Best City in the World

what is the best city in the world?

most people seem to think that their city is the best city in the world. i know i think that my hometown city of Sydney is by far the best city to live in bar none. there are many reasons for Sydney being the best i believe. and here's why in no particular order...

- Temperate weather all year round. weather extremes are rare and do not last for more than a few days/weeks.

- Based around a stunning harboour where there are many activities that you can do year round

- Beautiful women

- Beautiful natural land and seascape

- Economically, by far the least affected of the western nations and is currently thriving in a market when most are happy to stay afloat.

- Friendly people

- Affordable - the exchange rate against the USD and the Pound always make Sydney popular

List why you think your city or any other city is the best in the world.

Why is your city the best city in the world?

- home to some of the nicest people you'll ever meet
- diverse culture with many types of people
- if you don't like the weather, just wait a couple days and you'll get a weather change
- not as hurt by the economic downturn as some other cities
- hundreds of things to do within an hour drive
- sports are big time
- best, most easy to read newspaper I've ever seen
- central time zone is the overall best time zone
- local news is worth watching, not boring and stale

I've always liked Portland. The weather is perfect (never too hot, never too cold), the people there not only seem friendly but also seem to be more content with life in general, and it is by far the best city in the US to cycle in. If I were to pull up roots and stay in the US, I'd probably move to Portland.

Then again, Montreal is pretty damned awesome, too.

Austin Texas.

Draw a line from Cali, to Texas, to Florida, To Nova Scotia, to Ottawa, to Illinois, to MN, and back to Cali. I've been to almost every city in between (missing a few here and there, but almost all).

Austin Texas is hands down the best in my opinion.

There is very little poverty, though the homeless are treated respectfully.
It's both a College town, a seat of power as the Capital, and the largest growing Tech city in the Nation.
Based on live shows per capita, it's the Live Music Capital of the World... and we celebrate the hell out of it.
The diversity is very unique. On the E-Bus (free rides from 2am-4am to prevent drunk drivers) you'll see punkers, vaqueros, preppies, hicks, and flamoyant gays... actually having good conversations and carrying on well as opposed to trying their hardest to ignore each other.
You're in the middle of the Hill Country, sorry Houston but you lose out big time here.
Decades of preservation has kept a lot of the natural beauty fully integrated into the city (Spring Fed Green Belts which you can actually swim in only 10min from downtown).
Ranks in the top 5 most athletic cities in America year after year, supported by many city hike/bike/dog trails spread throughout the land.

The only problem is, everyone who goes to UT loves it so much they never want to leave. So unless you're in the top 10% of a tech degree, you'll have a really tough time finding a good job. People love it so much I had a few Honors Grads with 4.0 GPAs take a job that paid $20k/yr just to stay in the city. Hopefully I'll get to return there one day.

I live in Austin but I would have to say that Athens, historically, is the best city in the world. It has been around for over 7000 years and is directly responsible for the creation of many of the arts, politics and sciences that make us what we are today.

+++++++++1 for austin. I live in austin suburbs and, although I came here by accident (work transfer) I don't know if I ever want to leave. Talk about a friendly city, a live music capital, a nature enthusiast's dream, we've got great restaurants, stunning scenery, wonderful nightlife, and just an all-around fantastic vibe. Austin, TX - 100% awesome.

San Francisco is the best city I have visited. There are a few that I haven't visited that I think I might like better but don't know yet - like Paris, Bangkok, New York, Hong Kong and Rome - though I get the feeling these would be great to visit but not necessarily live in. If I had a job in the outdoors I think I'd like to live in Singapore if only it were a more liberal place.

Sydney would be the best city I have ever been to. Austin would be better if it was on the Gulf of Mexico. And Cannes/Nice were relaxing, but the language would take about 5 years to get used to.

Of the cities I haven't been to, I think Portland, Key West, Ibiza, Gold Coast (Australia) and the Bahamas would all be fun places to live.
