I've really become partial to rum sours since my boyfriend introduced me to them.

1 part lemon juice
2 parts coconut rum
a packet of Splenda...or a little sugar
put it in a shaker with ice
shake well
pour into lowball (ice and all)

They are very refreshing and tasty!!
Good with lime juice, too.

Yummy, wish I had one now.

so then what do you like to drink? I mean there's lots of choices out there, but there's still things that you also don't like.

I don't like licorice so all the ones that taste like licorice are out immediately, Sambuca, Grappa, Anise...

but there's THOUSANDS of combinations to drink. You like sweet drinks? Fruity? Stiff? Dry? Wet?

Concrete Mixers, those are different.

So are Jellyfish shots.

But I wouldn't drink either of those.

Soz,

I dislike liqourish as well.

Fruity and sweet I guess would be things I like.
Recently tried a blue lagoon, and a harvey wallbanger. the blue lagoon tasted nice at the start but slowly got less delicious, where as the harvey wallbanger started off okish and ended a lot better.

Three classics:
  • Gin & Tonic
  • Martini
  • Manhattan

As with literature, you should always begin with the classics.

I concur with the Guru's list, classics all.

I also like a good gimlet as well (one part gin to one part lime cordial). Very refreshing.

Too bad you aren't into licorice as I would highly recommend Pastis. A common brand of this is Pernod. You pour a finger or two of pastis into a glass add maybe another finger of cold water and you are good to go. The water is essential, do not drink it straight.

I happen to like the taste of some tequilas, and even though this is a mixed drink I would only drink it with a decent smooth tequila. Before all the varieties of tequila showed up in my local market in recent years, I acquired a taste for Cuervo Gold, the top shelf tequilas are probably too good to mix this way; pour some into a tall glass with plenty of ice, top it off with 7up or Sprite ...about 50/50... add a slice of lemon. It's very smooth, interesting flavor with the agave, and I find it has a gentle after-effect/hangover if you have too many.

it's funny you mention the sling... a friend was in town on business last week and insisted that we go to Raffles for a sling. It was his first trip to the country.

So there we are at the famous long bar... the place where Somerset Maughn used to hang out. He orders the sling and is all in anticipation of the mixing and the delivery.

Literally, less than 5 seconds...

"There you are sir."

either they keep a mix of them in a pail under the bar or a stack of them premixed in the fridge. He was very disappointed.

especially when the bill came and it was S$25

yeah i don't like premixed. i like to see you mix in front of me, you might cheat me out of some alcohol, especially if i ask you to make it with premium labels. i've always been onto those wily cheating bartenders...

huh! By some odd coincidence I just 'created' this recipe a few days ago, while trying to come up with something new, but I didn't have a name for it. I also tried a gin-n-tonic with bitters. Both very good.

I love a good Cosmopolitan:

1 oz vodka
1/2 oz triple sec
1/2 oz Rose's® lime juice
1/2 oz cranberry juice

And for summer, I like mojitos:

3 fresh mint sprigs
2 tsp sugar
3 tbsp fresh lime juice
1 1/2 oz light rum
club soda

Lemon Drop
1/2 oz vodka
1/2 oz lemon juice (use fresh squeezed if possible)
1 sugar cube

sprinkle some sugar onto a lemon wedge, pour some 151 if you got it, and ignite.. as it dies down, down the shot and eat the warm wedge.

When it's hot outside, I like strawberry daiquiri, pina colata, and something I had once called a gum drop. I don't remember what was in the gum drop, but it was good. I remember that it was not frozen and not hot, though.

When it's cold out, I prefer coffee+irish cream+whipping cream+marachino cherry atop. I had something called a ski lift once...hot chocolate and peppermint schnapps with whipping cream. That was really good.

My favorite is a Baybreeze... cranberry and vodka with a splash of pineapple. FOr the carb/calorie conscious of us, we're doing Diet Ocean Spray Cranberry Splash, Skyy 90 and the little pinapple juice cans.

In a pint glass half filled with ice, it's about 2-3oz of Skyy, one ounce of pineapple and fill the rest with the cranberry. Yum.

Wow, this is a really enlightening list for me because I don't know much about mixed drinks at all. When I was younger, I just drank straight liquour (tequila, whiskey/rye, or vodka) sometimes I'd mix it with pop or juice. Now in my old age (muahaha, I am 24) I find that I can only usually drink beer. Goddamn I love my beer. I'd definitely like to try some of these drinks though, like with dinner or something. Great suggestions everyone

- Absolut straight is my default. It's simple, common, and I like it well enough. It's not a coktail, really, but shoot.
- Bacardi mojitos are refreshing, especially in warmer, humid climates.
- Disaronno and diet coke is okay (VERY sweet), but I try to avoid aspartame. I've been told this is a 'woman's' drink, but that sorta sounds like chauvinist bullshit.
- I've tried a Vesper, and they're pretty damn good.
- Bloody Mary's are great if I can make them myself. No carrots, plenty of fresh ground pepper, fresh lemon juice, and a decent tomato juice. V8 is okay, but for my money making tomato juice from scratch is way better. Kosher celery salt is better, too. I like Armadale more than a Goose or Absolut for a Mary.

Cocktails!: Supplemental....

I'm also quite fond of the Whiskey Sour, though, regrettably, I don't drink it often enough.

Also, I should be making many a Mint Julep (and, thanks to onesnowyowl's suggestion, Mojitos) this summer as I'm growing my own spearmint on the patio. Have you ever grown mint? Make sure you like it, it grows like a weed! (A delicious weed!)

Can anyone think of other great cocktails that call for fresh mint?

BTW, Cynthetiq, the Lemon Drop sounds delicious!

I'm a Grey Goose martini guy myself, extra dry (which means just a sniff of vermouth) - boring I know but certainly you should try it.

Speaking of trying things check out this website:

http://www.webtender.com/

A great online bartender's guide. One of the great features of this website is that you can plug in the bottles you have in your bar and it will give you a list of cocktails you can make - a great way for a novice bartender to experiment. Cheers!!

Boring?!?!?

I had my bartender trained to put a chilled 10oz vodka martini extra dry (fill shaker with ice, pour in a little vermouth, throw away ice and contents, refill with ice to chill vodka; extra extra dry would be waving the bottle over it or just turning the bottle from the rack so that the label pointed at the shaker) with a twist before I was AIS (ass in seat.)

oh... and when you ask for these drinks... don't forget to tip your bartender well.

Canadian Blended Whiskey and water is my favorite.

Crown Royal is a good one, but way too spendy for this poor boy. Crown is good straight up, but I prefer mixed with water and I have found a few that are just as good when mixed that don't cost nearly as much.

Canadian Hunter, Northern Light, and McNaughtons are all very good for my purposes.

Cheers all!
