Age Differences

I know this topic was on the old board but now that I am back in the dating game I was curious what people think about age differences. I mean -- what do you think is to much of an age difference and how do you think age differences affect a realtionship?

My general rule: Half my age +10 years is as young as I would consider unless someone out there can provide persuasive enough evidence to do otherwise....

For me, it deals alot more with maturity. I'd go out with someone ten years younger than me, if we were close to the same maturity level. Same goes for someone older.

Any 22-year-old girl who's very wise and mature can just call me any time.

I don't worry too much about it - if it works it works.
I don't think I'd have much in common with folk of vastly differing ages.
I once dated a woman six years older than me and she was more concerned than I was. It was good while it lasted though.

As I said in 3.0, age means less and less as you get older. 5 years difference in your teens is a death sentence to 99% of relationships, while it is hardly noticable in your 30's and beyond.

It all has to do with maturity. My ex was 9.5 years old than me, but it didn't really matter (we broke up for many other reasons.)

For me it is mostly about maturity I guess. My cousin wanted to set me up with a 27 year old (I am 25) and I refused because somewhere along the line my maturity was stunted and I just didn't think it would work.

I've read research indicating that as men get older, they prefer women as mates who are increasingly younger than they are. Women's age preferences do not show the same pattern. Teenage men prefer women slightly older than themselves. Men in their thirties prefer women who are roughly five years younger. Men in in their fifties prefer women ten to tweny years younger. Women prefer men who are roughly 3 1/2 years older than themselves

It depends on the People involved and their respective ages. for instance, I am twenty one and my girlfriend is nineteen. It works well because we can relate to each other. It probably wouldn't work, or be appropriate, if she were still in high school.

I'm not in the dating scene now but I LOVE older men. I'd date any guy even 15-20 years older than me (I'm 29) and depending on the guy I wouldn't even put a limit. I'd date younger only about 7 years. 9 years younger and I'm hitting teens. I love the maturity and experience older men have. Sure makes life in bedroom more fun.

Troit, according to your formula, I can't be in a relationship with onodrim and we're only a year apart 20/2=10, 10+10=20, onodrim=19

Anyways, most everyone in here hit it right on the head though - it varies from person to person. Generally speaking though, I'd stick within a few years.

I useally don't care about age after 16 years old, I like older women because they useally have their goals and are alittle more stable, but the girl I'm with now is younger than me 2 1/2 years and I'm just getting use to it. But if it works it works.

There is a ten year age difference between me and my S.O.
I have had moments where I wondered how she could possibly be interested in an old guy like me but it has been amazing.
She has many of the same interests as I do so the age difference means very little.

I think it more important that you are both in the same stage of life than the exact number of years. I am childless and not interested in someone with kids nearing their college years, like some my age. On the other hand, I think that she would have to have been out of school a couple of years to gain some experiences and maturity.

age doesn't matter. period.

Not to play the broken record but its all about maturity. I am a 19 year old male and most males around my age seem to go after younger girls. I can not STAND girls that are younger then me. I mean 18 is about the youngest I will go. Mostly because they are just so damn immature. 19-20 is about right for me as a general rule. Although I DO know a 27 year old who I would date (and it sounds kinda bad on her but we are about the same maturity... although not to toot my own horn but I like to think I am atleast a little above average) so it all depends.

Two things to consider for me.
At university and high school there is the so called 2 year rule that everyone follows where you can't go out with anyone that studies 2 years below or above you.

Then after that i'd pretty much have a 5+ or - age difference. Anymore then that and you'll probably run into problems. Such as conversation, and different views on things such as kids blah blah becasue of the differently levels of maturity.

My general rule of thumb is that the age difference needs to be less than one-fourth the age of the younger person of the relationship. Differences greater than that mean there is less common experience on which to build a successful relationship.

As with other rules of thumb, there are exceptions. If your current relationship is one of an exception to my rule of thumb, I am truly happy for you. But I think this one would apply to most people.

That could be a problem.. considering I am a 32 year old male, who is just now entering his freshman year at college... so according to that rule, I couldnt date a junior or senior, even tho she may be 10 years younger?

Hehe, I love being a non traditional student.

As for me, I prefer someone around my own age for a steady relationship.. for that occasional romp in the hay, ideally she would be young, athletic and have big ole titties. you figure it out, cuz I never will.
