Biggest Loser Products

Anyone seen these? If you dont know what I am talking about- The Biggest Loser is a weight loss reality TV show, well known for its contestants losing over 100 lbs in about 10 weeks, which is kind of nutty. They recently came out with a bunch of at home weight loss products and i was just curious if anyone had tried them yet...

Like what? A calorie counter? A map to local walking routes? Hoodia? Treadmills? Speed? Do it yourself gastric surgery?

Tell us!

I've seen several at the grocery store, scales, indoor grills etc. No I wouldnt pay for them as the prices are inflated because they are "biggest loser" products

Daniel_ 01-22-2009 12:20 AM

They work.

They work becase by the time you've invested the money in them you feel you "can't afford to fail", and that you're "letting the show down" if you mess up.

So what you are buying is psychology.

Better spending the cash on a membership of a weight loss club and getting not head games, but peer support.

Good luck, from one who is trying hard to overcome severe, chronic, cake retention syndrome.

I find that if I spend all my money on other things, I can't afford food....ergo:

DVD's work for people who have some drive and ambition, but the biggest loser shows showcase those who don't. So, if someone is thinking about trying these products just because they work on tv, they will be sorely disappointed. Some people need peer support, while others don't. Those who do, will benefit more by going to the gym and hiring a personal trainer or finding a good consistent workout partner.

So, yeah.. I agree with Daniel. It's a marketing scheme primarily.. if it helps you out then good, but chances are, it won't. Eat good foods, portions and maintain a steady workout routine (by steady I mean frequent) and chances are you will accomplish more.

100 lbs. in 10 weeks? Is the program called "Snake Oil"?

Eat plenty of varied fruits and veggies with lean meats (and some whole grains here and there) spread across 6 or so meals a day. Eat when you're hungry, until you're full, and then stop. Couple that with at least 45 minutes of strenuous exercise a day, both aerobic and some strength training. You won't lose 100 lbs. in 10 weeks, but if you're 100 lbs. overweight you're shouldn't expect to be better in anything less than a year anyway.

100 lbs in 10 weeks isn't healthy. Everyone wants too see results the next day, but it takes discipline and hard work.

RetroGunslinger 01-24-2009 11:07 PM

I'd buy those products if it would get me a blowjob from Chloe Sevigny.

... wait, bad example.

Thank You? lol! :surprised:

Yeah i guess the prize money is a pretty big motivator as it is...

to the OP - we have a DVD of the lady trainer from Biggest Loser (Jillian) and we've been using it for about a week. I am purposefully not looking at my weight until after a month, but we do it every day and it BUSTS YOUR ASS! I would say it's a good product because it provides a good means to getting cardio in and she is convincing at making you not give up.

I beg to differ. 100 lbs in 10 weeks is perfectly healthy if you do it under supervision and do it the *right* way - working out and eating healthy. And that's just what these people do - just at a faster pace. They work out for 8 hours a day and eat extremely healthy.

I've tried this routine before and it just didn't work for me. I ate until I was full and worked out for one hour and thirty minutes every single day and I lost 3 lbs in 5 months. Then I lost 50 lbs in 6 months by eating half of what I usually ate and working out. The reason many people are overweight is because their body doesn't tell them when they are truly full. My body and mind tell me to keep eating and eating until my stomach hurts. I've struggled with it my entire life.

Glory's Sun 01-26-2009 05:28 PM

as far as eating goes.. it's all about portioning and timing. just consuming fewer calories and working out is setting you up for plateau city.. and a long one at that.

as far as working out goes.. muscle confusion, muscle confusion, muscle confusion. Enough said.

for the eating stuff look here: http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/tilted-...nutrition.html

The average person cannot lose more than 2 pounds per week without losing lean muscle in addition to fat and water weight. For the morbidly obese, it might be as high as 4-5, but 10 pounds a week through metabolism is not healthy.

I noticed that you didn't mention what your diet consisted of here. Still, you should have lost a lot more than 3 lbs. in 5 months. I'm just guessing here, but did you essentially do the same set of exercises for all 5 months?

Yes, but starving yourself means that a lot of the weight you lost was likely muscle mass.

biznatch 02-03-2009 03:44 PM

I've lost a lot of weight in the past 3 years, but I had no fat before I started losing weight. So essentially I lost a huge amount of muscle, and became very skinny.
I just started working out everyday again, mostly exercises that involve my own weight.
As far as muscle confusion, I'm confused(heh) as how to achieve it. I use the total body gym(looks somewhat like this), and I do mostly upper body stuff, and also regular pushups, leg lifts. I can't do too many pullups (around 7, although since I've broken in my muscles it might be a bit more now), so I do them on the machine, thereby not lifting my entire weight.

So should I change the amount of weight/slope? amount of repetition? If anyone can help me figure this out I'd be much appreciative.

Baraka_Guru 02-03-2009 03:51 PM

biznatch, if you're trying to gain muscle, it's not just about the working out. It's also what you eat and how much.

How much are you working out exactly? What's your routine? If you think food is an issue, have you seen the Tilted Nutrition thread yet? We can offer you much advice on exercise there too.

Yeah, most of it is water weight in the beginning.... if the contestant eats extremely lean but still manages to eat the correct amount of calories so his body doesn't go into fat storage mode than i think it would be okay... Afterall it's really unhealthy when people just try to constantly work out without enough food to burn to offset the muscle burn by burning off fat instead... if that makes any sense....

gardens 02-20-2009 01:39 AM

when I say your topic I thought oh god somebody else noticed it

then I read the OP and got confused for a second

on the show the trainers will pause and gather 2 randomly chosen contestants for candid Truman Show advert that is very very staged and kinda scares me

not that I'm a coward or anything but the whole where are my sunglasses question I ask myself disrupts my enjoyment
