell freezes, and as time will allow
True, interest rates are at an all-time low
I'm no financial genius, but one thing I know
I'm better off gettin' money from my dear old Mom
Than from sexy chick three at hotmail dot com

[chorus]
Spam spam spam spam spam spam spam spam
(gradually get louder and repeat 3 times)
Glorius spam, oh wonderful spam!

[verse 2]
These people don't know who I am and they don't
Give a damn about me they just give me spam
So you can see what to me's a major source, of my aggra-
Vation why these people think I need so much Viagra
And what's with all the offers for a penis enlarger
Some even come with a battery charger
Here's a two-for-one offer, I don't know about you
But what the hell am I supposed to do with two?
Here's another chick who wants to meet me on line
For a one-on-one chat, it's just twelve ninety-nine
She included a picture, says her name is Barbie
But for that price we could chat during dinner at Arby's
I can work from home, and I can get rich quick
I can buy some stupid herb so that I'll never get sick
And if I act quick I'll get a paper or somethin'
That'll show me how to buy meds from Canada for nothin'
It's amazing that these folks are so concerned about my health
Considering when I had a flat no one stopped to help
But I can think for myself so I'm not falling for squat
Whether they can get me free gay porn or not
[chorus]

[break, a couple quick parodies]

(sung to "Stand" by REM)
Spam in my inbox at work
Get rich quick
Think about the folks who send it
Wonder why they don't have a life
Spam in my inbox at home
Free hot porn
Think about the stuff I'm getting
Wonder who these freaks think I am

(Sung to "Slam" by Onyx)
Spam! Du-duh-duh! Duh-duh-duh!
You can work from home!
Spam! Du-duh-duh! Duh-duh-duh!
Get a low rate loan!
Spam! Du-duh-duh! Duh-duh-duh!
Take an on-line course!
Spam! Du-duh-duh! Duh-duh-duh!
See a girl and a horse!

[verse 3]
It all seemed to be the same till one day I got
A really strange one I didn't know whether to believe or not
He claimed to be a time traveler with a broken field regulator
Who needed a new dimensional warp generator
Huh, that's a new one, I didn't know what to say
'Cause I had just bought a used one that day on ebay
I might have let him have it but I know what they're worth
And he didn't have any money that was good on Earth
So I'm gonna keep it, see if I can make it work
I wanna travel to the future, visit Captain Kirk
So until he gets some money that I know I can trust
He can rot in two-thousand four like the rest of us
(chorus)

OK, let's see.
I've got a message from my mother, my cousin, Dave, and spam.
Spam, my sister, Traci, and spam.
Spam, spam, spam, Luke Ski's newsletter, and spam.
Spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, some

Spam, spam, spam, oh look somebody bought an album, and spam.
Spam, spam, spam...
(build chorus in background)
Glorius spam, oh wonderful spam!
There was also a line I heard somewhere along the lines of "Why would I want to buy my medications from someone who can't even spell them correctly?"

Quote:
"MY GOOD WILL"

Good day and God bless, Greetings to you in the name of God Almighty. I am former Mrs. Memunat Hasan Farouk, now I am Mrs. Rebecca Hasan Farouk a widow to Late Farouk Hasan Uladzimir. I am an old woman; suffering from cancer. From all indications, my condition is really deteriorating and is quite obvious that I may not live long, because the cancer stage has gotten to a very severe stage.

My late husband died in an air crash on the 31st October 1999 in an Egyptian airline Boeing 990 with other passengers on board. You can confirm this fact from the website which was aired by the BBC WORLD NEWS (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/502503.stm) and my only daughter,Janet died in BOMB ATTACK LONDON.

My late husband was very wealthy and after his death, I inherited all his business and wealth. My personal physician told me that I may not live for so long and I am so scared about this. So, I now decided to divide part of this wealth,by contributing to the well being of less privileged people and handicapped in the society of world America,
Canada, Africa, Europe and Asian Countries. This mission, will no doubt be tasking had made me to recently relocate to Europe where I live presently. I selected you for this Purpose as I was looking through My late daughters mail box on REDPERSONALS and prayed over it, I am willing to donate the sum of $7,300,000.00 Million US Dollars to you for the development of the well being of handicapped in the society and also as aids for the less privileged around your country, and i have mapped out 1,700.000.00 for your own personal use to help me for this work. Please note that, this fund is lying in a Security company.

Therefore immediate application for the transfer of the money in your name or your home. Please, do not reply me if you have the intention of using this funds for personal use, than enhancement of the comfort of the Handicapped.

Lastly, I want you/your home to be praying for me as regards my entire life and my health because I have come to find out since my spiritual birth lately that wealth acquisition
without God in one's life is vanity upon vanity. I await your reply.

