It is believed that Stonehenge was built over the course of several different construction periods beginning in 3100 BC and stretching over a thousand years.
The most popular theory is that it's a calendar. But it's not as if the ancient builders left a sign saying so. And because it's design evolved over a millennia, I would certainly think that it's purpose did also.
I like the idea that at one time it may have been a complement to the Rude Man of Cerne.
