How Do You Feel About Threads Being Hi-Jacked?
 

I like thread hijacks. I think they make things more fun when people can branch off in similar or related conversations. Bonding moments! Plus it shows that people are invested in a thread and don\'t just post and then bolt.

I generally don't mind. Personally, I don't get into many conversations IRL that stay perfectly on track either.

I think it's fun. Just like conversations in real life.

The only negative I can see is if a long thread gets bumped and the last/newest post is read, people will only respond to that as opposed to reading or recalling what the OP was discussing.

I like the more free interchange that some people call hijacking. But I'm often surprised at how touchy some people are about it, like all they want are short direct replies exactly on topic and don't include any extra words or ideas or they freak out ...strange imo.

In forums where the discussions can get technical about narrow topics (say an automotive forum) it seems to me that some people think that going off topic pollutes the data base; so if somebody is searching for something specific it makes it harder to find or it's wrapped up in a bunch of other ideas that waste time. I don't always agree with that either since a minute or two of extra reading and thought usually extract what you're looking for.

it kinda depends with me. If it's a malicious threadjack (we're discussing Ross Perot and someone comes in and randomly starts yammering about hockey) then I get annoyed. If it's just a natural conversation flow, I've no issue with it.

This reminds me of the time when I went to the grocery store and ran into my old girl friend in the parking lot. I backed up and got her again.

I miss her sometimes.

Outside of very serious discussions I don't have a problem with them. If, though, we're discussing something very serious like war, genocide, etc., it's ultimately damaging to the conversation to let it drift.

i'd like to add, however, that sometimes it's makes the thread a little [hard] to read, if you have to go through a page or two (or 3) to find where the topic starts up again - or where it last left off.

I agree too.I go on another forum where, if a thred is 'hijacked', themoderators split it or move it, or just rename it...and to some extent I know why this is doen , to make new members easier aquainted or to make the search function work better however it seems that it is a little anal. Forums are for discussions, and as said before, discussions rarely stay totaly focused.

I think a forum is for discussion between people who are hopefully literate and sane. Discussions often go places where they were not expected to go. If you don't want that, perhaps a mirror would work better.

For me, it depends on the context of the OP and the threadjack. In most (many?) cases, "threadjacks" are entertaining asides that are then put aside. For the others that derail a perfectly good thread, I find them to be a nuisance. Sometimes the derailment is a good thing if a decent conversation about the OP arises....a worthy offshoot, I suppose.

I feel the worst kind of threadjack results from an unwillingness or inability to engage in the thread despite having some interest in the OP or the subject it addresses. You sometimes have to be in the right mood for critical thinking or insight.

Threadjacks, provided they don't become a side argument that eventually slides completely off topic for a really long time, don't bother me. It's the ones that drag on into a realm that the OP never meant to go into... like "what if I got my girlfriend pregnant by sticking my finger in her" turning into a abortion or AIDS debate. Those drive me nuts and I usually just either redirect back to the OP or completely ignore the entire thread, depending on my level of annoyance.
Then again, I have ADD. I've mastered the threadjack on old threads. And sometimes I just end up looking at something from a different angle that jacks the hell out of Thread.

It annoys me quite a bit.

A few of the members here have built their entire persona upon spamming threads with lame jokes and inappropriate comments that often have nothing to do with the topic at hand.

And others enjoy each other so much that that they can't quite refrain from playful calling each other names whenever they're both logged into the forum.

But I just ignore it - I don't shape the policies around here and I can't deny the fact that most don't seem to be offended by it.

Personally I don't like hijacked threads, but sometimes they circle all the way around and get back on the original subject. I remember one thread I started that was about Bush's questionable intelligence. Well this poster named "BigJosey" announced that his girlfriend had quite a bush. Before anyone could blink, a poster named "MaxMan" asked what kind of bush it was, rose bush, hydrangea, lilac, what? The girlfriend had a azalea bush, so BigJosey divulged. This poster named "Toughboy1" then jumped into the discussion and said that azalea bushes were his favorite. Well then MaxMan said that Tougboy1 couldn't be too tough since he had a type of bush that he liked. Toughboy wasn't going to stand for that so he called MaxMan an idiot. MaxMan then stated that he was no idiot since Bush was an idiot and he had to be smarted than Bush. BigJosey then said that Bush wasn't the brightest President in the history of the United States but he wasn't an idiot.

Well, the thread then continued on with a discussion concerning Bush's intelligence. Wild, huh?

Often times thread hijacks can lead to very interesting and open conversation. It happens in typical conversation all the time, why would a forum be any different. I cannot count how many times a topic such as what did you make for dinner ends up in something completely off the wall such as pest control. At times my significant other and I will look at each other and ask, how the heck did our conversation get here anyway? It adds realism, I do not mind it one bit.

OMG, I'd forgotten all about this childhood classic. I just had to sing it.

Sometimes a threadjack deserves the Holy Hand Granade. Post #8 got the necessary justice.

Thread jacks can be circularly constructive at times..
kinda how my brain works when I am laying in bed at night trying to fall

I really don't mind them much if they are not mean spirited,

my interest in the show was ruined long before that. i think it simply ran for too long. add to that the whole "thing" between mulder and scully just got old after a while