Please, write back to Me via My personal email address below: mrs.memunat@yahoo.co.uk
Your are to contact Me with Your contact details and phone number.
Best regards,

MRS REBECCA HASAN ULADZIMIR.

I can confirm this. The stepdad actually quit his job when he got the Nigerian Check. He e-mailed the nigerian scammer multiple times and attempted to help him, even though my friend was warning him not to everyday. When he went to the bank after quitting his job to deposit the check, the bank contacted the FBI because they thought that he was actually trying to scam the bank (the check wasn't even printed on check paper, it was plain printer paper). At the end of the story, the family ended up jobless and out of money because they fell for a random Nigerian e-mail. I was dumbfounded when my friend told me the story.

I got this one today, and I'm considering responding just to mess with them. It's actually fairly well written and may or may not be Nigerian, but it's pretty clearly a scam, especially if you know anything about FOREX. The idea that you can't lose money should be sign enough to stay away.

Hello!
My name is Zoya Zaki and I wish to offer you an interesting way to earn some money. You have possibly heard what is a partner program. Let me tell you everything by my own words. The partner program is made by any company to attract clients, basically it will become profitable for any company not at once but in a year and longer. As a rule many large companies use such a system. Its essence consists in paying bonuses to a client that attract another clients then.
From the client's side it is a good way to earn some additional money. I am the partner of the solid UFT company. Its economic parameters are above an average level, and at the moment being this company is taking an investment action with 100% guarantees.

I already received my profit last month from my investments and recently has decided to earn additional money using the partner system. If you are interested in these offers will you please contact me by e-mail: zoyazaki0507@hotmail.com (not findutils@backstreetboysclub.com ) After that I will contact our company's manager and send you the partner link to register in our company. I have also studied the history of the company and asked managers many questions and after that on behalf of this company I have written an advertising letter to attract clients. Please read it up to the end below:

ęOur business offer is suggested for those who are willing to increase their capital whilst taking no risk.

Our company specializes in investment. Your well-being may be improved due to our assistance. The company deals with trading in the well-known stock exchange market, FOREX. Refer to our web-site to obtain further information: XXXXXXX (I shall give you a site after contact to me).

Why do we over you these favorable conditions? It is mainly because we have entered this market quite recently and we have to keep up our competitive position. Therefore we have to take most of the risks. Each investor is sure to return at least his deposit. At present the most profitable investorís position in our company has been 50% monthly profit.

Generally, companies operating in this field cannot offer safe investment. The probable losses are stipulated clearly in this highly profitable business.
Our start-up tries to involve more clients by all means. Currently our client resources are at the same level as compared to the leading trading companies. Our marketing specialist Justin Mark Messelt completed a PROJECT that is based on the involvement of a great number of clients due to the fact that we are the first company to guarantee your payment without losses. Our PROJECT lasts till January, 1, 2007. A well-developed system of extra-charge from the stabilization funds of our company profits guarantees a 100% investorís repayment. Each investor is able to follow the growth of these funds on-line. Our managers are willing to assist you in any problems arising. See their contacts on our site: XXXXXXX (I shall give you a site after contact to me).

Millions of people in our modern world are eager to improve their well-being and increase it in the shortest possible time. Thatís why according to many American millionaires money are not supposed to lie and be wasted with no purpose. Money must work and make profit. Itís money that should work for you and not otherwise. This led to formation of joint -stock company stereotypes and investment projects. No matter what view on life you possess money has always been a continuous stimulus for people. But this appears to be different with all people. Millionaires, for instance, donít consider money to be the main factor of humanity. To simple playing chesspieces in a casino, but their difference from other people that they are in advance assured of the fact that their color will drop out and they will win a game. 10 % of millionaires have earned their money at market stock exchanges of securities and Forex. At present the global currency market is the most profitable source of e arnings of money.

We shall not allow you to be disappointed in our opportunities and we shall try to make our cooperation constant and to keep you as our constant client. We wish you to make a correct choice and success in all affairs.Ľ

Best regards
Zoya Zaki

Maybe I'm strange but the pick-up line "xggoap oarcflqwcftlfrttr hkhuboux fikbydgd vvurw
xcxwdl ulqpngqhxa ddnvrgqk caqcglpf ksnqtn" strikes me as the best one ever. If I was single I'd give it a shot.

Please please stop sending me spam offering to sell me Hoodia. I don't even know what Hoodia is (and I'm not going to look it up), but every time I see the word Hoodia my brain translates it into Hoodsie, and now I want Hoodsie cups. Again.

Yum, Hoodsies.
