Flushing Nemo

From CNN.com

Flushing fish doesn't lead to sea
Flushing 'Nemo'

COSTA MESA, California (AP) -- Kids be warned: Flushing your pet fish down the drain will not send it safely into the ocean as depicted in the new computer-animated movie by Disney and Pixar "Finding Nemo."

A company that manufactures equipment used to process sewage issued a news release Thursday warning that drain pipes do lead to the ocean -- eventually -- but first the fluid goes through powerful machines that "shred solids into tiny particles."

"In truth, no one would ever find Nemo and the movie would be called 'Grinding Nemo,"' wrote the JWC Environmental company, which makes the trademarked "Muffin Monster" shredding pumps.

In the unlikely event Nemo survived the deadly machines, the company added, he would probably be killed by the chlorine disinfection.

Heh :p

Another consideration is that most fish kept as pets are freshwater, not saltwater, species...and couldn't live in the ocean anyway.

WhoaitsZ 06-08-2003 02:41 PM

they'll think their sending him out to rest in the great blue sea

What a funny article! I figured some kids might think to do this after watching the movie... heh heh. I love how the machine is called the "Muffin Monster".

Nah, just ignorant. It's fixable. That article would do it, in fact.

Great post!!

hrdwareguy 06-09-2003 05:59 AM

Does anyone remember the movie Aligator? Same principle, child buys aligator as pet...pet starts getting to big...pet gets flushed...pet lives in sewer for years...becomes largest aligator to ever terify the city.

The movies have been flushing things that survive for years and years.

DelayedReaction 06-09-2003 06:45 AM

It's a cemetary! It's a garbage disposal! It's an illusion for children to believe their pets are going to a better place!

What can the toilet NOT do?

mtsgsd 06-09-2003 06:53 AM

The funny thing to me is that the movie accurately shows that the pipes do NOT go directly to the sea, but instead go to the sewage treatment plant (with the appropriate music of dread).

Nemo escapes thru a hole in the pipe as though this was the plan the whole time. LOL

Yet another childhood dream bites the dust. Not wonder so many of them grow up to be sullen and cynical.

It's good to know that JWC Environmental crushes the hopes of young children when it's not busy producing machines to treat raw sewage.

Diversification is the key to success.
