these extreme ad campaigns are consummate fodder for all the non- & ex-smokers to throw into the still smoking peoples' faces.

but it won't make anyone quit.
this addiction is that powerfully strong.

often the more you nag at a person to change, the more resistance you'll encounter.

possibly... this assault packaging may deter some new smokers from developing a difficult-to-impossible habit to kick.
possibly.

Oh, oh, and just HOW effective have scare tactics been shown to be?
Very effective to non-smokers, and not very effective to current smokers. That's the point of these scare tactics: If you don't already smoke, you're definitely not going to start smoking now.

I was making a point more with drugs in general and media anti-drug scare tactics being ineffective.

I would like to see data backing up your claim though.

omg so funny

i smoke though. i LIKE smoking. i know how bad it is for me, but right now, i honestly don't care. if i ever date someone who wnats me to quit or get pregnant, i'll quit for good. but not having any desire to quit makes it pretty damned hard when there's noone who cares whether you do or don't

They have these up here in Canada...

I know a few smokers that like to collect them and specifically ask for special packages when buying the cigs....

As for me, like Tirian, I was exposed to a scary slideshow at a young age too, so I've never smoked in my life.

This theory stems from the "minimal effects" model (you can look up the term yourself), meaning that the media are able to reinforce but not change whatever decision you've already made. So these scare tactics is a method to enhance our already existing point of views against smoking, hence, preaching to the converted. It doesn't do much for those who already do smoke, but it effectively reinforces the stance of a non-smoker.

When I was in high school, one of my teachers passed around an actual sample of a cancerous black lung. Had no effect on me whatsoever, I continued to smoke.

This stuff is ineffectual.
