(BC for rodents) Forced Abortions-Cruelty or the only Humane choice

As we all know China is defiantly not the gold standard for human rights but what about their approach to animal rights. I found this story interesting in light of the "new" video of Chinese security forces beating protesters already secure in their custody. What does it say about China that they will go so far in their attempts to keep the blood of animals off their hands.

BBC NEWS | Asia-Pacific | Chinese use pills to curb gerbils

Quote:
Chinese authorities are using contraceptive pills to cut down the number of gerbils in a north-western province plagued by the rodents.

Forestry officials are leaving pills by the gerbils' burrows to try to cut back the rodents' exploding numbers.

The gerbils, officials say, are threatening the fragile desert ecosystem in the vast Xinjiang region.

Their burrowing in the Gurbantunggut Desert damages roots of the few plants that thrive there, officials say.

Authorities are using the pellets - which prevent females getting pregnant and cause abortion in those already pregnant - disguised as bran feed, the state news agency Xinhua said.

Use of the contraceptive pills is deemed to be more humane than killing the rodents and, according to officials, have little effect on other animals.

"It's a good way to tackle the desert rat plague," local forestry official Du Yuefei said.

More than 180kg (400 lb) of the tainted feed has so far been spread across an area of about 49,000 hectares in the arid region.

Officials had previously installed hundreds of perches for the gerbils' natural predators - eagles and owls - but the move failed to halt the rodents' rising numbers.

The scheme has already caused a slight drop in gerbil numbers, Mr Du said, with 11 gerbils caught in every 100 traps laid out for them. Previously an average of 12 were caught in the traps, the AP news agency reports.

If it continues to be successful, other regions in an increasingly arid China may adopt the scheme.

My thoughts on this are that if the money is already being spent on spreading the pills around why not have them be poison and not BC. As it is the current population that is causing the problems shouldn't they do something to lower the current population before they attempt to stabilize it. I know they tried to introduce natural predator low income housing but that would only work if they had a ready supply of the predators.

What are your thoughts?

For anyone that only read the thread title, this thread is about animal cruelty, not forcing Chinese women to take BC.

It's an odd solution, for sure, but it's a lot more humane than poison. And I would imagine it would take a lot of pressure off the male gerbils to wrap it up.

They run over their citizenry with tanks on International T.V. It really does beg the question why they care about the "rights" of gerbils and don't just kill them. Perhaps they can't guarantee that other animals wouldn't eat the pills, further harming the ecosystem?

I say we get them to chill out with the tanks first, though.
